LETTERS TO THE EDITORDear Mark,On behalf of Rover-Landers BC and the 19thAnnual Northwest Challenge OrganizingCommittee and entrants, I acknowledge thecontinued support from Rovers North of thisunique event. Thank you for every donation ofgift certificates for each vehicle entry.

The Northwest Challenge was a greatsuccess with entrants from British Columbia,Alberta, Washington and Oregon, and all ofthem were challenged in ways that only aLand Rover owner could truly appreciate.

These events and hosting organizationsare only as successful as the support that isreceived. Thank you for your very generoussupport.Donald MacDonaldRover-Landers of British ColumbiaNorth Vancouver, BCCanada[Rovers North really appreciates the hardwork that clubs do to keep Land Rovermarque values alive and well.Congratulations on a great event -ed]

Dear Rovers North,I drive a Defender 90 daily, and as we allknow they go through parts and I can usuallyfind everything I need at Rovers North. Thanks again and keep up the inventory andknowledgeable people on staff. You’re doinga great job!Rob SmithCascade, CO[I am envious that you get to drive aDefender 90 every day. What a great way tomake the most mundane trips a LandRover adventure –ed]

Hey folks,We appreciate the great service we havereceived from Rovers North in the purchaseswe have made. You are speedy when we areneedy! Living in a non-Rover dealer town, your service has been helpful and as ourRover begins its inevitable mechanicaldecline, Rovers North will be a lifesaver.Jeff JambersCorpus Christi, TX[You join thousands of Land Rover ownerswho live hundreds of miles away from the

nearest Land Rover dealer. For classic LandRover, Range Rover and Discovery enthusi-asts, Rovers North is a valuable lifeline toget the most out of their Rover –ed]

Dear Sir,Last summer, while on a “plains game” safariin Namibia, fully anticipating to be ferriedabout in either a Defender 110 or 130, I wassomewhat disappointed when the vehicle ofchoice turned out to be a diesel-poweredToyota Pickup. I inquired of my two profes-sional hunters, brothers Jaco and Mare Vande Merve, as to why they were using Toyotasrather than Land Rovers to transport theirhunting clients. Their response was that theycould purchase two Toyotas for the price ofone Defender. Later, while spending the nightin Windhoek, I sighted a pristine Defender130 Crew Cab, with a camper top, parked ina hotel parking lot, muttering to myself as towhy this vehicle hasn’t found its way to USshores.Hans SalzingerArlington, VA[The strong pound sterling might be greatfor national pride and central bankers, butit’s not much for export industries. LandRover products cost more than Toyotas,Nissans, or Suzukis and that’s a real chal-lenge for Land Rover. Remember that in theworld of automobile manufacturing, LandRover does not produce many cars. Sothere’s little economy of scale. As for a USDefender, think about our interior safetyand emission regulations –ed.]

To the staff of Rovers NorthEveryone at the Florida Land Rover Clubwould like to extend a huge FLRC thank youfor sponsoring our Fall 2007 Rally. The Rallywas a huge success. We had approximately 65trucks and over 120 people in attendance. From the trail to the meeting hall, our clubmembers share stories of great success withRovers North and all of your staff.

We appreciate your continuous generos-ity. Without folks like you, we would not havethe raffle and the raffle is a big part of our ral-lies. Thanks again for providing us with veryhigh-end products. The proceeds gained

from the sale of raffle tickets ensure the finan-cial stability of the club. On behalf of everyFLRC member, thank you for your generosity.Stephen PetersPresident, FLRC[Congratulations on another successfulrally. Remember to call the Editor directly ifyou need personal delivery of products dur-ing, say, February! –ed]

Behind Sliding Doors:A Look at What’s New at Rovers North

What do you do with an old barn? That’s a good question. Whatabout an old barn that was Rovers North’s sole building when it allbegan? Let’s take a step through the door from the adjacent salesdepartment into the attached barn where old world meets modernday. The barn has character, including an old wooden sliding doorthat we still employ today. It’s a bit cantankerous to manage, unlessyou’ve got some Herculean strength in your arms and torso. Whenthe door slams shut, because there’s no way to close it gingerly, not

only do you hear it, you feel it…from inside the sales department.I’m convinced the contents of the bookshelf on the abutting wall willone day come cascading down on some poor salesman’s head whilehe’s taking a customer’s order. With its poured concrete floor, whichhas “7-10-81” finger-drawn in the once wet cement, the barn onceplayed the role of the Rovers North’s shop. Long before Land Rovershad advanced electronic engine management systems. This wasduring the era of points and condensers, simpler times. If thosefaintly oil-stained floors and post and beam frame could only speak,I’d bet they’d have verses to share on all sorts of projects. Today, steellines for the former shop’s compressed air still course the walls, eventhough they haven’t been used in over a decade. On an adjacent wall

run similar diameter gray plastic pipes, containing the cables for thehigh-speed computer network, which run to the computer thatprocesses receiving and returns. Cobwebs sway lazily from rafters, ina surge of air from the old heater that hangs from the ceiling. Likethe barn, it’s old but it earns its keep heating the workspace.A welcome luxury at the time of installation, considering the barn wasunheated during the first few years it was in service. Keep in mindthis is northern Vermont, where temperatures can stay well below

zero for days, if not weeks, during a cold spell in the winter. Lookingthrough the windows, distant picturesque mountains create thehorizon, past the small family-run farms that run up and downRoute 128.

Ages ago, it housed a helical staircase, which was the only meansof getting to the second floor. The majority of the parts for ourmail order customers and our shop were stored there. Bulky parts, like exhaust systems were scary to handle on the narrow andprecariously steep staircase. One wrong move and you’d go tumblingdown, with whatever you were carrying, like Humpty Dumpty. Today,we climb a much wider and reassuring set of stairs to the secondfloor, where it’s remains unheated. There’s pink fiberglass insulation

9

visible in the ceiling and daylight shining up from the gaps in betweenthe floorboards. These days, the second floor is used as storage foreverything from old invoices, wing skins, windscreens, and an arrayof slightly used vintage parts. A yellowed box of invoices partiallyblocks an old poster, advertising Fairey Overdrives, which looks likeit’s been hanging there since Series trucks were rolling off theassembly lines in Solihull.

While the barn is nothing fancy to look at, which is just the waywe like it; a lot goes on behind that quarrelsome sliding door. Foryears, the shipping and receiving departments were combined in onewarehouse, which replaced the barn’s cramped storage duties. Whilethis layout worked for years, our business has since grown, alongwith the volumes of both shipping and receiving.

The increased volume and variety of parts entering the receivingdepartment, shared with the shipping department, jeopardized

efficiency for the following reasons: incoming parts couldinadvertently get mixed up with existing inventory and be mislabeledand/or misplaced. Furthermore, by moving the receiving departmentto another location within Rovers North, we can organize and opti-mally utilize existing space while offering ourselves more room toexpand when the time comes.

How does this move help us provide better customer service?Seeing as the cycle of processing a returned part begins in thereceiving department, moving the receiving department to a morespacious location helps efficiency. With an increase in space, RoversNorth can methodically process returns in terms of “first in, first out”,rather than having returns congest the shelves and fall out of

sequence. While we tried to avoid this, space limitations used toconstrict what we consider an acceptable time frame for a return.Furthermore, the move enabled us to set questionable parts aside fora more thorough investigation. Now, they can be separately sortedand/or stored until the following can be determined: return the partto stock, label it for sale as a clearance item, or send it back to LandRover as a genuinely defective part. In addition, the new location ofour receiving area is adjacent to the sales department, easingcommunication with sales in the case of a questionable return.

While relocating the receiving department, we’ve alsoreallocated where some of our larger items, such as Hi-Lift jacks andour full line of exhaust systems, to increase efficiency for the pick andpack team. By inventorying some of our larger items closer to thereceiving department, the warehouse team no longer has to take timemanaging bulky items from one side of the warehouse to the other,

and back again when it comes time to ship a part. The receiving department has been relocated for a number

of weeks now, and the improvements in efficiency are quitenoticeable. As for the old barn, it’s still in use, playing a vital role atRovers North!

