INDEX
Modernity has limited dance to movement and most
of us today see both as inseparable. I believe that
contemporary thought dares to ask the question,
which liberates dance from movement and goes beyond the
‘bio-mechanics’ of our bodies. It digs deeper in ‘the concept’
and questions the ‘presence’. We are no more stuck in exhibi-
tionism on stage, at least this is our hope, and we are not any
more stuck in nationalism (for sure). We are simply looking for
a cultural and social context to fit in and develop our artistic
visions through.
When Maqamat first decided to organize BIPOD in 2004, the
idea was a far fetched one. However, with the support of The-
atre Monnot, specifically Mr. Paul Matar, Instituto Cervantes and
Yatf, the first platform was organized. It was a big challenge at
the time and it was even bigger to sustain its continuity. In 2005
we had to postpone BIPOD due to the political situation and
‘the change’ that was taking place in the country. In 2006, other
cultural centres in Beirut, especially the French cultural centre
and Goethe institute, played a big role in the development of
the festival up until today. In 2007, and through the establish-
ment of ‘Masahat Dance Network’ the festival took a wider per-
spective in the region and has been ever since, with the support
of today’s cultural partners, a significant event for the establish-
ment and development of a contemporary dance and cultural
scene in Lebanon and the region. It raised international curiosity
about the dance scene in Beirut and The Arab World and has
created a significant presence for dance in Lebanon.

BIPOD as a space for asking questions and provoking discus-
sions. Most of the time we will not find answers, however we
will always appreciate the fact that we dare to ask questions;
what a grace it is to ask such questions, Is it not?

In its 5th anniversary, BIPOD is hosting the first “Arab Dance
Platform’ that we hope together with the collaboration of Sar-
eyyet Ramallah, Ness El Fen, and Leoparts to widen the circle
throughout the Arab World, with other partners, and organize it
biannually in a different Capital each time. The outcome of the
meetings, discussions, and round tables will hopefully estab-
lish a strong basis for creating an association for Arab dancers
and choreographers. We strongly believe in such an associa-
tion for further networking, exchange, collaboration and devel-
opment; one that takes into consideration the importance of
research and documentation, in addition to practice, in order
to anticipate the emergence of contemporary cultural practices
within our Worlds’ social and cultural context.

Maqamat Theatre DanceMaqamat is a Lebanese con-
temporary dance company
that was founded in 2002 in
Beirut. The company has been
able, in a very short period of
time, to emerge as a functional
organization in the creation and development of contemporary
dance in Lebanon and the region. It has presented works that
were favourably received by both critics and public and was
considered by Nazih Khater, the well- known critic from Annahar
Newspaper as:
“…the founder of a Lebanese contemporary dance theatre
scene.” - annahar 12 January 2002
Since 2002 the company has created seven Dance performances
and is currently working on a new creation for 2009; “Beyrouth
Jaune” (2002), “Guerre Au Balcon” (2003, supported by Yatf and
DBM, won the prize of ‘journalists and critics’ and the prize of
“best technique” at “Rencontre Theatrale de Carthage”), “Shut-
ter Speed” (2003, supported by House of World Cultures-Berlin
and Yatf), “Mental Masturbation” (2004), “White Coffee” (2005,

Masahat Dance Festival is held on the occasion of “Jerusalem Cultural Capital 09”
Masahat Dance NetworkMASAHAT (Landscapes) dance network, which was founded in
2006, is mainly concerned with developing stronger relationships
between individual artists, dance associations and companies.
The network focuses on the exchange and development of collab-
orative projects. Such projects would include artists from different
cultural, social and artistic backgrounds. Our objective is to widen
the space for the exchange of ideas and experiences, as well as
developing a new perspective of artistic creation that carries within
it new qualities which are not limited by the borders of a country or
the anthem of a nation.
Our aim is to unite artists in order to celebrate the gathering and
their present human conditions as a diverse group. We do our
best in order to visualize the body through a different gaze and
use it as an expressive and maybe a revolutionary tool. Focusing
on contemporary perception of the body, Masahat, in itself, could
be a new body that aims at building capacities, developing public
awareness, encouraging diversity and promoting social themes
through organizing artistic events. BIPOD - Beirut international
Platform of Dance and RCDF - Ramallah Contemporary Dance
Festival are united again this year with two new partners; DCDP
- Damascus Contemporary Dance Platform and ACDF - Amman
Contemporary Dance Festival in order to make distances closer
and experiences bigger.
“Masahat” was a crazy thought not expected to exist in the shadow
of such tough political circumstances. However, we are determined
to protect our new ‘bridge’ of communication as we have always
believed that old and new walls will only fall through awareness,
culture, and focused artistic practices.

