a purpose greaterthan ourselves
by Sheri Sachs, Temple Solel President
In an era that has seen the loss of community,at a moment when our economic insecurity
forces us to give greater attention to the demands of home andworkplace, at such a time, we need a third place, a center ofcommunity. I am honored that Temple Solel is this third place, providing a sense of purpose greater than ourselves, but mostimportantly, providing a community for our family and friends.Temple Solel is a place that embraces all who enter its gates; aplace where, when you are not there, someone misses you, andwhere no member suffers alone, grieves alone or sits home aloneon a Jewish holiday. Our synagogue is a place where you stopbeing another face in a crowd of strangers; where someone tapsyou on the shoulder, recognizes you, calls you by name andaffirms that you are unique and irreplaceable in the eyes of God.Temple Solel is a place about which a Jew can say withconfidence: “I belong here.”
There is nothing easy about maintaining the sense ofcommunity our synagogue provides. As members of TempleSolel, the hand of Jewish history rests heavily on each and everyone of our shoulders. A wise person once remarked, “There aremany great Jewish organizations that raise awareness, but onlysynagogues raise Jews.” As we approach our 30th anniversary as acongregation, we reflect on the thousands of Jews Temple Solelhas raised. Indeed, we have a proud history. But to maintain ourposition as one of the leading Jewish institutions in SouthernCalifornia, we need the commitment and collective strength ofour current membership.
Temple Solel provides a rich variety of social, religious, educational, Israel, and social justice opportunities designed toharness the heritage and impulse we all have as Jews for repairing

the world. I would like to encourage your support inbuilding our sacred community by considering yourconnection to Temple Solel. I have outlined some “todo” possibilities, and invite you to think about yourinvolvement in the future of American Jewry throughTemple Solel.
“To Do Possibilities” at Temple Solel:
Contact Dawn Grossman, our Director of VolunteerEngagement, or any Chair of a specific committee (seepage 21 for committees and chairs), and ask how youcan support committee efforts or volunteeropportunities at Temple Solel.
Contact Judy Bricker, Director of Adult Programming, andask how you enroll in a Jewish Adult Educationprogram, or perhaps join a Havurah.
Contact Cantor Robbins, and ask how you can participate inour services by chanting Torah and/or prayers, orprovide a D’var Torah.
Together, we must address the boredom, theemptiness and the lack of passion that pervades manysectors of modern life. Through our involvement,Temple Solel can be a place that nurtures values andcommitment in our youth, uplifts and informs thespirit of our members, and gives us all a way to bepartners with God in touching hearts, challengingminds, and extending our hands with loving kindnessto those in need within our community and beyond.

A DoubleMitzvah
Everybody knows it is a good idea to recycle, but I figuredout how to make recycling adouble mitzvah.
My name is Hannah Yellen.I am seven years old and in
second grade. I’ve always thought recycling
is important because it helps keep our earth clean. A while ago,my mom explained to me that Icould earn money for the bottlesand cans that we usually put atthe curb.
We started taking our bottlesto the local rePLANET center. I was surprised how much moneyI could earn this way. It is great tohave some money to spend, but Idecided to donate half of myrecycling money to tzedakah.
After saving up a few weeks, I brought $12.69 to Temple. Nowmy recycling money is going tohelp build safer schools for thechildren in Sha’ar Ha’negev, ourTemple’s sister city. By recycling, I am helping the earth and ourJewish family in Israel at the sametime. It’s a double mitzvah!
If you are putting your bottlesand cans at the curb, think aboutturning them into tzedakahmoney. To find the rePLANETcenter nearest you, visit,www.replanetusa.com.
Everyday bottles can be turned into everydaymitzvahs!

Temple Solel’s Hineynu Community
“We Are Here”
The Hineynu Community is a network of Temple Solelmembers designed for “inreach” to families in need. Hineynuencourages participation of all Temple Solel members infulfilling the mitzvah of Gemilut Chasidim — acts of loving-kindness, visiting the sick, consoling the bereaved, andwelcoming the stranger. The Hineynu Community respondsto the emotional/special needs of our congregational family, especially in relation to illness, bereavement, and major lifechanges through supportive services such as hospital andhome visitation, provision of meals, and respite care.
Contrary to 150 years ago, in today’s world, one does nottend to live out their lives in the same village in which theywere born. We move for many reasons such as jobs or a betterlifestyle. With this mobility, a loss of long standingrelationships ensues and a new support group takes time todevelop. Close family may be distant. Neighbors come and go.But Temple Solel is here for you and can fill the breach withour excellent clergy, staff and services and in times of need, the Hineynu Caring Community.
Temple Solel has, as one of its’ basic tenets, the concept that we are all one community. We are family. We are all here for one another.Hineynu was started with the goal to facilitate the help of members in time of need.
One of the greatest times of need is when a loved onepasses away. Hineynu helps our congregants through thisbereavement process. You may have all seen of late an e-mailinstituted by the Hineynu caring community. It is entitled“Our Heartfelt Condolences.” When one of our own (or afirst degree relative) passes away, we want the entirecongregation to be aware of this significant event and helpthose who are mourning the loss of their loved one. Pleasemake sure you have provided the Temple with your mostcorrect e-mail address so you can be informed.
With relation to a death, the Hineynu steering committeehas written and provided to all congregants the inspirationaland educational Bereavement Guide. We also make calls, send cards, plant a tree in Israel in memory of the departed, provide meals and support as needed, as well as ChavurahChesed (the meal after the funeral arranged by Ellen Fox andRobin Rubin).
If there is ever a time when you, or one of your lovedones, is in need, please do not hesitate to contact the Temple