PETERSHAM, MA, September 22-23 - The weather was idealfor the 4th Annual ALL-Metal Dash Rover Meet weekend inPetersham. Many showed up Friday afternoon from as far awayas Michigan.

A large number vendors did well with their used parts, too. George Maattala brought in a 109” with a six-cylinderChevrolet engine for sale plus a truckload of parts. GarrettBourgue came in with a 109” lengthened to 140” (wheelbase)with a Ford drivetrain, loaded with Land Rover parts.

On Saturday morning, the first tech session was by LesParker of Rovers North on the electrical system of the SeriesLand Rovers, followed by Alan Richer on overhauling thewindshield wiper motor units. These units are loaded withsmall springs, washers and other small parts that have to goin exactly to the right place with special grease that cost$150.00 a tube.

The third session was by Tom Bache on solid button headaluminum rivets. These were hammered in with an air guntooled with special mandrel, which conforms to the rivet head.

Late in the afternoon, an adventurous Mike Flye led agroup of Rovers green laning (off-roading). His first attempthad a gate across at the far end. This could have been easilybypassed, except Garrett’s 140” was not designed for sharpmaneuvers. Upon returning to the start, another route wasselected. This, once again, was very good for some distanceuntil they approached a very low place that the beavers hadflooded. Due to the Land Rovers not being equippedwith snorkels or drivers’ courage, they again returned tothe highway.

Mike, still determined to green lane to a restaurant, led athird attempt. This one got them through, but after dark. The remainder of the evening was spent back at the site arounda campfire.

On Sunday there was a short breakfast run, then back formore socializing and trading of parts.

So you want to buy a Defender? Join the club – it’s a rare Land Roverenthusiast who does not covet one of the NAS Land Rovers.

You don’t have a lot of choice. Officially, only two models madeit into the North American market. The Defender 110 made a hugesplash in 1993 when the uniquely numbered and specially-kitted-outexamples were imported into the US and Canada. With their “safari”cages and stark white paint, they were instantly identifiable andhelped reestablish the Land Rover image for new enthusiasts. TheDefender 90 that followed between 1994 –1997, whether in uniquesoft top or station wagon mode, became the off-roader’s car ofchoice.

Regardless of the engine [3.9 or 4.0 liters] or transmission[LT77 or R380, or ZF automatic] choice, the brilliant drivetrain andsuspension design assured you of extraordinary off road capabilityand safe interstate driving. Whether you score a Defender 110, ofwhich only 500 were officially imported in 1993, or the Defender 90,of which about 7,000 came into the North American market, you hada car that absolutely, positively everyone knows is a Land Rover.

What should you look for in searching out a Defender?

Mark Letorney of Rovers North says that “corrosion is thegreatest problem. Look at the rear frame member of the chassis. Justlike in a Series Rover, if it’s rusty, you can suspect rust elsewhereon the frame. The second place is the doors, where Rover useddissimilar metals. Pull up the carpets and look at floors – you mightfind corrosion there, too.”

“Once you’ve looked over the car, take it for a test drive. Thegreat thing about the Defender is that it hides nothing. You’ll heareverything that’s going on as you drive it. When you shift, you’llhear and feel if the transmission is working correctly, the clutch isoperating properly and the suspension components need work. If youhear whining or clunking, crawl underneath to shake the propshaftor the suspension bushings. Check the fluid levels, too. They’ll tell youwhether the car has been properly maintained.”

“The V-8 might have high mileage on it so you’ll want to do acompression test and cylinder leak down test. Also, check whether

21

the engine has been overhauled or replaced. Make certain thejob was done right and that the engine was properly maintained. The cooling system works hard on Defenders; check the radiator forfresh antifreeze and little corrosion on the cooling fins.”

“Lastly, beware of a car that’s been over-accessorized. Makecertain that all components work with the suspension geometry of thecar. You don’t want an off-road giant that becomes unsafe on thehighway. For example, if you see a car with a lift kit, check the swaybars. If they’ve been removed, what would the car be like on the openroad in daily use?”

Mike Smith of East Coast Rover, Rockland, ME, has maintained, refurbished and restored many Defenders. First off, he notes that“Defenders are Series III’s on steroids. The love of a Defenderis a love of things antique. You need to love to maintain. It requiresantique car-type maintenance. He says that evidence ofknowledgeable maintenance and the right parts are critical todetermining the likely condition of a Defender.”

“For example, the fuel injection relays are located in a seatlocker where over time, they’ll get corroded and/or fail. If you knowto look for this, you’ll save yourself unnecessary replacement of fuelpumps and injectors. But you need to get the right replacement, theGenuine Land Rover Parts 5-pin relay. Using the generic 4-pinone means that the oxygen sensors will not send out the correctinformation to a diagnostic system. So your car might start finebut then stall out when it warms up. The missing pin is making all thedifference.”

“Oil changes are important for several reasons. Mostimportantly the Rover V-8 is inherently an older design that countedon 3,000 mile changes for long life. If you’re used to oil and filterchanges at 10,000 or 25,000 miles, don’t assume that you can waitthat long on your Defender, too.”

“There’s an old saw about Land Rovers that if they don’t leak, they’re out of something. But you shouldn’t see copious leaks fromtransfer case seals or driveshaft pinion seals – that’s a sign of neglect.Off roading tends to push dirt into the seals and that causes the leaks. The conscientious owner will replace damaged seals so they stop gritand water from entering, not wait for them to leak out. “

“You won’t believe how much bad wiring we have to undo, so becareful of cars with lots of accessories and demand evidence that theywere installed to professional standards. Look at the core ofDefender, not the brightwork or off-road equipment. Unfortunately, the small number of Defenders sold in the US means that the dealernetwork doesn’t always have that knowledge base on staff.”

Above all else, remember that all Land Rovers love maintenance.Mike Smith notes he just purchased a Discovery Series II with260,000 miles. It has a service stamp for every service interval.Except where a dog chewed the seat and the failure of a subwoofer, everything works on the Rover. That’s a cautionary tale for theDefender buyer. Check that maintenance work shows evidence ofknowledge, high standards of repair and/or installation, and GenuineParts or tested accessories. Then you’ll have a Defender for the ages.

Simply IrresistibleStory by Mike Koch Photos by Matt Martin

31

I’ve done something that I never thought I’d do. I recently purchasedan Alpine White 1993 Range Rover Classic short wheelbase. Howexciting, until you hear what I paid for it. It’s an $1,100 Range RoverClassic. “I thought those were expensive, Mike.” A 175,000-mileRange Rover Classic. “That’s no spring chicken, Mike.” A RangeRover Classic that’s spent it’s entire tour of duty in the northernreaches of Vermont. “Good from far, but far from good, Mike.” Withits leather seats and walnut dash, it still presents proudly enoughto take a date out to a respectable restaurant. For years, I’vebeen interested in Series Rovers; vehicles that are somewhatstraightforward to repair with simple hand tools, don’t have to beplugged in to a computer to be diagnosed, don’t depreciate fasterthan a concert Steinway falling from a skyscraper.

Speaking of which, Range Rover Classics are certainly attainablethese days, but you should scrutinize over each example you look atbecause a so-called value may end up costing you down the road. AreRange Rover Classics a better value now than ever? In 1993, minehad an MSRP of about $44,500 when it rolled off its showroom floor(literally, it was the display model). At the time of registration, thelocal Department of MotorVehicles taxed me based onits book value, roughly$3,500. (remember towatch out for the fallingpianos...) How on earthdid these cars depreciateso much?

