*King Louis XVI and Marie

Antoinette*The monarchy that was in power during the time of the French Revolution. During the revolution they were both executed.

*National Assembly

*the body constituted by the French Third Estate in June 1789 after the calling of the Estates General. It was dissolved in Sept 1791 to be replaced by the new Legislative Assembly.

*Storming of Bastille*On July 14, 1789, people of the third estate stormed

and destroyed the Bastille. This prison and fortress represented royal authority; the revolutionists hoped to gain weapons and ammunition.

*Napoleon Bonaparte*A French General who became Emperor of

the French.

*Napoleonic Wars*A series of wars from

1803-1815 between Napoleon’s French Empire and Great Britain. The French gained power as Napoleon conquered much of Europe; but collapsed after they invaded Russia and were defeated.

*Battle of Waterloo

*the battle on 18 June 1815 in which Napoleon met his final defeat by Prussian and British forces.

*Klemens Wenzel Von Metternich

*An Austrian politician who helped form the alliance that defeated Napoleon.

*Congress of Vienna*An international conference

held at Vienna after Napoleon’s banishment to Elba (an island). Metternich was chairman at this conference; the goal was to restore power and land to the crown heads of Europe.