Ramallah Contemporary Dance Festival Palestinian Interconnection … Arab Depth … International Exchange
Last year we promised that Ramallah Contemporary Dance
Festival 2009 would be under the slogan “Al-Quds Capital
of Arab Culture”. Today we meet with you after we have
exerted exceptional efforts to hold the festival not only in Ramallah
and Jerusalem but also in Bethlehem, Nablus, Nazareth and Haifa
and not only in Palestine but also in Lebanon, Syria and Jordan.
This year, Masahat Festivals for Contemporary Dance will be joint-
ly held in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Palestine under the umbrella
of “Al-Quds Capital of Arab Culture 2009”.
Our goal of this year is represented in holding a festival giving a
real value deserved by Jerusalem. Jerusalem is our political capital
… the Capital of the Arab Culture for 2009 and the city that opens
its doors for plurality, dialogue and cultural exchange.
As much as success gives happiness, it also requires more respon-
sibilities. During the last three years, Ramallah Contemporary
Dance Festival achieved great success. It has become an annual
important event on the agenda of the audience and interested
people. The international dance troupes have also become inter-
ested to participate in this event. In 2008, Ramallah Contemporary
Dance Festival won Al-Qattan Award for a Distinguished Cultural
Work. This award with its moral value has been a great challenge
for us; to continue on one hand and to develop and distinguish our
work, on the other.
This year, we will host 17 troupes from Italy, Finland, Netherlands,
Denmark, South Korea, Hungary, the United States, Germany, Alge-
ria, Ireland, Portugal, France, Greece and Palestine. Eight different
dance workshops will be organized in which the local dancers will
exchange their experiences with their guests the foreign dancers.
To develop art critique, a session specialized in criticism will also
be held in addition to other seminars held with the troupes after
their performance. Moreover, the Festival will hold a specialized
training session in dance photography, issue a news bulletin dur-
ing the Festival days and films will be screened about the Dance
Network in the Mediterranean (DBM). 200 Palestinian dancers will
meet in Ramallah to celebrate the International Dance Day, which
has become an annual tradition during the Festival days.
This year, the Festival will be launched from six Palestinian cities.
The participating troupes will traverse the barriers going from Ra-
mallah to Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nablus, Haifa and Nazareth.
This year, the Festival will take on joint production. Sareyyet Ra-
mallah Troupe for Music and Dance and the Italian Troupe Botega
will perform a dance on the opening day, which they will dedicate
to Jerusalem. Thanks go to the artist Samir Jubran for the approval
to use the music of his CD “In the Shadow of Speech”. Another
joint artistic work will bring together Sara Gubran from Denmark,
dancers from First Ramallah Group and the artist Amer Shomali.
This artistic work, which is based on the concept of isolation and
space, will be held in Dheisheh and Jalazon refugee camps.
As regards to our Arab depth, Masahat Contemporary Dance Net-
work will expand to hold contemporary dance festivals in Lebanon,
Ramallah Contemporary Dance Festival Director’s Word
Syria, Jordan and Palestine in partnership with Maqamat Dance
Theater – Lebanon, Tanween Dance Theater – Syria, the National
Center for Culture and Performing Arts – Jordan and First Ramal-
lah Group – Palestine. This year, we will traverse the borders and
restore communication among Al-Sham countries despite the bor-
ders and barriers. The geographical siege, concrete walls, barbed
wires and strangulation will not prevent us from being free. This
year Arab dancers will meet in Lebanon within the Arab Platform
for Contemporary Dance organized by Maqamat Dance Theater
in cooperation with First Ramallah Group and Ness El Fen from
Tunis. During this platform, Arab dancers will perform and meet-
ings, seminars and workshops will be held to promote coopera-
tion among Arab dancers and we will seek to establish an Arab
network for the Arab dancers and dance troupes.
This year we dedicate our Festival to Jerusalem intellectuals and
artists for the sacrifices they offered to conserve Jerusalem iden-
tity. We dedicate the Festival for them as creative people contrib-
uted and are still contributing to disseminate our Palestinian cul-
ture to reach out the world. We thank them all writers, musicians,
artists, painters, filmmakers.
On behalf of the First Ramallah Group we thank our partners in
Masahat Contemporary Dance Network for their tireless efforts to
make this dream a reality. Special thanks go to Omar Rajeh, the
director of Maqamat Dance Theater.
Thanks are due to all those who contributed to the support of this
Festival. We extend our gratitude to the European Commission,
Ramallah Municipality, the Administrative Board of Al-Quds Capi-
tal of Arab Culture 2009, the Swiss Agency for Development and
Cooperation, A.M. Qattan Foundation, UNESCO, French Cultural
Center and Goethe Institute.
We extend our thanks and appreciation to the participating troupes
and their countries, which exerted great efforts to provide the re-
quired support to participate in the Festival. We also thank our
local partners who supported us including Al Kasaba Theater and
Cinematheque, the Palestinian National Theater in Jerusalem, Dar

