Educator’s Angle One of my Talmidim is a chronic doodler; the margins of his papers are filled with imaginative scrawls. He claims that doodling aids his concentration on the Shiur. Should I allow him to use the Gemara period as creative art class?
Although logic would dictate that the mind can not actively focus on two simultaneous tasks, the following study might indicate otherwise. In 2009 psychologist Jackie Andrade of the University of Plymouth in England ran a study, published in Applied Cognitive Psychology, to see how doodling affected concentration. She asked 40 adult volunteers to listen to a monotonous mock telephone message about a party. Half the participants were told to doodle (filling in some random printed shapes) while listening to the message and to write down the mentioned partygoers' names. The other half of the research participants were not instructed to doodle as they completed the same task. Later all 40 listeners were asked to recall information from the message on a surprise test. The results were startling: the doodlers actually had better recall and on average retained 29% more of the information than the non-doodling study participants. Many presidents and world leaders including Winston Churchill, JFK and Ronald Reagan were well known for their doodles. Bill Gates has been known to leave pages of doodles on the table after international economic summits. If not captivated by the subject matter in a presentation one may “space out” or daydream and lose focus on the lesson. Daydreaming utilizes a significant part of the subconscious mind to create
fantasies. While engrossed in daytime musings, participation in the classroom give and take is severely limited. In contrast, doodling ties up the subconscious (to a lesser degree) and does not leave enough resources to wander off in daydreams. Doodling leaves the conscious part of the brain active and attentive. Of course, this is all in regards to an effortless doodle. The creation of an artistic magnum opus or a sophisticated sketch
requires more intense concentration leaving limited ability to focus on the lesson. Doodling has been shown to increase learning performance particularly when it is difficult to concentrate intently on the lesson. By limiting the capacity to daydream maximum learning potential and success can be achieved. Questions can be sent to: Rabbi Meir Levenson

Dear Neighbor,
As in previous years, the Carriage Walk Homeowners’ Association reminds all non‐members who wish to use our parks that there is a $30 annual fee. This fee helps us cover the costs of insurance, landscaping, and maintenance.
The parks included are only the ones adjacent to 1 North Crest and 55 North Crest. They are owned by the 72 houses which are paying members of the association. The cost of upkeep in the parks for the association is a few thousand dollars per year, and the members of the association grant non‐members access to the parks only if they pay their fair share in the financial burden.
If you are unsure whether you are required to pay the fee for this year or a previous year, please call M. Fund at 732‐942‐6581. Please note that only the following units are members of the association: 2 Hillside‐26 Hillside, even #’s; 6 N. Crest‐88 N. Crest, even #’s; & Kletsk, all #’s.
The money may be given or mailed to Moshe Fund, 35 Maplewood, Yosef Fund, 33 Kletsk, or Mordy Zelmanovich, 68 N. Crest. Thank you.
