MESSAGE FROM THE VICE GHANGELLOR, U|TM
It is only fitting that heartiest congratulatory notes are expressed here to the organisers ofthis debut
conference for their collaborative initiative in bringing together experts and stakeholders from across
continents to share knowledge on the latest advances, explore new horizons and broaden access to
areas closely linked to pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and cosmeceutical technology.
Hence, I would like to commend the Non-Destructive Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Research
Centre, as well as the Particle Design Research Group - both from the Faculty of Pharmacy, UiTM, the
Academy of Sciences Malaysia, and their Europe-based partners BioPharmaNet and Tefarco Innova
Consorzio, for making possible this coming together of prominent figures to our doorstep and onto our
home turf. Words of appreciation are also in order to supporting bodies, various sponsors and media for
making this event worthy of their time and resources and thus translating ideas into reality.
I understand that the conference provides a meeting point for integrating scientific knowledge on
drug, nutraceutical, as well as cosmeceutical delivery from numerous perspectives, namely, dosage form
design, material synthesis, formulation, processing technology, in-vitro arrd in-vivo characterisation.
Thus, this meeting of minds serves to provide an opportunity for foreign and Malaysian participants alike
to share research findings, establish network, pursue further education, and identifr industry partners for
purposes of commercialisation and business matching.
Through such well thought-out plan of work, I am confident that the objectives of PharmaTech
2010 to attractdelegates from the academia, industries and research institutions across the globe will be
fulfrlled. I am also hopeful that this conference will pave the way towards linking scientists and industrialists,
to subsequently work on creating new projects, providing new insights and information, as well as,
exchanging new ideas to overcome the multifaceted challenges faced by both today. Indeed, collaborative
efforts involving scientists and industrialists can greatly help reap rewards for their respective national
economies, insofar as pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and cosmeceutical arenas are concerned.
Therefore, it is with great pleasure that I wdlcome everyone present to our X'irst International
Conference and Exhibition on Pharmaceutical, Nutraceutical and Cosmeceutical Technology
(PharmaTech 2010), in Kuala Lumpur.
To all our foreign guests - presenters and participants - I wish you a pleasant stay in Malaysia and
hope that this will not be the last that we see of you here in our country. To all our home participants, I
hope that these three days of sharing session will lead to further exploration of new ideas, improved
cross-continental joint-venfures, and renewed endeavours to make this world a better place for all mankind.

MESSAGE FROM THE ASSISTANT VICE CHANCELLOR, UITM
I bid a warm welcome to distinguished speakers and participants of the International Conference and
Exhibition on Pharmaceutical, Nutraceutical and Cosmeceutical Technology in Kuala Lumpur. This
exhibition is a platform for exhibitors of various technical and commercial backgrounds for all to learn
and network.
It is hoped that pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and cosmeceutical scientists and practitioners of the
world will capture this opportunity to interact and exchange ideas for the better - nurturing the profession
to the vanguard of the disciplines. For one who cannot learn, one cannot change, thus grows one not.
Finally, my heartfelt appreciation to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wong Tin Wui, the Organising Chairman and
his enthusiastic committee from Non-Destructive Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Research Centre and
Particle Design Research Group, Faculty of Pharmacy, for a job well done.
Have a fruitful conference. Congratulations and best wishes.

MESSAGE FROM THE ORGANIZING CHAIRMAN,PHARMATECH 2O1O
Welcome! Thanks for participating in the first International Conference and Exhibition on Pharmaceutical,
Nutraceutical and Cosmeceutical Technology: Formulation and Applications organized by the Non-
Destructive Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Research Centre, together with the Particle Design Research
Group Faculty of Pharmacy UiTM. Starting from the 25ft of May 2010, this event features two plenary
lectures, eight invited lectures, three industry lectures, 39 oral presentations and 1 00 poster presentations.
Ithighlights topics such as drug/nutraceuticaVcosmeceutical formulation, drug discovery physicochemical
andbiological evaluation of dosage form/active, clinicaVconsumer application of active/formulation, material
sciences and processing technology.
The organizing committee has been working hard towards making this event a successful one with
hopes that it can help scaffolding a stimulating academic platform for researchers and industrialists in
presenting and benchmarking their works, exchanging ideas and views, generating new strategies and
development, as well as, transferring knowledge and technolory through intense and thought-provoking
discussion. Here, we wish to record our greatest heart-felt gratitude to the a few supporting bodies and
various sponsors, of which without their support, this event never be well put together. Many thanks to
Tefarco Innova Consorzio (Europe), BioPharmaNet (Europe), Academy of Sciences Malaysia, Research
Management Institute UiTM, sponsors, exhibitors, official media and friends.
The organizing committee hopes that the conference can serve as an academic platform to elevate
the standard of pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and cosmeceutical scipnces. The exhibition, on the other
hand, serves as the first line unit in educating the general public, especially the school students and
university graduates, on information of processing materials, production and analyical technologies, as
well as of end-products related to the development ofphrirmaceuticals, nutraceuticals and cosmeceuticals.
We strongly believe that an early exposure given to our younger generation on processes behind an
effective formulation in manufacturing industr$ and dosage form design research will help foster a
strong sense of interest within them. This, in retirrn, will eventually help them to carve an alternative
exciting career choice.
At last, I hope PharmaTech2Ol0 can achieve all its set objectives. I wish you all a productive yet
academically stimulating experience !

The mixture of betel (Piper betlel) leaf gambier (tlncaria gambi)and slaked lime (calcium hydroxide)has been used as one of the traditional medicines in Indonesia and other countries for a long time, specifically as an anti-microbial agent. Generally, the mixture of extracts is consumed by chewing in itsnatural raw condition along with many other ingredients like areca nut, cardamom and others. Thepresent studyaimedto evaluate antibacterial activityand inhibitionmechanism ofmixture ofbetel, gambierand slaked lime in a ratio of 2:r:7 on staphylococcus epidermidis with measurement on leakage of K*and c* using atomic absorption spectrometry technique, leakage of proteln and nucleic acid using lrvspectrophotometry technique and alteration of bacterial cell wall using scanning electron microscope. The concentrations of mixture used were 0.5,0.25,0.125,0.063, 0.032,0.016, 0.00g and 0.004%(w/v).The minimal inhibition concentration was about o-25%(dv) of mixture. The leakage tests of protein, nucleic acid' K* and ca2* indicated that increasing conpentration of mixture was found to enhance itsantibacterial activity. t