In September of 2004, the Dovesoap company tried a radicalexperiment. It ran an ad campaign thatfeatured women who did not fit thetypical “tall and thin” model that we areused to seeing in the media today. Italso encouraged readers to share theirideas about the campaign on theirwebsite, hoping to create a discussionabout our modern perception of beauty.
“Low self-esteem among girls andyoung women has reached a crisis level,”said Dr. Ann Kearney-Cooke, Ph.D., apsychologist who collaborated on Dove’sReal Girls, Real Pressure national reporton the state of self-esteem. The reportrevealed that seven in ten girls feelinadequate about their looks, performance in school, and/orrelationships. Most disturbing, girls with low self-esteem are engaging inharmful and destructive behaviors thatcan leave a lasting imprint on their lives.(“Girl Power?” by Judy Gruen atwww.aish.com)
Such is the reality for many of theteenage girls at Temple Solel, and suchis the reason that three of thePreConfirmation (8/9th grade) classesthey attended in February and Marchwere based on the “Strong Girls”curriculum, written for the organizationJewish Women International. They weretaught by Jan Rakoff, who has been apsychotherapist in the Del Mar area forover thirty years, and a longtime TempleSolel member. (The teenage guys in theclass attended three classes entitled“Good Guys,” taught by Craig Parks!)
The intention of the Strong Girlscurriculum is to help ensure that our
teenage girls are equipped with the self-confidence and self-knowledge to makehealthy choices and surround themselveswith strong support systems that willhelp them achieve their goals. It is easyto shy away from implementingcurriculum that deals with dating, friendship and self-esteem in a Jewishschool. But, as a Jewish institution, thestaff and teachers at the Temple SolelSchool are committed to providing theyoung women in our school theopportunity to talk about these issuesand to learn about what Judaism saysabout the issues.
Some of the key points that JanRakoff discussed with the Solel teens inclass were:• The way we feel about ourselves
impacts how we interact inrelationships.
• Esteem is someone else’s perceptionof our worth or value as a person.Self-esteem is our own perceptionof our worth or value as a person.
• Being confident in ourselves andknowing what makes us happy is so
important to making healthyrelationship choices because we canmake choices that reflect our ownvalues and complement who we are.
• Surrounding ourselves withsupportive friends also helps guideus in making healthy relationshipchoices. Some of the comments written by
the girls on the evaluations included:• “I learned the importance of
listening to my inner voice whenmaking my relationship choices.”
• “I am going to try harder not to givein to peer pressure.”
• “I will make sure I know guys beforeI go out with them.”
• “I will talk to a close friend aboutthe choices I make if I feel that Ineed some help.”Having a safe place for young
women to talk about their feelings is soimportant. Jan Rakoff provided a lovingand open atmosphere so that the teensfelt comfortable to discuss thechallenges they face as girls growing upin today’s world. For young Jewishwomen, the messages aroundrelationships are complex and oftenunclear. The “Strong Girls” classes gavethe girls an opportunity to talk openlyand ask questions about the messagesthey receive, and to discuss theirreactions to these messages. Althoughthe girls did not walk away with all ofthe answers to their questions, theyparticipated in the conversations, learned what Judaism had to say abouttheir questions, and were “listened to”by a caring Jewish teacher.
office to let them know. This begins the process of caring and fulfilling themitzvah of Gemilut Chasidim as carriedout by our clergy, staff and through ourHineynu caring community.
One Single act of kindness may bethe greatest gift you can give.
We are always in need of volunteersto help out with meals, calls, transportation, writing cards, etc. For
more information on volunteering andbecoming a vital part of the Hineynucaring community, please call or e-mailKarin Bensusen.Kbensusen@aol.com or (760) 436-7890.