ABOUT THE PERFORMANCEIconic/Ironic: Nothing stands alone and
everything can be reflected. Iconic/Ironic
is a consistent, abstract choreographic
game that circles around POP ART and
the use of clichés - not less my own ones!
Modern art offen comes to live by promot-
ing the classics - the icons og put them
into new connections - new images of
the world. Iconic/Ironic moves this game
into the world of dance and will be a dis-
torted and humoristic performance. The
piece consists choreographic fragments,
that among its own interaction poses the
performance. Seperate fragments have
references to former productions while
others are new material.
Running Sculpture: The choreographer
Lars Dahl Pedersen remakes the duet
Running Sculpture with the dancers of
Mancopy. The dancers will act pieces in a
puzzle of dancing tableaus among piec-
es of unrestrained dance and sculptural

ABOUT THE COMPANYThe work of Giulia Mureddu, a dance
company based in Amsterdam, is char-
acterized by complex and multilayered
performances in which theatrical, strong
physical and non-conventional dance
intermingle. In her choreographies the
existential fundament of having a body
and the different possibilities of expres-
sion do not shape the image of the body,
but let the human being trapped inside
it communicate. The work has a talking

ABOUT THE PERFORMANCEExtended Teenage Era (E.T.E) examines the demands
made on adulthood, ranging from private desires, fu-
ture concepts and planning to social rights and cat-
egories. If you do not toe the line, you are not respon-
sible and do not behave like the others, you are not
an adult. Perhaps you are a victim of the Peter Pan
syndrome? On a construction site made of plywood,
cardboard boxes and duct tape, the actors in Extend-
ed Teenage Era build their own stage set, arrange the
music (from Schubert to Bob Marley to Justin Timber-
lake) and take charge of the lighting. A television set
intermittently broadcasts an E.T.E. programme.

As a newcomer to Beirut I am looking forward to my first BIPOD.
While the Lebanese dance platform is a new experience for me, the Masahat network is not. As the director of the Goethe Insti-tute in Palestine I had the pleasure to be part of the contempo-rary dance festivals that took place under the auspices of Masa-hat in Ramallah. Enjoying modern dance in times of occupation was not undisputed in Palestine, but many viewers agreed that it was an appropriate feat to defy isolation and cultural depravation. For a cultural institute that promotes internation-al cultural exchange worldwide dance is a very important art form. Many outstanding dance companies call Germany home, albeit they comprise dancers and choreographers from all over the world. Dance also surmounts the language barrier that so often makes works of art inaccessible to foreign audiences. Last year the Goethe Institute in Lebanon presented Henrietta Horn of the prestigious Folkwang Dance Studio with her pro-ductions “Auftaucher” und “Solo”. While the first performance humorously dealt with human be-havior like sexual courting, rivalry, rejections, jealousy, joy and sensuality and easily drew the audience in, “Solo” appealed to the audience’s intellect. This year we will present Samir Akika’s production “Extended Teenage Era” which describes dreams, nightmares and visions of adolescents looking for user manu-als and instructions in order to get a grip on their lives. Born in Algiers in 1967, the dancer and choreographer Samir Akika grew up in Paris and studied in the USA and is now living in Düsseldorf. His biography the countries of origin of his dancers who come from Canada, Italy, Cuba, Vietnam, Namibia, Greece and Germany stand for the positive effects of globalization.Fareed C. Maajari