Let’s take a look atwhat it takes to keep oneof these discreet statusindicators on the road andin service. According to myrudimentary calculations, after commuting in iteveryday for about a month, it gets a magnificent 12.5 mpg. A RangeRover Classic will never be mistaken for a Prius. Thankful, for theplanet we live on, I’ve been militant about my recycling chores lately. The Range Rover’s so-called fuel economy is a “value” in a distortedway. I like to think about it like this: it has twice the number ofcylinders than my Series and multitudes more horsepower and speed. The Range Rover cruises effortlessly at 70 mph, whereas my 109”once saw a record speed of 62 mph on a steep downhill, afrightening experience altogether. The Range Rover is all-wheel-driveall the time, whereas the Series is in rear-wheel-drive during most ofits travels. What are some of the more expensive parts to replace? AnABS pump retails at about $1,200. What about the ABS valve block, which retails at around $1,500? (I hope that doesn’t decide to stopfunctioning, especially since this Classic weighs in at 4,401 lbs.!) Theviscous unit in the Borg Warner transfer case retails at about $1,600,not counting labour and other items that should probably be replacedat the same time - like the chain, gears and seals. At which point, ittypically pays to replace the entire transfer box instead of fixing what’sbroken. Corrosion is a constant battle in New England, especially

when owning a Range Rover Classic. Perhaps 1993 is the best modelyear for the short wheelbase, as it has the benefits of ABS and ETCwithout the troublesome aging EAS. I’m trying to come up with afigure on a repair that would potentially send this car to an earlygrave. When will we reach the point of diminishing returns? Howmuch do I love this Classic?

Immeasurably. So, what’s it all about? What does this RangeRover bring to my life other than high fuel consumption and thedreaded question of “what if?” It’s like no other car I’ve driven orowned-and I’ve owned quite an embarrassingly high number for aman of my age. What I like the most about driving it is the way itmakes me feel while driving it. When I drive my Range Rover, I feellike entitled royalty. It has that certain “je na sais quoi” of making itsdriver feel superior to other motorists surrounding him or her. Whilespeaking to some fellow Classic enthusiasts the other night, we allagreed, that until you drive one on a regular basis, you really can’tgrasp the aura this car beholds. I’ve heard the following: “All RangeRovers are cars, but not all cars are Range Rovers.” Narcissistically, Iadmire my reflection while driving my Range Rover past those shiny

glass-faced contemporaryoffice buildings in town.“Make way for the king of‘Vermontistan’ in his 1993Range Rover Classic!”Enough about myoverly-inflated ego whiledriving the Range Rover; it’salso great for loading upwith friends and headingout to dinner in style. This late Range RoverClassic just might be myfavorite Land Rover.

From its formidabledriving height, I feel like I’m towering over all the other motorists onan imperial level. Like riding in a palanquin on the back of apachyderm, I feel safe. All nonsequitors aside, the Classic’s timelessdesign looks “just right;” think of it as Goldylocks. The other night,I parked it in front of my Burlington condo and stood admiring it foralmost five minutes. My neighbors must consider me mad. TheClassic looks smart, and its exterior styling remained largelyunchanged from its debut in 1970 till the end of its production in1995! There’s no mistaking my Range Rover for any other SUVresembling a melted cough drop, in any parking lot.

It is chock-full-of-amenities. I routinely appreciate it’s factoryfitted 120-watt a/d/s stereo with 6-disc CD changer (andweatherband), walnut dash, heated windscreen, glass sunroof, puddle lamps in the bottoms of the doors, ABS, ETC, power windows(the three that work), power locks, and leather heated power seats(more on that later). One of my favorite luxuries is the auto-dimmingrearview mirror; it perfectly cuts the glare from those bothersomeHID headlamps. Its uprated suspension was genuinely put to the testthe other morning as I swerved to avoid a motorist even less awake

Page 32: Winter 2008 Rovers North News

32

than myself! The purposeful burble, at idle, emanating from its NRPperformance exhaust is wondrous, making the engine sound largerthan its 3.9 liters. I love this Rover!

By now, you’re certainly asking yourself “what’s wrong with it?”Or, “He got suckered.” No, I’m afraid not. So what if three of the fourdoors and power windows are operational? While the rearcrossmember is a bit flaky, the car was repainted about two yearsago and it’s had Genuine waterproof seat covers since its first ownertook delivery. Seeing as I’m probably going to be the last ownerof this machine, now is the perfect time to enjoy the leather fit forroyalty. As soon as I drove it home for the first time, off came thecovers and I promptly cleaned and conditioned the well-preservedhides. While the transfer case prefers not to go into LO range, thisClassic’s been painstakingly maintained (e.g.: Amsoil synthetics allaround since day one) since new and has had a lot of recent work:heater core (quite a job, as half the dash must be removed), newbrakes lines and calipers all around, new Genuine HD springs andBilsteins, full NRP stainless steel performance exhaust system, K&Nair filter, Hella Vision Plus headlamps, tune ups, fuel pump, liftgate, etc. All the stuff that makes owners sell these cars, usually at asubstantial loss. Heated power seats? Sure, it’s got them, but theydon’t work as the factory intended.

Speaking of dodgy electrics, while I was in New York for theThanksgiving holiday, I lent the keys to a friend visiting the area from

out of town. I asked him how things went with my Range Rover, expecting to be amused by a memorable story or two. It wentsomething like this: “Well, funny you should ask because theother night I was driving a bit faster than the posted limit on someunfamiliar country road and suddenly, while cresting a hill, thebrights decided to extinguish themselves. Once I “turned off” thebrights using the stalk on the steering column, the headlamps workedagain. So, I guess you don’t have brights anymore, but the rest of thecar works perfectly and I even left some petrol in it for you. Thanksfor letting me drive it, and I know what you mean about that royalseating position and that luxurious, unhurried feeling while you’rebehind the wheel.” Note: The brights are back in service, afterreplacing a 15 amp fuse.

On a slightly darker note, the other day, my Range Roverstranded me mid-commute. It genuinely got stuck and I don’t meanoff-road. Was this the end for my freshly acquired Range Rover? Ourcourtship was surely too young for that! To make a long story shortthe parking brake got stuck ON, immobilizing me as I tried to pull outof a parking spot. A bit possessed on the part of my Range Rover, considering the parking brake wasn’t applied when I parked it! Theshoes got jammed up against the inside of the drum and fell on thefloor upon removal of the drum. I’ll spare you the details of thisrepair, but you can imagine I employed a rather cost-effectiveapproach.

Page 33: Winter 2008 Rovers North News

33

Ever since I took delivery, the reardifferential leaked. It leaked horrendously, reminiscent of a colander, thanks to all thosequaint Vermont winters. Objectively, I filled itevery other day. I kept using Amsoil syntheticgear oil, knowing that if it were to empty, at leastits bearing and gears would be coated in lushsynthetic lubrication. I took it to a local LandRover specialist who drained the differential, cleaned it, coated it in thick marine-gradeepoxy, and covered the epoxy in black paint, after allowing it to harden at room temperaturefor a few days; the perfect fix for my $1,100Range Rover.

Why not properly weld the axle case shutfrom the inside, and outside, whilst removingthe rear differential? The labour bill for that jobalone might cost more than what I paid for theentire Range Rover! That’s what makes thesecars a great value. So long as you havean affordable source for quality parts, andyou’re resourceful with your hands, thesevehicles are a considerable value! Aside fromits thirsty fuel habit and depreciation, thisRover is loaded to the gills with comfort andrefinement, not to mention character that youjust cannot put a price on. Is this Range Roverrestorable? Surely, but it’s also replaceable! Ifsomething goes horribly wrong or it rots outbeyond recognition, I’ll part it out and gladlybuy a replacement. These cars aren’t nearly asrestorable as a Series or Defender, seeing asthey have more complex systems and some ofthe interior and exterior bits are no longer inproduction. In the meantime, mine will have anice retirement, driving me to and from RoversNorth. As for yourselves, go out and buy aRange Rover Classic. Once you take it home, acquaint yourself with all of its systems and stayon top of the maintenance. This isn’t a vehiclethat only requires its owner to performoil changes and a full tank of fuel. If youare balking at the fuel consumption bill, thisprobably isn’t the right car for you. Find awell-sorted example, or you’ll only condemn myrecommendation.

As for me, owning this Range Rover Classicis quite an upgrade in luxury from my 109”military. I can’t say that for a daily driver I’llbe back in my Series anytime soon.

Let the Sisyphean task of Land Roverownership and maintenance continue…

LAND ROVER REVEALS 60th ANNIVERSARY DEFENDERSPECIAL EDITION AT THE BRITISH RED CROSS BALLLand Rover will celebrate its 60th anniversary with a new specialedition of the iconic Defender – the SVX.