P R E S C H O O L H A P P E N I N G S
by Cathy Goldberg, ECC Director
At Temple Solel Early ChildhoodCenter, we begin with a vision of whatwe hope the children will learn aboutJewish traditions and holidaycelebrations during the school year. ThisPassover in our ECC, the childrenlistened to stories about Pesach, sangsongs, and had hands-on experiencemaking matzah. They were given flourand water — the ingredients used in theprocess of matzah making. They felt thesquishy dough between their softfingers; squeezing, rolling, making smallholes in it, and eventually placing it on acookie sheet ready to go into the oven. What a wonderful hands-on approachto learning. The children had anawesome opportunity to use all theirsenses in the process. Our teacherscontinually amaze me with creativelearning experiences geared for thedevelopmental levels of their students.
Each and every day there issomething “Jewish” happening withinthe classroom. Teachers utilize Hebrewvocabulary, words are placed in bothHebrew and English in different areasof the classroom, there is a lot ofholiday baking, the sh’ma buzzesthrough the classrooms, havdallah isenthusiastically presented at thebeginning of each week, we end theweek with a Shabbat experience everyFriday with singing and dancing. Howimportant is this for a child attending aJewish center? VERY! There isnowhere else that a child can be exposedto and infused with the beauty of
Judaism in such precious and safesurroundings as in our ECC.
So, what does this say about JewishEarly Childhood Education? This fieldis mandatory if we are to keep ourculture and identity strong. Our staffneeds to be educated both in the bestpractices for secular education as well asfor Jewish study. This is accomplishedby having them attend wonderfulconferences which will help fuel them tospark interests in their classrooms. Inaddition to being well grounded in theworld of best practices, the child’s social, emotional and cognitive growthcontinues even in the realm of Judaism.Judaism is introduced to the child’sworld the same way as any othercomponent of curriculum. It is weavedthrough their daily schedules. Judaism is alive and well, and is thrivingthroughout our center.
We are fortunate to be able totransmit the love of Jewish learning inour classrooms. This is done through aloving and nurturing environment thatengages the children so they can learnwhat our Jewish heritage andcommunity is about. Tikkun olam, tzedakah, respect for our fellow friendsand teachers, kindness to others, andstrong Jewish values are all keycomponents in our environment. In theJewish early childhood classroom, it isimportant for children to learn thatbeing nice, and kind, to other people isnot a good thing to do, it is a Jewish
thing to do. Children can learn that it isthe Jewish way to help each otherwillingly and with care. Children willrise to opportunities to act as God’spartner and take care of their world, ifthey are given the vocabulary of theJewish values and mitzvot to go alongwith their actions.
As a strong advocate of Jewish EarlyChildhood Education, it is mydedicated belief and desire to keepenriching the classrooms with anourishing curriculum that builds strongand healthy minds by utilizing music, dance, creativity and stories, in additionto encouraging children to share, carefor fellow classmates, show compassionand teach prayer. We must understandthat anything secular can be turnedJewish.
Teachers are a critical component toany Jewish Early Childhood Program, asthey infuse a great wealth of knowledge, expertise, love and dedication in all thatthey do. They need to be valued andappreciated for all their hard work andcommitment in making their classroom aJewish environment. It is theirresponsibility to enrich the children’scurriculum—both in a Judaic and secularway for all students. The parents, children, educators and administration need tostand together if a cohesive community isto blossom out of our centers. Together, asa team, we are building the foundations forgenerations to come…the foundations of asolid Jewish identity amongst ourpreschoolers and their families.
Are you willing to cook extra portions of the main dish, salad or dessert that you are making for your family so that youcan provide food for the women and children at the EncinitasCommunity Center Abused Women’s Shelter? If so, thismitzvah is for you!
Three times during the year, you will make either a maindish, salad or dessert and deliver it to the Abused Women’s
Shelter in Encinitas. A wonderful group of Temple Solelmembers have been doing this for many years. The women andchildren at the Abused Women’s Shelter very much appreciatethis kind act that our Solel members perform. If you areinterested, please contact Ellen Fox at efox@templesolel.net.

PA S S OV E R I N T H E D E S E RT
Thanks to all the participants in the second annual Passover in the Desert. If I may speak for everyone, we all hada great time!
You may be wondering why all those people drive out tothe Anza Borrego Desert to sleep in tents for two nightsleaving themselves open to the whims of nature. Will it be hot, windy, rainy, and uncomfortable? Will there be critters tocontend with?
Well, we had some wind, but we put up a wind break. Itwasn’t too hot, but we carried a lot of sunscreen just the same.It did rain a little bit on Friday night but one tent had to put
on their rain fly at 3:00 a.m. because I told them it doesn’t rainin the desert. And we did hear coyotes, but they were far awayand calling to the moon.
Through the experience, the inconveniences, and the coldwalks to a bathroom at night, we go for Passover in the Desertbecause of the amazing camaraderie that occurs. Where else donew members get to know their neighbors by hiking togetherto a desert oasis? Where else do new and long time membersjoin together to help each other with setting up tents, ourtemporary homes? Where else do you have time to standtogether to make meals that test your creativity working withlimited resources and space? And think about the need to lighta lantern for Shabbat because the wind would blow outcandles. And the laughter that is shared during an eveningspent at a campfire telling jokes and singing. Where else doteens get to use the Bricker’s RV for their evening get togetherbut help out with the younger kids during the day withoutbeing asked? Where else do campers pull together to turn outtruly delicious meals like cedar planked salmon and stir friedtofu? Where else do you get to share a daytime sky of the mostradiant blue against rocky crags and a night sky filled with starsfollowed by the rising of a full moon? Summing it up, Passoverin the Desert feels like a combination of Kibbutz life mixedwith Jewish camp and gives just a hint of what it was like forour ancestors.
As we said upon parting — next year in Borrego! Thankyou campers for making the experience so great!
