he intensity of typhoons that bring rains,

be getting erce with the offensive climate
change that has become a by-word in todays life.
The Mindanao area which used to be typhoon-free
or seldom visited by typhoons has now become afavorite destination of storms that unleash their fe-
rocity and leave the place with destruction and loss
of lives. The lessons left by these unbridled natu-
ral elements have somehow lessened loss of lives.
It is a good thing that the national government has
preemptive Pablos occurrence and directed antici-
patory moves like evacuation and disaster prepar-
edness.
The country does not have the threat that Israel
has but all disaster prone places can learn some ba-
sic lessons from it. Israel is a small country, not-
withstanding the treatises signed; it is practically
surrounded by enemy lines. Due to security prob-
lems, it has imposed all homes to have a rein-
forced security room impermeable to chemical
and biological substances.
The country has no such security threats
but it has to address massively the threats im-
posed by nature such as ashoods, typhoonsand other natural calamities. At the present,
whenever calamities strike, people are evacu-
ated to basketball courts, schools, churches
and other structures which are far from safe.
Mitigation of disaster must be given more pri-
ority and focus by the government by the sheer
political will of preventing residences from ca-
lamity-prone areas; building of evacuation ar-
eas that are equipped with the necessary sup-
plies and equipment for emergencies.

We mark today a solemnity inthe Catholic Church, the rst joy-ul mystery that is the annuncia-tion by the angel Gabriel to Maryabout her conception o the saviorwho she shall name Jesus. Tatevent which is narrated today inthe gospel o Saint Luke was trulya joyul encounter as it broughtabout the salvation o mankind.Mary was awestruck by the angelicannouncement but was too hum-ble and obedient to say yes to thewill o God without any question, hesitation or reservation. She hadthe ree will to choose and was im-bued with that reedom o choicewhere she could have opted toreject conceiving a child, but she

Saturday of the 1st Week of AdventSolemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin MaryGn 3:9-15, 20; Ps 98; Eph 1:3-6, 11-12; Lk 1:26-38
ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE BIRTH OF JESUS
The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee calledNazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house ofDavid, and the virgins name was Mary. And coming to her, he said,Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you. But she was greatly troubledat what was said and pondered at what sort of greeting this might be.
Then the angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have foundfavor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear ason, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be calledSon of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne ofDavid his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, andof his kingdom there will be no end. But Mary said to the angel, Howcan this be, since I have no relations with a man? and the angel said toher in reply, The Holy spirit will come upon you, and the power of theMost High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will becalled holy, the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, hasalso conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for herwho was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God. Marysaid, Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to meaccording to your word. Then the angel departed from her.
FULL OF GRACE
Mary was full of grace and she was highly favored by God becauseshe had no sin. She was the glory of her people. She is our taintednatures solitary boast. We sinners are proud of her as the only one
among the children of Adam and Eve without sin. Sin is degrading toman. It has affected all of us. We have been disgraced by this dealingwith the devil. We are ashamed of our disloyalty to God and of theway we have been untrustworthy of his grace. We rejoice that God hasfound Mary full of grace. We cannot equal Marys fullness but we can
be in the state of grace. Do I use the Sacrament of Confession as a helpgiven to me so that I may be united with God? Do I hate sin and loveGod as Mary did? (Daily Gospel Now, R. are many property
losses aside from

the sound of si-

small children at

there is a possible
airstrike, to which
they know what to
do and where to go.
This is how effective
their early warning
system is. It is un-
derstood by all citi-

trained how to re-

They grow up to
be responsible and
knowledgeable. In
the country, when-
ever a typhoon sig-
nal is up and rivers
get ooded, chil-dren are seen swim-
ming as if nothing is
happening. In the
recent Pablo visit,
men were seen re-
trieving logs carried
away by the rushing
water current from
upstream. These
people could have
been drowned and
possible subjects of

Fishermen still go

fruit of the forbidden
tree. Marys purity put
her above all the rest of
her kind in the whole
world. Indeed, as the
prayer goes, Blessed
is she among women.
Coupled by her As-
sumption into Heaven
body and soul accord-
ing to church dogma,
Mary has become one
among the divine be-
ings next to Jesus, who
are believed to be very
powerful intercessors.
The doctrine reads,
The blessed Virgin
Mary to have been,
from the rst instant
of her conception, by a
singular grace and priv-ilege of Almighty God,
in view of the merits of
Christ Jesus the Savior
of Mankind, preserved
free from all stain of
original sin.
On this very day, the
Feast of the Immacu-
late Conception of the
Blessed Virgin Mary
is celebrated in the Ro-
man Catholic Church
across the globe. Be-sides the Holy Mass
especially said for this
solemnity, faith com-
munities stage devo-
tional activities, such
as festive celebrations
and processions. Here
is a consecration prayer
to the Immaculata com-
posed by Saint Maxi-
milian Maria Kolbe,
the Apostle of Conse-
cration to Mary.
O Immaculata,
Queen of Heaven and
earth, refuge of sinners
and our most loving
Mother, God has willed
to entrust the entire or-
der of mercy to you. I,
(name), a repentant sin-
ner, cast myself at yourfeet, humbly imploring
you to take me with
all that I am and have,
wholly to yourself as
your possession and
property. Please make
of me, of all my pow-
ers of soul and body,
of my whole life, death
and eternity, whatever
most pleases you. If it
pleases you, use all that
I am and have with-out reserve, wholly to
accomplish what was
said of you: She will
crush your head, and
You alone have de-
stroyed all heresies in
the whole world.
Let me be a t in-
strument in your im-
maculate and merciful
hands for introducing
and increasing your
glory to the maximumin all the many strayed
and indifferent souls, and
thus help extend as far
as possible the blessed
kingdom of the most Sa-
cred Heart of Jesus. For
wherever you enter you
obtain the grace of con-
version and growth in ho-
liness, since it is through
your hands that all graces
come to us from the most
Sacred Heart of Jesus.
(V.) Allow me to praiseyou, O Sacred Virgin
(R.) Give me strength
against your enemies.
Amen
The pureness of Mary
is one attribute of woman
that deserves the peo-
ples emulation. She is
the Mother of Perpetual
Help, a Mediatrix, the
succor of all humans, and
one whom all Catholic
faithful could call Our
Dear Mother. She is our
guide and protector. Our
prayer: Immaculate
Conception, pray for us.