The Land Rover Defender SVX was unveiled for the first time byZara Phillips at the British Red Cross Ball in London earlier thisevening. The world's first SVX has been donated by Land Rover UK tothe British Red Cross to auction at the ball.

"The Red Cross association with Land Rover goes back to 1954,when Land Rover supplied a vehicle to the British Red Cross for usein Dubai as a mobile dispensary," said James Johnstone, chairman forthe British Red Cross Ball. "We are thrilled that Land Rover continuesto support our vital humanitarian work today. Funds raised fromauctioning this vehicle will go towards the work of the Red Cross inthe UK and overseas, which this year has included the UK floods,Darfur Crisis and ongoing HIV work in Africa."

While most of the 25,000 Defenders produced each year areworking tools for everyone from farmers and foresters to aidagencies, the SVX is the most stylish and feature-packed version thatLand Rover has ever produced.Special Edition Features:

With metallic black paintwork and subtle satin black graphicdecals, the Defender SVX will be available in both 90 soft-top and90 station wagon versions. Distinctive exterior features have acontrasting silver finish, such as the unique 'Defender' and 'SVX'badges, tubular side-steps, and the bold surround for the front grilleand new, clear-lens headlamps. All vehicles will also feature new,‘diamond turned’ five-spoke alloy wheels, a reinforced aluminiumfront undershield and clear LED rear lights.

To bring the SVX interiors right up to date, they are equippedwith custom-designed Recaro front seats, distinctive alloy gear knobs,a new audio system (with subwoofer and USB socket), iPod cradleand Garmin satellite navigation. The soft-top models are especiallyeye-catching, with a metallic silver tubular cage that supports atailor-made, removable black fabric hood. This encloses a flatload-space and a spare wheel stowed behind the front seats, reminiscent of the very first open-top Land Rovers. Each SVX modelfor the UK will also come fitted with an individually numbered plaque,i.e. 001.

"The Defender SVX looks very different to a spartan 1948 LandRover, but it's still an essentially practical vehicle that will enable youto go almost anywhere," says Phil Popham, Land Rover's managingdirector. "The new and much more refined diesel engine introducedearlier this year has been a great success with customers, and forthose who want the ultimate Defender, we thought that the SVXspecial edition would be an ideal way to mark Land Rover's 60thbirthday."

A total of 200 SVX vehicles will be made available in the UK- 140two-seat Defender 90 soft-tops and 60 four-seat 90 station wagons.Production of the Defender SVX will start in Spring 2008, withdeliveries to customers starting from early summer for soft-tops andlater in the summer for station wagons. Prices will be announcedlater in the year.

BRITAIN 'S MOST PRACTICAL 4x4 DISCOVEREDThe Land Rover Discovery 3 has been named Britain's most practical4x4 in a test conducted by Planet 4x4 Magazine.

In the first assessment of its kind, the Discovery 3 scored animpressive 93 points out of a total 100 and beat off competition fromthe Mercedes GL, Audi Q7, Nissan Pathfinder and Lexus RX.

"This is a great achievement for the Discovery, which has provedtime and time again it is three cars in one. It has now won nearly 100awards since launch in 2004, making it one of the most decoratedSUVs ever," said John Edwards, Land Rover UK managing director.

Alan Kidd, editor of Planet 4x4 added: "This is probably the mostintense scrutiny a group of 4x4s has ever been put under. Our testerscrawled all over each of the 38 vehicles, examining every last detail ofwhat makes a car easy to live with.

"There are some incredibly clever packaging solutions out there- but nothing to beat the Discovery 3. From its handy double glovebox to its brilliant seat-folding system, it sets the standard for loadcarrying and does a proper job of taking seven fully grown adults. It'sa perfectly executed example of how a vehicle's interior should be,and richly deserves the title of Britain's Most Practical 4x4."

The seven-seat Discovery 3 GS is available on the road from£29,815 which includes a CO2 offset for the first 45,000 miles.

LAND ROVER OFF-ROAD TRAINING FOR NATIONALGRID ENGINEERSLand Rover has won a contract to deliver a dedicated trainingprogramme for National Grid Wireless, the leading provider of largescale transmission infrastructure to broadcasters and mobiletelecommunications operators in the UK. The training course hasbeen developed to enable engineers who drive 4x4 vehicles to copewith adverse conditions on and off road.

The National Grid Wireless announcement comes hard on theheels of an order to supply 49 Discovery 3 vehicles to the HighwaysAgency, the organisation responsible for maintaining and operatingEngland's motorways and major A roads. Land Rover will beproviding expert tuition for the Highways Agency.

Land Rover's UK Marketing Director, Andy Griffiths, said: "Wework with emergency services, police, and ambulance teams acrossthe country. With nearly 60 years of experience in overcoming theelements and negotiating any terrain, we have a wealth of experienceto share with organisations such as National Grid Wireless.”

Peter Sanders, General Manager, Operational Services, atNational Grid Wireless, added: “This specifically tailored trainingprogramme will ensure that the company’s field operations team has

the knowledge and ability to use 4x4 vehicles safely and effectively;in all weather conditions and terrains.”

There are nine Land Rover Experiences throughout the UK, eachwith its own unique off-road course featuring some of the mostchallenging surfaces and terrain any driver could encounter. Theyprovide the perfect setting in which to develop confidence and skillunder expert tuition from highly trained instructors.

Land Rover supplies a quarter of the global aid agency mar-ket and is involved in numerous important conservation pro-grammes worldwide, which are hugely beneficial to local commu-nities. Without the use of Land Rovers, some of their rescue mis-sions or emergency operations would be impossible.

Nearly two-thirds of the Land Rovers produced since 1948 arestill being driven, many in conditions where no other vehicle is capa-ble of being used.

LAND ROVER FREELANDER 2 VOTED SCOTTISH SUV OF THEYEAR 2007The Land Rover Freelander 2 has won the title of Scottish SUV of theYear at the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers' (ASMW) annualawards ceremony in St Andrew's this evening.

The all-new Land Rover Freelander 2 received the majority votefrom the ASMW members in this category, fighting off compe-tition from the new Honda CR-V, the Nissan X-TRAIL, Subaru Tribeca,Citroën C-Crosser, Peugeot 4007 and the Mitsubishi Outlander.

Presenting the award, ASMW President Stephen Park said:"Numerous new SUVs have been launched during the past 12 months. Some offer unrivalled off-road ability, others refined on-roadmanners, some dwarf everything else on the road while others aresmaller than some family hatchbacks. But ultimately, one 4x4impressed the judges more than all the rest. Winning by a bigger mar-gin than any other category winner, our choice looks good, feels goodand has real pedigree breeding."

Land Rover UK's managing director, John Edwards, said: "We areabsolutely delighted to win this award for Freelander 2 from theAssociation of Scottish Motoring Writers. It is yet another testa-ment to its dynamic design, all round capability and its smart and spa-cious interior package."

"Scotland is an important area for Land Rover's UK business, with sales up 21 per cent so far this year. The geography of the regionmeans that an SUV is a practical choice for many customers."

The Freelander 2 is on-sale at Land Rover dealerships through-out the UK, priced from £20,935, including the contribution to offsetcarbon dioxide emissions. It has already sold over 15,000 units in theUK this year.

The biggest selling model is still the TD4 manual with a com-bined fuel economy figure of 37.7mpg and CO2 emissions of194g/km.

Just days before this issue of The NEWS was to go to press the TATAGroup’s acquisition of Jaguar-Land Rover was officially announced. At this time the details of the deal are still being ironed out, but bothparties have committed to the transaction and the negotiations arelikely to be concluded by time you read this. Of course this newinformation makes the story we had intended to run in this spot, entitled “Whose Your Daddy?” focusing on the uncertainty in the nextowner of Jaguar-Land Rover, a bit behind the times. Now that we knowwho our daddy is, I am interested in finding out a little bit more abouthim and discuss some of the possible ramifications for Jaguar-LandRover and the North American Market.

