Date: October 28, 2008

Covalent Bonding

• A chemical bond formed by the sharing of a pair of electrons between atoms.– NO CHARGES!!!!!

• Occurs ONLY between 2 nonmetals– Metalloids are treated as nonmetals

To Name Binary Molecular

• Name the first nonmetal

– Add a prefix ONLY if more than one

• Name the second nonmetal

– ALWAYS add a prefix – regardless of number

– Change the ending to -ide

Prefixes

• Mono1• Di 2• Tri 3• Tetra 4• Penta 5

• Hexa 6• Hepta 7• Octa 8• Nona 9• Deca 10

Random Rule

• If there are two vowels in a row, drop the “a/o” from the prefix

– Never drop an “i”

Practice

• Carbon monoxide• Carbon dioxide• Carbon tetrachloride

• SiF4

• SO2

• SO3

• N2O4

• CO

• CO2

• CCl4

• Silicon tetrafluoride• Sulfur dioxide• Sulfur trioxide• Dinitrogen tetroxide

Complete BM Worksheet

• Quickly work through the Binary Molecular worksheet

• When finished, check it.

• Complete lab
