association which can and will speak for the

profession as a whole” (Shaffer)

Goals & Objectives

PPM• To unite all persons engaged in library work or

interested in libraries in Malaysia

• To promote a better administration of libraries

• To encourage professional education and training for librarianship

• To undertake, promote and encourage activities such as conferences, seminar, workshops, meetings, forum, etc. for the advancement of libraries and library profession

Objectives (Present)

To provide independent professional views and advice on all mattersrelated to development of libraries, information centers and theprofession.

To unite all persons engaged in libraries and information work and/orstudies.

To develop and promote standards in all aspects of the library andinformation profession and services.

To provide and support education and training to enhance theknowledge, qualifications and status of members of the profession.

To promote and monitor the legislation affecting the profession andprovision of libraries and information services.

To formulate legislation and work towards its adoption in thedevelopment of the library and information profession and services.

To conduct, support and encourage research for the advancement oflibrary and information profession and services.

To ensure the effective dissemination of relevant informationthrough publications in various media.

Objectives (Present)

To forge strategic alliances with national, regional and international organizations leading towards globalization of library and information profession and services

To foster cooperation and establish close liaison with government authorities, members of the public and other professions.

To strive towards regulating the practice of librarianship by effecting a Code of Ethics and the registration of members

To undertake fund-raising activities, including soliciting donations incash and kind, to finance activities consistent with the objectives ofthe PPM.

To purchase, acquire and own property for the benefit of PPM withthe proviso that the Association shall not develop or turn to accountany interest in such property for commercial purposes.

To invest, operate bank accounts and negotiate loans from banks andother financial institutions, appoint trustees, and undertake any otheractivities related to fund-raising and ownership of property.

To promote and support educational, cultural and social activities forthe benefit of society.