Originally a locomotive manufacturer, the Tata Group of Indiawas established in 1945. When India gained independence in 1947it expended a great amount of resources in its rail system andTata flourished. Seeing automobiles as the future, Tata acquiredtechnology from Daimler-Benz AG and began manufacturing trucks.Since then, Tata has diversified into steel, power, hotels andinformation technologies. However, Tata is still best known for itsbig, simplistic trucks (such as the ones pictured about) that arepopular throughout the Asian market.

Renowned for efficient and cost effective manufacturing Tata hasbeen very successful in keeping costs down to maximize profits.

A remarkable example of Tata’s ability to produce vehiclesinexpensively can be seen in their new car designed especially for theIndian market, which is scheduled to be unveiled shortly, that is saidto retail at only 100,000 rupees ($2,500)! Having an understandingof Tata’s modus operandi raises some serious questions about theirintentions for Jaguar- Land Rover.

The first question in many analysts’ mind is: What will become ofthe Land Rover production facilities in the UK? With an eyefor efficiency, Tata has incentive to completely shut down the UKproduction ASAP and relocate production to India where they cancombine with current facilities and take advantage of cheap labor.

This seems logical as other manufacturers are choosing India. GM isspending $6 billion to build a plant and develop vehicles in India forthe vehicles in the Asian market.

Another prime reason to close the UK production facilities is thatTata could then develop the valuable real estate on which the Solihullfacility is located. Surely this is within the scope of an organization asdiverse as the Tata Group. And so it seems likely that Tata will moveproduction to India, cuting up the Jaguar-Land Rover that we havecome to know and love.

GASP! What will happen to the quality of Land Rovers? After allIndian production is not renowned for quality and Tata is certainly

not spared this criticism. How reliable can a $2,500 car be? ManyAmericans pay that much for quality bicycles and we want LandRovers that will last. Will the American market support Land Roversmade in India? Could this be the beginning of the end of Land Roveras we have known? The sky is truly falling.

Hold on to your feathers Chicken Little, there is good reason tobelieve the sky isn’t falling just yet: A very strong argument can bemade that Tata plans to change little with Jaguar-Land Rover, despitethe fact that everyone knows Jaguar could use some change as it hasbeen loosing money for decades.

One major reason not to promptly end production in the UKis the employees. UK workers have very strong labor contracts andrelocating promptly would leave Tata paying significant severancepackages. It makes no sense for Tata to move to India to takeadvantage of cheap labor while they are still paying the Brits they justput out of work. Cost of labor is not the only reason to keepproduction in the UK, moving Jaguar-Land Rover from the UK willdisrupt brand loyalty.

Tata knows that the value of Jaguar-Land Rover is based onprestige, which would be significantly devalued by Asian production. It makes little sense to purchase Jaguar-Land Rover and spend moremoney on new production facilities in order to lower productioncosts if the demand for those brands will be adversely affected. Tatawould be exposed to a lot less risk if they were to simply aquireJaguar-Land Rover and enjoy the profitability of Land Rover rightwhere it is. When discussing what Tata plans to do with Land Rover, itis crucial to ask ‘Why did Tata purchased Jaguar-Land Rover?’ Inorder to answer that it helps to look at the Indian economy and theproducts Tata is currently making.

India is the world’s second fastest growing economy after China. With a newly emerging middle class and a growing upper class thedemand for luxury vehicles is growing rapidly in India. While Tata hasbeen producing trucks for decades, its first venture into cars was onlyten years ago and $2500 car has been their only new design since.Tata has yet to release the affordable luxury cars and SUVs that theIndian market is ready for and it is because they don’t have thetechnology.

Some analysts are seeing Tata’s acquisition of Jaguar-Land Roveras a technology grab more than anything else. This is not a new role

for Land Rover, as many claim BMW’s temporary ownership of LandRover allowed them to gain the technology necessary to produce theBMW X5 SUV for less of an investment than developing it on theirown. If indeed the Jaguar-Land Rover purchase was primarily atechnology grab, then follows that Tata may not want to put muchenergy into changing things before reselling.

So I have covered the worst-case scenario and the business asusual possibility, but is it possible that TATA’s purchase could be agood thing for us North American Land Rover aficionados? Considerthis: What if TATA kept producing the luxury vehicles in Solihul andmoved the Defender production to India?! If Range Roversproduction remained in England the rich would still buy them, rappers would still “floss”‘ them lyrically (assuming they could stillput big shiny spinning rims on them), and the status quo wouldremain. Indian production of the Defender could significantly lowercosts as Defenders are a very labor intensive product. Of course theIndian manufactured Defender would also be prime for the US mar-ket which is clamoring for Defenders. Recently a relatively stock, lowmileage NAS Defender 110 went for $80,000 at the Barrett-JacksonAuto Auction. TATA must certainly recognize the demand forDefenders in the USA. The question remains, do we really want anIndian-made Defender? Just a few hundred words ago I was sayingthe quality would be less than par. OF COURSE we want Indian madeDefenders! Lets face it, Defender production quality wasn’t that greatin England, lets give the Indians a try! For all we know the Indianproduction could be better. I just want to know, can we get somediesels too?

Of course it is impossible to do anything more than hazard aguess at the future of Land Rover, so I am going to leave my officialopinion out. I hope this article has allowed you to make up your ownmind as to whether our beloved Land Rover is in for rocky times orthe second coming of the Defender. It is certainly worth noting theirony of the situation: Jaguar and Land Rover, two brands that embodythe posh British colonizing spirit, are now owned by a former colony.Who would have ever imagined the decisions of business men in Indiaaffecting the livelihood of factory workers of the UK?! This sounds likepoetic justice to me.

A Swiss Army Knife at theMid Atlantic Rally By Tami Sutherland

[Tami Sutherland, an internet software developer, just movedfrom Clearwater, FL to Grottoes, VA, no doubt inspired by heraffection for her LR3 and the famous Mid-Atlantic Rally. Here’sher account of the October 2007 event –ed.]

Now let’s see, what do I have here? My rain jacket, umbrella, a newpair of Wellies, a month-and-a-half worth of clothes; hmmm, maybeI should bring an extra umbrella, just in case.

This was my first trip to the Mid-Atlantic Rally, also known by itsacronym, the MAR. I’ve heard plenty about this event in years past, everything from major carnage adventures on the Pearls Pond trails,to odd tales of blow up animals and urinal cakes in the Philly Roverscircus tent (probably best not to ask more about that). The recollec-tions vary from person to person, but one detail remains constant ineveryone’s MAR memories: it’s wet, cold, soaking, drenching, rainy, muddy mayhem, and it’s a blast. Prepared for the traditional MARforecast, I could hardly wait to head up to Virginia and see how theywork it on the east side, rain or shine.

Hitting Interstate 75 to begin the 1,100-mile hike northward, I’mfull of excitement and anticipation. I wonder how my LR3 will do.Actually, I’m wondering more about how I will do. I’ve got a lot moreconfidence in my Land Rover’s abilities than in my own to be honest.I have found the LR3 to be incredible in its off-road abilities – me, notso much. I’m what you call a ‘newbie.’

Four hours into the journey, I come to the small town of AlligatorCreek. Shoot, I’m still in Florida? At a stop light, a couple of somewhattoothless creatures in a pick-up shout over to me, “is that there asnorkel?” I give a little nod and smile, discreetly check my doorlocks, and continue on my way.

Feeling a bit anxious about what lessons I will be learning at MAR(hopefully none involve blow-up animals). I learn something newevery time I go off-road. I learn more about my Rover’s strengths andlimitations. I learn how to maneuver tougher obstacles and differentterrains, and am gradually becoming a better, more confidentoff-roader. I’ve been lucky though, to have had experienced mentorsand spotters to put my full trust in, and I think that is key. I havefound the seasoned Land Rover crowd to be so knowledgeable, encouraging, and genuinely helpful to newbies – listen and learn, andtry to absorb their wisdom.

