A SPECIAL SHABBAT SHUVA
Dear Friends - Everyone has a "bucket list" - a list of things they hope to accomplish in their lifetime. One of the things I had hoped to do is to read from the Torah. So when a program to learn how to read Torah was offered at the JCC this summer, I joined the class. We were seven committed students, under the enthusiastic tutelage of our teacher, Howard Hait. He began by showing us that the well-known tune of the "V'ahafta" is that of the Torah trope (tune). Meeting each Friday morning for 6 weeks, teacher and students began to bond together and it was decided that on Shabbat Shuva we would all read from the Torah. Howard recorded each of our portions and we began to prepare our

parts. I can read Hebrew (sort of) and certainly can sing most of the prayers, but I was not prepared for how difficult it would be to read from the Torah without vowels and punctuation. After a dress rehearsal a few weeks prior to Shabbat Shuva, we all realized that there was much work to do to be ready for our Torah reading debuts. I myself spend countless hours studying, singing, and restudying my 9 lines for the first Aliyah. That Saturday morning I got dressed in one of my favorite dresses, put on my mother's earrings and the chai my dad brought back from Israel for my bat mitzvah over 60 years ago. I found my son Joe's tallit and took it to services with me. I guess I was preparing for my bat mitzvah - maybe one even more meaningful than when I was 13. There definitely was a lot of excitement when I arrived at the JCC that morning. We were nervous and, as the sanctuary filled up with family, friends and congregation members, we knew the time had come for us to finally "lein" from the Torah. Show time!!! When I stepped off the bimah after my aliyah, there were so many friends there to wish me a mazel tov and as each of us went up to the Torah, the sense of accomplishment grew. At one time, a few of the readers did a little hora. Once everyone was done and our teacher did the Haftorah, everyone felt a sense of pride... and relief. So many of us have sadness in our lives. It is wonderful to celebrate a good thing!!! So MAZEL TOV TO MY FELLOW CLASSMATES. WE DID IT!!!

SUKKOT
This Rosh Hashana saw the largest gathering of worshippers in the history of the congregation, with over 400 attending services on the first day of the holiday. Led by Rabbi Michael Jay and Cantor Avi Green, the congregation was inspired by both words and music in the beautiful setting of our synagogue. Yasher Koach to Carole Nunberg, who does such a fabulous job with the High Holiday tickets and seating, our Gabbaim Tiger Wolpert and Harold Farin and all those who had aliyahs and honors. Many thanks to Sue Rubinfeld for providing the beautiful flowers for the bimah. According to President, Don Pripstein, " The JCC was hopping on Labor Day Monday, Sept. 1st as seventeen volunteers (5 women and 12 men) spent most of the morning at the JCC preparing it for the Holidays. This included polishing Torah silver, setting up 300 chairs in Social Hall, 400 prayerbooks and white yarmulkes and head coverings in the entranceway, and changing Lecturn covers, etc. A big thanks to: Judy Abend, Jackie Avondoglio, Lynn Berman, Vivian Fitz, Lori Sherry, Paul Avondoglio, Stan Berman, Cliff Farin, Howie Fruchterman, Alan Gordon, Ron Marr and friend from college John Stacy, Richard Morgan, Mickey Sherry, Seth Sherry, and Joel Tabnick."

Dear JCC Members:
As the President of the Jewish Cultural Group in Four Seasons @ Mirage, I would like to take this opportunity to cordially invite you to our Annual Deli Night, which will take place on Thursday, October 10th in our beautiful clubhouse ballroom. This year, we are combining this evening with a "Tribute to Classic TV Game Shows", including the "Not-so-Newlywed Game", and "Family Food". We will, of course, be serving NY style deli sandwiches, with all the accompaniments. There will also be great prizes offered to our game winners. If you like good food and fun, this evening should be just what the doctor ordered! Please let me know (Claire Edelstein, wheel459@aol.com), or 609-549-5243 if you would like to attend.
