June 2010 Long Beach Branch, Vol. 39 Issue 10 By: Darlene Daclan Saturday, June 5, 2010 INSTALLATION of OFFICERS LUNCHEON Join us on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at the Old Ranch Country Club, for our final meeting of the 2009-2010 year. As is our tradition at the June meeting, we will be installing our officers for next year and presenting the Connie Inskeep Leadership Award honoree. Additionally, we use this meeting to decide the distribution of interest earned from the Ethel P. Black and Irene Holmes Fund. After our business meeting, we will be presented with the musical stylings of one of our local Long Beach City College students, Melanie Harvey. Melanie is a Vocal major at LBCC but also serves as the Assistant Director of Choral Studies, Voice for the College. Melanie’s talents cover various vocal genres that include classical, opera, and musical theater. Her talents not only lie in voice but in musical instruments – piano, guitar, and bass – she also is a member of LBCC’s Band. While Melanie would like to direct choirs, she loves teaching and currently teaches private voice and piano lessons to 15 students. Melanie recently received a music scholarship to Cal State Fullerton, where she expects to major in Music Education and pursue her goal of teaching music to middle school and high school students. ************************************************************************************************************ AAUW-Long Beach VANTAGE

The National Committee on Pay Equity, in conjunction with AAUW and our coalition partners, announced
this week that the next Equal Pay Day will be April 12, 2011. The date symbolizes how far into 2011 women
must work to earn what men earned in 2010. As always, it falls on a Tuesday, which represents how far into
the work week women must work to earn what men earned the previous week. You can also visit AAUW's
Pay Equity webpage and download the Pay Equity Resource Kit and Equal Pay Day Program in a Box for
ideas, tips, and resources to use in your community throughout the year.