ABOUT THE CHOREOGRAPHERAhmed Khemis is an Algerian who grew
up in Tunis, discovering dance through
hip hop. At a very young age, he joined
the company of Syhem Belkhodja where,
through technique classes and work-
shops, he learnt the discipline and rigor
of contemporary dance. He continued
this pursuit of adaptation and technical
mastery in France, at the Centre National
de Danse Contemporaine / National Cho-
reographic Centre in Tours in Angers.
In this first personal creation, Ahmed
Khemis decided to put the bare space
of the stage and its silence in service of
this free body exploring territories which
seem be known only to him. With a natu-
ral ease that could almost be mistaken
for nonchalance, his piece is built around
the movement of a pendulum, between
an élan hurrying us towards someplace
new, and a turning inwards, which is not
immobility but rather internal vibration.
“Voyage of dust” affirms an aerial pres-
ence, as light and quivering as a shower
of particles, refreshing the spirit and tak-

Dance’s Doings. Within the framework of Western modernity, dance has evolved as an autonomous art form, claiming its
own aesthetics, its own formal and af-
firmative strategies, its own content and
its own subjectivity. What is today wide-
ly and fuzzily called ”modern dance”
emerged in a period of cultural transi-
tion. Towards the end of the 19th cen-
tury, concepts of fixity and stability in
social, scientific and academic practice
were contested. Instead, it was through
a dynamisation of intellectual and artis-
tic practice that societies tried to grasp
their self-understanding and their social
orientation. Dance as the one art form
most widely associated with movement
and with body lent itself in a “natural”
way to reshape this avening shapeless-
ness of culture, society, and knowledge.
It is in fact one of the striking assets in
the history of modern dance that amidst
a growing concern with alienation, capi-
talisation, mechanisation and obscure
domination by “forces” of modernity
that dance could come about claiming
for its “naturalness”. To this day, we en-
counter frequently the idea that dance
is universal, that it is a language under-
standable to all, no matter what their
cultural, social, or geographical back-
ground may be.
However, this shaping of “naturalness”
through and by dance is not only debat-
able as to its philosophical foundations
(Why would Western stage dance be
“more natural” than abstract painting or
post-modern architecture?). It is also a
quality making itself performative to this
day. For most institutions, both human
and administrative, preserve a very spe-
cific idea on dance’s “true nature” and
dance’s “adequate” appearance. Based
on technically codified movement, per-
formed by a certain type of dancer (edu-
cated, trained, young, energetic, well-
built, …) in a canonised theatre situation,
dance has imposed a strong mechanism
of perpetuating itself as a cultural given
ennobled as it were by its universal qual-
ities of being “understandable to all”.
What is out-ruled by these intellectual
und discursive demeanours is all that
makes dance an individual practice
based on specific conditions both social
and topographical, both intellectual and
physical. In contesting the “naturalisms”
of dance’s doings, the quest for the con-
temporary comes about, trying to rede-
fine, to expropriate the possibilities of
dance to be outside of itself, outside of
its foundations, outside of its limits. If
dance wants to take serious its historic
impulse – testifying of the impossibilities
to fix, determine, and stabilise culture –
than the task would be not to reaffirm
that which is already known, given, or
appreciated, but to go for the unruly, the
disparaging, and the debatable. Or, as
someone has put it: To create something
new from something familiar.

