Our homes and schools also supply another form of electricity called mains electricity. Houses and schools have electrical __________ which supply ___________ electricity. For example, when we plug a ___________ into a socket, the mains electricity provides energy to make the computer work. Some electrical appliances can work by using batteries or mains electricity.
Most of the electrical energy we use is generated by using coal, oil or gas. These are called fossil fuels because They are all produced from dead animals and plants which existed millions of years ago. These will eventually run out so fossil fuels are non-renewable.
Electricity can also be produced from the sun. This is called solar energy. Electricity can be produced from the wind, rivers (hydroelectricity) and waves. (tidal) these types of energy are called renewable because they replace or renew the amount of energy being used.
In groups of 4 or 5 discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using non-renewable and renewable sources to generate electricity.