After a short-ish jaunt through the southeast corner of Georgia,I pass the ‘Welcome to South Carolina’ sign. A little fatigued, butmaking progress – three states to go! I’m feeling a bit antsy, so crankup the some Old Crow Medicine Show tunes. Another LR3 whizzes byme. I catch up to them, thinking we could entertain each other fora spell, but they won’t even look in my direction. Figures, they’re

probably in a hurry to the Macy’s White Sale, I think cynically. There aren’t too many LR3s on the trails yet. We are pioneers of

sorts I suppose. This lends to some skepticism and curiosity to newLand Rovers. I’ve sort of gotten used to the stares, snickers, and ‘It’stoo clean!’ jabs when I roll up. It used to freak me out, but many havechanged their tune some after going on the trails with me. Sure, theLR3 may not be for everybody, and like all vehicles, it has its shortcomings, but for me it is absolutely perfect – it’s the Swiss Army Knifeof Land Rovers.

As I near Charlotte, North Carolina, my MAR anticipation iswearing thin, diverted by a sore rump, and major boredom. I can doit, just 4 ! hours to go. Good Lord.

Welcome to Virginia! I could kiss that sign. Suddenly I get a burstof energy, jam to the Old Crow Medicine Show for the umpteenth timewith new vigor. I call my darling friend Dan Chapman and let himknow I’m almost there. I will be hanging with him and friends fromPhiladelphia Rovers. They are such a wonderful fun-loving bunch andI can’t wait to see them all again. Also looking forward to meetingsome of the other legendary characters I’ve heard about. Let the goodtimes begin!

On the drive to Pearls Pond, I follow Dan Chapman in his 1997trail-blazing Discovery Series I, and Walter Dent with his deartent-mate Bobbi in his souped up 2000 Discovery Series II. We arearriving to the campsite on Wednesday, so there is just a handful ofRover heads around for the first night. We stake out a prime spot, setting up camp near the legendary Philly Rover’s tent. Tonight we justkick back and relax, have some drinks from the full bar, and helpstuff event envelopes. Steve Andrews, who drives a Series Land Roverwith a Corvette engine, entertains us under the stars with hisstrumming and singing talents into the wee hours. Walter cooks ussome late-night Dutch oven pork chops. We have much fun.

In the morning my head is feeling thick, and I could use a strongcuppa and a shower. Okay, scratch that, there are no showers.

The sun is shining and it’s starting to heat up. Lots of people arestarting to roll in now – in all, 305 Land Rovers attending and600-700 people this year. Around the Philly Rovers area Suzanna andIvan Via arrive in their Discovery I (hers) and Range Rover Classic(his), Jeff Bangs with his lovely wife Jennifer and baby daughter Abbi,Will ‘The Rover Whisperer’ Tillery, Jason Johnson (thank you for theuse of your camp shower!), Allysa Brown in her 2005 Range Rover, and quite a few others are setting up camp. I am introduced to GarrettPorterfield and JB McClure. Oh, are they total comedians! Beprepared to have some sore ribs and cheeks when you are aroundthese two.

Zak Ruck’s white P38 is sitting on the grass with its bonnet open,a lone and innocent victim. The ‘bandana gang’ decides to takeadvantage of this opportunity. Poor Zak. Dan pulls the fuel pump fusefrom Zak’s truck, and then we all just sat back and wait. When Zakreturns his truck starts up…for a minute, then stalls out. Hmmm, what could be wrong? Being the nice guys that they are, the gang goesover to help ol’ Zak out - examining the engine, and giving extendedtheories on what could possibly be wrong. I learn my first MARlesson – never leave your truck unattended.

Now one of MAR’s real LR super heroes is Will Tillery. Word onthe street has it that he can appear out of thin air in a Rover’s time ofneed. Sure enough, I spot him under someone’s Range Rover. He laid his magic hands on many grateful trucks this year, but heneeds a cape.

I should go no further without mentioning the weather. Yes, thetradition has been broken, as MAR 2007 was a completely hot, sweaty, dry, dust bowl this year, and the more people drove around(thanks to those considerate folks showing their ‘cool’ factor by thecamping areas by the way), the worse it got. You could barely see, letalone breathe through the huge fog of dust. Everyone had a nice coatof orangey brown dust from head to toe and in every crevice of ourtrucks - we are all looking and feeling just lovely. Wow, maybe Ishould have packed a dust mask instead of the extra umbrella.

Trails were easier this year, I’m told, because of the unusualdryness. After going on most every trail, I can clearly envision howmessy some areas would become by adding some wet, slippery mudto the equation. They were still a lot of fun to drive though, and a fewchallenging spots along the way. It’s rumored that mine was the firstLR3 to ever attempt Goat Hill. It’s pretty steep, and there’s one areawhere the trees get super tight. It took several attempts to squeeze myfat truck through, and only cleared by a couple millimeters. I can’timagine trying to go through that spot when it’s wet – reckon there’dbe a bit of damage done right about there.

I didn’t leave MAR without a little carnage though; ripped theplastic rear bumper cover nearly off – twice. The bumper caught thebank dropping in to the same mud hole on West River both Thursdayand Friday night. Nothing major, thank goodness, but when you hearthe horrid ripping sound as those bits come off, it sounds so muchworse. Everyone making those ‘Whoa!’ and ‘Ouch!’ noises doesn’thelp either.

On Thursday night I let Mike Noe, who owns a beautifulblue Series II, try out a ‘modern day’ Land Rover. As a seasonedoff-roader, he did fantastic, once he figured out that ‘D’ was ‘Drive’.Allysa let Steve drive her 2005 Range Rover for a while as well. It’s funto see these gents behind the wheels of our trucks. They drive socareful ha-ha. It is also nice to have some girls to wheel with - Suz andAllysa, rock on.

Friday morning, I drove up to the main rally area to check outthe vendors. On Friday night, we got to enjoy the best barbequed ribsthis side of the Mason Dixon Line, grilled to perfection by thegourmet extraordinaire, Sean Roche, along with some prize winningrum cake baked by JB’s mom. Man, lots of good eating under thistent. Later, some of us went on a night run, and Mike was kind(brave) enough to return the favor and let me drive his Series II,while Dan drove my LR3 around a bit. What an awesome truck, it isamazing to feel the differences in these beasts at opposite ends of thespectrum. One day maybe I’ll have a Series too, baby blue please.

Unfortunately, we had to leave after the Friday night run due to aprior commitment and missed out on Saturday’s events. They hadn’teven brought out the blow-up animals yet, although I hear that indeedthey did! Luckily no word on the urinal cakes either, surely just nastygossip. What a great time it was, with equally great people. Other thansome shower facilities, and maybe a little rain, I couldn’t ask for abetter way to spend a weekend. So when is MAR 2008 again?

[How do Land Rover enthusiasts get started? We asked that veryquestion of Tami Sutherland. Here’s her response –ed.”]“I am an internet software developer and run a small business out ofmy home in Grottoes, VA. However, I grew up in Napoleon, MI, asmall farming community. As the saying goes, you can take the girl outof the country but you can’t take the country out of the girl. I escapeto nature whenever I can.

“I love to travel and my business allots me the freedom to do so,so I take advantage of that often. Road trips are my favorite. I enjoy avariety of outdoor recreation: wheeling (of course), gardening, camping, hiking, canoeing, swimming, biking; anything that gets meaway from concrete and into God’s country.”

“I had a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the transfer case failedat 150,000 miles, right after the payments ended. I wasn’t planning ona Land Rover. I test drove it at Dimitt Land Rover in Clearwater, FL. Itest drove it and I took it home. Then I wondered, “What have Idone?” I didn’t even haggle over the price. People warned me not togo alone. I bought the ’05 in 2006 with 13,000 miles. I’ve had noissues with major components.”

“As of now my Java Black LR3 SE now sports Nitto Terra Grapplertires, a Superwinch EP9.0 and custom bumper, Hella 4000 drivinglamps and a G4 raised air intake. Oh yes, I also have a pink air tankmounted in the rear of the truck. The color is right for me and thetank lets me deflate and inflate tires without worry.”

“I’ll never own anything else but I would love a Series Rover oneday. I like to tinker on cars. I was in auto mechanics in high schoolbut engines have changed a lot since then.”

