Private ResidenceKeeping Room Addition

The Owners had a west facing porch that they never used due to the glare and heat from the sun. The space is adjacent to the kitch-en, and they wanted to turn the porch into a keeping room. The primary goal was to make the space feel as if it had always been there and was an integral part of the kitchen. This was achieved by removing the majority of the wall that separated the kitchen from the porch. In order to reduce the heat and glare from the sun, the glazing on the western wall was greatly reduced while keeping the northern and southern walls open to keep the room feeling light. The house is very traditional and based on symme-try. I maintained the main axis of the house by changing the patio doors into an archway and recentering the opening on the front door. Aiding in the transition between spaces, I designed cabinetry that appeared to be a part of the existing kitchen cabinetry from the kitchen side and to be furniture from the keeping room side.