ABOUT THE PERFORMANCEAlone on a bare stage, Radhouane El
Meddeb conjures the presence of loved-
ones and summons a world woven from
the materials, images, ghosts and texts
that it is made of. Through a huge effort of
concentration, the body becomes a core
that distills memories and gives form to
gestures and memories. At the end of this
confrontation with oneself - with truth
and illusion – there may be the momen-
tum to come back to what remains: just
somebody who is going to dance.

When Omar Rajeh came to me and told
me about his idea of an international
platform of dance in Beirut, I gave him
the advice to go slowly and cautiously.
I was convinced that modern dance was
not yet anchored in the cultural “be-
havior” of the Lebanese public which
showed “conservatism” and “traditional-
ism” until then. We were in 2003 I guess
or may be in 2004.
Omar Rajeh did not give too much con-
sideration to my advice.
What followed did not come up to my
expectations and “cautiousness”. And
this gladdens my heart. BIPOD blew a
salutary wind of contemporary dance
over the Lebanese place. The young
enthusiastic and audacious public rode
over the blow getting their share of the
dawning journey that I hope will last as
long as possible.
Nowadays BIPOD and its partners got lo-
cal and international recognition thanks
to their admirable determination.
Looking back on it, I realize that BIPOD
offered me two sorts of satisfaction:

beau projet.

ABOUT THE PERFORMANCEThis is a study, a physical exhibition, an
invisible dance, a fragmented body com-
posing itself to dance. Elements of “the
body” of this dancer are opened up,
how this body is conceived and how it is
moved, expressed or represented. The
dancer here offers his body, naked. Text,
voice, image and mere physical presence
guide the audience through this anatomi-
cal experience of a dancer’s body, reveal-
ing subtle and invisible layers of dance,
to wonder where the dance happens.
ABOUT THE CHOREOGRAPHERAwarded Choreographer, performer and
composer, also founder and current direc-
tor of HaRaKa: Egypt’s first dance research
project, founder of the performance and
movement studies publication “Cairogra-
phy”, and director of “TransDance” Fes-
tival. Received First Prize for Choreogra-

from Cairo Opera House, Egyptian Minis-

as “Young Entrepreneur of the Year” for
performing arts in Egypt. Adham Hafez is
engaged in practice and theory around
semiotics, post-medium practices, ritu-
als, and hybrid forms. His work has been
presented in Egypt, the Arab Speaking
World and Europe.

ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE« It’s a curious feeling that this piece
should have been the first one…A kind
of movement that goes from the inti-
mate to the surface, until it disappears.
A path that constantly uses each one of
my pieces, but maybe this one will not
go further, it stands there, it contains the
scream and ends with it… It is a simple
idea, and endless and vital one…»

ABOUT THE CHOREOGRAPHEREver since his first projects, Rachid
Ouramdane has been dealing with singu-
larity. His performances probe the emo-
tional and imaginary worlds of whom-
ever he encounters. These shows take
shape through the discovery of each per-
son’s uniqueness, where every encoun-
ter gives rise to a different dialogue. The
ever-present video images serve as an
extension of the other, giving us access
into his/her mental space. The image
sets up a dialogue between individuals
and their doubles. Such devices enable
Rachid Ouramdane to get in touch with
the other’s subjectivity and imagination.
ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE“During a recent journey to Vietnam and
to Cambodgia, I discovered a new way to
explore the feeling of being a foreigner.
In a discussion about the violence of the
conflicts that have torn these countries
apart, I remembered the pages of my
father’s military papers; my father, who
was made to crush this Indochina of ear-
lier times. As the discussion progressed,
because of my French nationality, I real-
ized that I was considered the son of a
colonialist, even though what linked my
father to Indochina was the legacy of an-
other colonisation, that to his country,
Algeria. Once again during this conversa-
tion, it struck me that the upheavals and
the devastation caused by the violence
of armed conflict should lead us to reflect
upon the image of the foreigner in many
areas of the world. “ Rachid Ouramdane