“I’m part chicken and part daredevil, if that makes any sense.I’m kind of shy and get unsure of myself when faced with a newchallenge. But I push myself and don’t let my fears get in the way of

trying something new, I just close my eyes and leap in with both feet. That’s how it was with my LR3.”

“When I bought it in Florida I had no plans to take it very far offthe pavement. It was to be your typical grocery getter and used forroad trips. Then I got to know some of the Land Rover folks – need Isay more? Ha-ha! They encouraged me to take it off-road saying, ‘TheLR3 is quite capable in stock form, maybe get some better tires’. Atfirst I was like yeah right, I don’t think so, but the next thing youknow, I buy some tires and the addiction begins.”

“I’ll never forget the maiden voyage to the swamp. It was at theJ.W. Corbett Nature Preserve in the Florida Everglades. I pleadedmy friend Tamy to come with me and we roll up to all these heavilymodified rigs in my shiny new LR3. The people were very friendly andwelcoming, but we couldn’t help feeling a tad out of place. It was adouble whammy; we were women and we were in an LR3. Had thatfight or flight moment, but gave it a go.”

“As my head’s spinning going down the trails, trying to figure outwhat to do with all these gadgets like terrain response control, hilldescent control, stability control, somebody says over the CB, ‘Okwe’re coming to our first mud hole. Get ready to winch out the Tami’sin the LR3.’ Panic strikes and all eyes are watching. Well, I went alittle too fast and sploosh, a wave of water comes up over the hood,up over the roof, but then out we come, successfully, on the otherside. Hoots & hollers everywhere! My truck got the nickname RubberDucky that day.”

“I’ve traveled to the SCARR [South Central Area Rover Rally,Texas Land Rover Club] and hope to make it to northeastern eventsthis year.”

Employee Profile:A Look at Dirk Parkins

By Mike Koch

When a Land Rover enthusiast dedicates over twenty years of his lifeto working at Rovers North, it’s only proper to explore his first LandRover experience and move forward from there.

After growing up outside of Philadelphia, Dirk moved tosouthern Vermont to learn how to work with draft horses. Followingthat, he moved to the Adirondacks of New York to log with horses. But before long, it was back to Vermont for Dirk when his previousemployers moved north to Fairfax, where they bought a sugar bushthat Dirk logged for them. Fairfax is the next town north of Westford. To this day, neither town possesses a single traffic light; they’re on therural side. His employers in Fairfax drove a 109” station wagon, which they bought from Mark Letorney. Dirk admired the Rover andsaid to himself: “That’s a great vehicle that’s meant to be worked on.I’ve got to get a Land Rover!” He contacted Mark and got word of a1970 88” that was for sale from a local who had done some weldingfor Mark. It was the summer of 1984 when Dirk acquired and rebuilthis first Land Rover. “I wanted to learn how to work on it and inexchange for doing some stuff around here, Mark taught me how towork on a Land Rover and the rest is history.” Unintentionally, herolled the 88”, but naturally rebuilt it. Since his first day of employ-ment at Rovers North in December of 1984, Dirk has held an assort-ment of positions including: turning a wrench, boxing parts in theshipping department, answering the phones in sales, and working inthe receiving department also. Currently, Dirk is Parts Manager, “try-ing to maintain a constant flow of parts from the UK through ourdoors.” When he’s not busy at Rovers North, Dirk is very active withhis wonderful family.

A 1967 IIA 109” military was Dirk’s second Rover, whichhappens to be his favorite Land Rover because “ it was built to thehighest standards and simplest to work on.” Dirk’s next project wasto rebuild a 1968 IIA that he gave to a friend as a wedding present.

Wearing a smile, he told me that he ended up owning that one twice.Presently, Dirk drives a 109”/110 hybrid (also rebuilt, rolled, andrebuilt), which he mainly uses as a vacation vehicle when he’s notusing it in the woods near his home in Norwich, Vermont.

After asking around the office for a good Dirk story, I cameacross this rather riveting one. Back in 1985, Rovers North wasimporting brand new Range Rovers before they were available forsale in North America. The Range Rovers were shipped from the UK,across the North Atlantic, in 40’ containers. Once the containersreached Westford on the back of a truck, the Rovers were backeddown a pair of ramps and into our parking lot, which was veryconfined at the time. Mark was cautiously backing a shiny new RangeRover down the set of ramps when suddenly one ramp snapped.Immediately, the axles of the Range Rover articulated to match theprecarious angle, as they were designed to perform. Unable to exitthe vehicle, because of the consequences of it rolling over, Mark wastrapped in the Range Rover. Bear in mind that there was aU.S. Customs agent overseeing this circus. Dirk disappearedmomentarily but returned in an instant, chainsaw screamingas he quickly cut pieces of lumber to stack up under the crackedramp. Mark and the Range Rover backed down on to terrafirma without harm.To summarize, I asked Dirk the following:How have Land Rovers influenced your life:“They’re the most consistent part for twenty plus years now.”

That’s a significant amount of Land Rover experience and surelythe reason he’s had the answer to every esoteric Series tech questionI’ve asked him in the five years that we’ve worked together.

Place the trimmed old mud flap in front of the toe box. Notice how itnicely fits into this space with its edge fitting into the stepped edge of theflexible eyebrow. Mark on the mud flap the location of the 2 self-tappingscrews that secure the inner wheel well near the top of the cut out area.An easy way to do this is to dab paint, or white out on to the screw headsand press the mud flap into position. Then with a hole punch or drill, put2 holes into the mud flap were it is marked by the paint.

Screw the mud flap into place. Ideally, the factory self-tapping screws andwashers are replaced with stainless steel screws and large stainlessfender washers, as shown.

Living in Vermont, we experience one of the most corrosiveenvironments in the country. Harsh winters mean tons of road saltand with more dirt roads than paved roads, our Land Rovers receivea good abrasive blast of gravel to enhance the salt’s penetration. It isdocumented that salt will increase the rate of corrosion by a factor of900 times the normal rate. Unfortunately, it does not end with winter. To combat the loss of road surface from dust, estimated at over 2.5inches on average per year, towns liberally apply highly corrosiveliquid chloride to their dirt roads to ensure you will continue rustingright on through the summer.

In this never-ending fight against corrosion, front mud flaps playa key role protecting the underbody and chassis of our Land Rovers.Because they literally take a beating and are often saddled withbuilt-up ice and snow, their life span is generally limited to about 3years before they begin to crack along their flex line. Unlike mostfailed parts, a broken mud flap can be assigned a new, and vital rolein the underside protection of your Land Rover.

_______ ! ________

Torn front mud flap is replaced with a new one, and is cut square belowits metal bracket.

Planned Obsolescence? Defender inner wheel well is galvanized steel andoffers a high level of corrosion protection except for the area left open infront of the toe box. This was not always the case. Early Land Rover 90and 110 wheel wells were built to protect the steel toe box and doorpostarea from debris and corrosion. Only Land Rover can explain why it wascut out on later Defenders to expose this vulnerable area.

Oh the weather outside is frightfulBut my Rover’s so delightfulWhen other cars won’t goLet it snow, let it snow, let it snow

Oh, boy, it’s the beginning of Decemberand this island has received its firstsubstantial, it’s-going-to-stick snowstorm. The snow fell so hard and thick that the ferryservice had to shut down when the radarsystems couldn’t penetrate the snowfall. Thenthe winds picked up, the seas rose, and theferry cancelled out for another day.

Doom and gloom? Hardly! As a kid, Iwould have grabbed my Flexible Flyer andheaded for a hill or slope. Now, I grab one ofthe Series II-A’s and head for any unplowedroad or trail.

There’s something special about ridingaround in the snow. You do need to becareful that the several inches or feet of snowdon’t hide something substantial, like a ditch, boulder or log, but all that does is force youto slow down – never a bad idea. It iscomforting to remember that very cold airholds little moisture; that means it will rarelybe bone-chilling cold when it is snowingheavily outside. That’s even better news forme; I never did get around to swapping outthe canvas top for the safari top on the QE I,my ’66 II-A.

