Benefits to the Health of AustraliansContribution to medical knowledge about prevention
Increasing capacity to attract similar clinical trials
Training new clinical and public health researchers
Adding value to biomedical research (Biobank)
Improved understanding of health and ageing
Bringing clinical research to regional centres
ASPREE
ASPREE (ASPirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly) will determine if daily low-dose aspirin can delay or prevent a heart attack or stroke, the onset of dementia and certain cancers, such as bowel cancer. It will, for the first time, analyse the risks and benefits of aspirin therapy in healthy older people.
The Trial Double blind randomised
19,000 participants, 12,500 in Australia 6,500 in the USA
 Aged 70 plus, healthy
 Five years follow up
 Half receive aspirin, half placebo
 Collaboration with Australian general practitioners
ASPREE is the largest primary prevention trial ever undertaken in Australia
Collaborators Monash University (Australian lead)
 Berman Center, Minnesota (USA lead)
 CSIRO
 University of Melbourne
 University of Tasmania
 Australian National University
Add-on StudiesASPREE Biobank: blood samples on commencement
Purpose: better prediction, earlier treatment of serious disease
ASPREE-ALSOP: questionnaires completed during study
Purpose: improved understanding of the problems of ageing including: mobility, hearing, eyesight, dental care, diet, exercise