On

The Italian Cultural Institute is taking
part this year for the first time in the
BIPOD - Beirut International Platform of
Dance. The Muta Imago dance company
from Rome will perform Lev on the open-

sure. Italy has a longstanding tradition
as far as dance, I would like to remem-
ber the role played by Enrico Cecchetti
who was not only a brilliant virtuoso but
went on to become the leading teacher
of his generation, having Pavlova and
Nijinsky among his students. In more re-
cent times Carla Fracci was a dancer of
international reputation. The Beirut In-
ternational Platform of Dance gives us
a wonderful opportunity to show what
modern ballet has achieved in Italy and
we hope Beirut audience will appreci-
ate our participation which will give the
chance to discover another interesting
aspect of contemporary Italy. I would like

ABOUT THE CHOREOGRAPHERChoreographer of the real, Gilles Jobin ex-
plores the human body by making exact
demands without compromise. Recog-
nized as one of the most inventive cho-
reographers on the international scene,
he juxtaposes received ideas with pieces
that are in effect topographies of the body.
Since founding his company in 1997, he
has performed in over 25 countries, thus
becoming the ambassador for a whole
generation of independent swiss artists.

ABOUT THE PERFORMANCEAvoid what is predictable in the dance
vocabulary as well as in the composi-
tional structures : this aesthetic postu-
late by Gilles Jobin is confirmed by each
of his creations by distinguishing itself
from the previous and by encouraging
the audience “to break their habits”. One
could say that this in itself is the subject
of Black Swan; at any given moment, his
new piece astonishes, surprises, branch-
es off into an unexpected direction; and,
paradoxically, it could also be that it initi-
ates with this creator who is forever on
the lookout, a renewed interest in pure
choreography. Even if Gilles Jobin is a
child of his times and does not duck any
of the issues that dance has had to deal
with in the course of the last years; he
does not shut himself away in anything
(not even his own “systems”) and moves
forward, pushing the questioning into
his material every time a bit further: the
body, and its practice; but also the real
world that does not cease to fluctuate,
to have run-ins with itself, to make and
break itself before our very eyes. […]

THU 30th April 20h30
Theatre Al MadinaDuration: 60 min
ABOUT THE PERFORMANCESanta Sofia talks about the sacrifice.
There is no sacrifice without a body. Our
body is arrogant and it needs to be beaten
to lose mental control and get access to a
new body. This solo talks about a differ-
ent way to enjoy our own body, free from
the stifling and rational presence of our
mind. The character inhabiting the solo,
Sofía Asencio-myself-, is someone so ig-
norant who still believes in mysteries.

ABOUT THE COMPANYSocietat Doctor Alonso (SDA), the stage
director Tomas Aragay and the dancer
and choreographer Sofia Asencio.
We create every performance or project
beginning from point zero, to start again
thinking about our own language. We mix
types of performances and people creat-
ing our own way to occupy the stage.
We like to think of the stage as a place
where spectacularity must be present.
However we put the less spectacular,
creating a poetic of the pathetic.

I arrived to Beirut on the last day of August 2007 to take charge of the direc-
tion of the Instituto Cervantes in Lebanon. After reviewing our cultural pro-
gramming during the past few years, I discovered that one element could not
be changed: the participation of the Instituto Cervantes of Beirut in the Bipod
Festival of contemporary dance, managed by Omar Rajeh.
When something is maintained it is because it works: faithfulness or tradition
are irrelevant at the end.
In April 2008, we participated with the group Malpelo, which is, in my opin-
ion, one of the most advanced and rigorous groups of the contemporary
dance panorama in Spain. I was able to personally note the importance of
the Bipod Festival and the reasons that drove my predecessors in the Insti-
tuto Cervantes of Beirut to support this event without any reservations.
Omar Rajeh knows how to gather on the scene dance groups that speak dif-
ferent languages and manage different techniques, with one thing in com-
mon: talent. The public’s welcome does not surprise me.
The Bipod Festival of contemporary dance is an important part of Beirut’s
cultural life. The spectators attend with the certainty that their expectations
will be fulfilled.
For the Instituto Cervantes of Beirut, it is a privilege to share year after year
this lively meeting that, for its quality and imagination, always rises to the
challenge.

Layering the dancing body and the everyday body
Lead by Giulia Merredu
The body is not always a dancing body in the work of Giulia Mureddu, but some-times also just an everyday body; a container of recognizable emotions and an independent medium to explore .During the workshop we will work on dance ma-terial, which originates from the physical transformation of a movement impulse. We will focus on a methodology of how to break patterns of movements by stimu-lating the analytical ability to manipulate and fragment the movement material in several layers. This will result in a conscious and unconscious detailed use of limbs, weight, space, and often forgotten details like facial expressions, gestures and utterings of the voice. The exercises used involve a specific application of improvisation. They aim at the development of skills to combine structure and improvisation, freedom of imagination and codified language.

The physical presence of light in dance performances and its dramaturgy
lead by Roland Van Ulden
Light is not only a support of a choreography in the work of Roland Van Ulden, but leads its own life, dialogues with the movement of the choreography. In the workshop we will explore how to relate technical knowledge, like properties of lamps, use of color, directions, intensity and timing of transitions, to the drama-turgical line of a scene. We will study, from-out practical examples of previous work of Roland, how to translate the idea’s of the choreographer in to light, or vice-versa, how to translate the ideas of the light-designer into a choreography. In the work-shop we will analyze the different steps needed for a fertile collaboration. How to over-bridge the differences in the dynamic process of imagination between a choreographer and a light designer.

cuses on research and documentation.
It aims at encouraging collaboration
work between artists, experimenting
new concepts, and developing artis-
tic work that is directly related to this
region’s social and cultural contexts.
One of the main objectives for the cre-
ation of this platform is that there is a
need for the development of research
in parallel to practice. One of the major
obstacles, as well, is the lack of pro-
fessional dance criticism, body move-
ment research, and, most of all, the
archiving and documentation needed
for a natural progression and develop-
ment of contemporary dance.
Dancers, choreographers, dance crit-
ics, and other dance professionals,
will gather for four days in Beirut for
discussions and talks related to the
dance residencies, the collaborations,
and the creations presented. The fo-
cus will be on creating an “Ateliers for
creation and experimentation” that
will seek new innovations in the dance
discipline of this region. It is a work-
ing space constructed on new contem-
porary ideas that are contextualized
within a cultural frame. Autumn Dance
creates a strong link between practice
and theory and motivate artists to look
through research for new structures of
dance and movement.
In AD 09 we anticipate more progress
and development that will nourish the
cultural scene in general, and re-es-
tablish the performing arts as a strong
medium playing a major role in the
emergence of contemporary cultural
practices within the regional’s social
and cultural context.

Beirut Contemporary Dance School
The body in performance (pilot project-2009)
3rd of August / 1st of November 09
Maqamat’s newest idea is to create TAKWEEN-BCDS, a dance school for young
artists from Lebanon and the surrounding region that are serious about pursuing
a professional career in contemporary dance.
The training at BCDS is designed to produce highly skilled, creative and intellec-
tually curious dance artists, fully prepared for a career in the world of contempo-
rary dance. The students are encouraged to take ownership of their training and
the direction of their careers. BCDS should run twice a year for three months each
time. however, for the year 2009 there will be one pilot project in order to assess
the need for such a school, the outcomes and possible improvements. This pilot
project will be structured as follows:
The school is open for dancers from Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Egypt and Palestine
and they will be invited to come to Beirut for a three months schooling program.
These dancers and will undergo a full-time intensive training program with pro-
fessional teachers and choreographers.
This pilot project is created in collaboration with the Masahat Dance Network,
Centre Choreographic de Montpelier, Dansgroup Krisztina De Chatel, Koreografisk
Center Archauz, Henrietta Horn.
Supported by the Goethe Institute, Danish Centre for Culture and Development,
and the Norwegian Embassy in Beirut.
Studio Maqamat
MT Dance Space
This new dance space was established
in Beirut in June 2007. It is a laboratory
that aims at developing the dancers
and performers abilities through creat-
ing artistic residencies and workshops.
Moreover, it provides a rehearsal space
for collaborative creations, research,
and artistic interactions.
Recently the space started to offer dif-
ferent dance and movement classes
for dancers and beginners. It also in-
vites local and international artists to
give workshops, initiate discussions
about dance and show their work.