I bundled up and stepped outside intothe snowstorm. With the snow falling heavilyand steadily, the local snowplows hadremained in the garage pending a let up in thestorm. That meant that I had most of the localroads to myself. Since I caretake somesummer properties here, it gave me a perfectexcuse to run through the 12- 15 inches ofsnow that had fallen on unplowed trails indifferent parts of the island. With the RoversNorth Mansfield heater in the car, and a nicenew Rovers North canvas top, I was fairlysnug and warm inside the car. The Lucaswipers on a II-A operate with minds of theirown, totally unsynchronized. They also sweepacross a tiny part of the windshield at aleisurely pace. Much snow can accumulatebefore the wiper makes its next pass. Every sooften, you need to just stop and remove somebuilt up snow off the windshield.

Last September I purchased a set of B FGoodrich All Terrain M+S tires and this stormprovided their first test in the snow. They haveaggressive treads which make them a bitnoisy on paved roads but helpful in mud andsnow. It was well worth the considerable cost;the Rover pushed through the snow and driftsnicely. When a steep incline or side angleforced some slippage, shifting down into lowrange did the trick.

After an hour or so, more trucks

appeared on the roads so I decided to dosomething useful and secure more firewood. As the snow fell, I loaded up the rear of the88” with split logs. There’s no doubt that afully laden 88” has even better traction thanan unloaded one. It almost made me want toleave the wood in the car!

Running in the snow is not that hard onthe Rover. You do have to be careful of hiddenobstacles, as you might during a watercrossing, but there’s nothing abrasive againstswivel balls or seals like when you’re runningthrough mud. You do have to make certainthat you don’t get a lot of ice packed aroundthe wheels or brakes, but it’s unlikely todamage anything.

Driving around during the stormreminded me of the numerous travels I’vemade in my II-A during significant storms.Flying into Boston from Nashville at midnight,I discovered the reason for our flight’s longdelay; New England was buried in snow. Iquickly found that the snowplows had not yetstarted their work. The snow came down sothickly that it was difficult to see the highwaysand roads. You could barely exceed 40 mphfor the trip; add an extra two hours for thedrive. The II-A never missed a beat.

On another morning, I left Gorham, NHfor a job in Augusta, ME. The normal 2 !hour drive stretched out as the roads proved

BEHIND THE STEERING WHEELBy Jeffrey B. Aronson

53

quite snowy and slick. The Rover, in 4 wheelhigh range for the entire trip, got me theresafely. Of course, when I arrived in Augusta, the entire city was shut down. Another time, Idrove nearly 4 hours to give a talk in Eastport,ME. That night, a major storm dumped a lotof snow on the ground. I was the guest in aB & B that morning, and the hostess madestrong hints to her husband that “maybe weshould put Jeff up tonight. It’s not safe todrive.” He looked out over his newspaper, saw my green Series II-A in his driveway andsaid, “Look what he’s driving. He’ll be fine.”So much for a free night’s stay. That drive tookone hour longer than usual because of thedeep snowfall.

Decades ago, VW ran a television ad thatshowed boots crunching down new fallensnow. You saw a door open and a man getinto an original Beetle. The voice-over asked“have you ever wondered how the man whodrives the snowplow, gets to the snowplow?”Well, now you know – a Land Rover.

In the New York Times, he wroteof finding an “ancient, patched up Barbourjacket.” The Beaufort model “spoke of dampdogs sleeping on tartan coat linings in theback of battered Land Rovers, of point topoints and Badminton Horse Trials, all thingsdear to an Englishman.” He pulled out hisold Barbour “with its oily texture, browncorduroy collar and brass zipper as strong asa railway line” and decided that “I will wearmy shabby Barbour the next time I goshopping on Sloane Street – but I think I’llleave the green wellies in the Land Rover.”

The Barbour coat, and its waxed-cottoncousins, requires some maintenance. It wasthe latest word in water repellency andwarmth some decades ago and has certainlybeen surpassed since then. As long as youmaintain it, it will always work, it will last andit will never become obsolete. As an iconicpiece of clothing it ranks with HunterWellingtons. Many Land Rover enthusiastsfind they gravitate to owning both items.

This connection came to mind as once

again the relentless production of goodsentices us to “improve” every successfulproduct. Marketers want to believe that all ofus live in breathless anticipation of the nextawesome product. They may be wrong.

If you’re a runner you have undoubtedlyexperienced the frustration of your favoritepair of running shoes being out of productionwhen you go for a replacement pair. Are youlistening to me, New Balance? Are you listen-ing to me, Land Rover?

There’s no denying that the Range RoverSport and the LR 3 have been hugelysuccessful for Land Rover in the US market.Along with the revamped LR 2 and the RangeRover, these models have propelled LandRover into sales record territory, but at whatcost? It’s unlikely that the Discovery Series Iowner, looking to replace his/her 5-speed,3.9 liter V-8, with a manual transmission, shade tree mechanic-friendly engine, andseparate chassis will find comfort in the newLand Rover selections. In fact, he’s out ofluck. The Range Rover Classic, Defender90/110, and Series Land Rover owners havealso been left in the dust. What replaces thosevehicles is…nothing.

That’s when the enthusiast has an optionnot available to most consumers. Land Roverrecognizes the unusually high connection itsowners make with their vehicles. Unlike mostmanufacturers, Land Rover actually supportsolder vehicles with an extensive partsnetwork. You can keep your classic LandRover operating as a daily driver, a work orrecreational vehicle.

In case you hadn’t noticed, there’s apresidential election coming up in 2008.Every possible form of media, fromnewspapers and television to web pages, textmessaging, podcasting and online events, hastried to get your attention. In 1964, LandRover provided a new medium, the 109”Station Wagon. Jaime Kitman, in a greatarticle in Automobile (November 1996),wrote of his father’s quixotic quest for theRepublican nomination for President. Jamiewas in second grade when his father,

newspaper columnist Marvin Kitman, put hisname into the New Hampshire primary.Looking for business support Kitman enlistedthe help of the Rover Motor Company, whichprovided him with a 109” SW. Rover officialsin New York said “We are surely proud tohave a Land Rover be the official vehicle fromwhich you will stand for office. It has beenused for varied purposes – honorable andotherwise – but never, to our knowledge, hasa candidate for office made use of its greatgo-anywhere features to carry his campaignto the people. Great good luck to you, sir.”

Land Rover and Kitman ran a print adextolling the virtues of a Land Rover as acampaign car. Quoting Kitman, that ad says“in my line of work, as a Republicanpresidential candidate, the campaign car is akey to success… what I like best about myLand Rover is that it goes anywhere. In NewHampshire, it took me right up to the skislopes, solving one of my most vexingproblems as a politician. I don’t like to shakehands. My Land Rover made it possiblefor me to park next to the ski tows andpersonally wave to 3,000 voters as they wentby – none the wiser. If you are planning to runfor President, or even Prime Minister, I wouldlike to call your attention to the virtues of theLand Rover as the perfect campaign vehicle.”

What Jaime Kitman remembers about thecar was that he got to play in the “way, wayback” of a “slow and rough riding vehicle.Optional Kodiak heater notwithstanding,I also remember it as quite chilly. But Iremember it mostly as deeply, undeniablycool. That’s why I spent the next 30 yearspestering my old man to buy one… if hehadn’t run for President, I might neverhave been introduced to Land Rovers, and Iwouldn’t have my current vehicle of choice, a1995 Defender 90 SW.”

So when a presidential aspirant contactsyou, ask him/her the marque of theircampaign car. It will tell you more about thecandidate than any platform statement orwebcast. Anyone with a Land Rover would getmy vote.

SIGHTINGSThe Sightings Editor has been very busy shovelingsnow, pulling out stuck cars with his Series II-A88”, splitting wood and banking foundations. That’s so he can lug the bundles of mail into thehouse to work on Sightings. They do make forgreat reading on a cold winter’s day.Let's kick into the new year with a reminder ofthe rules:

Rule # 1 - All Sightings receive recognitionand our appreciation, but not necessarily a mug.We reward only those Sightings that capturethe unique qualities of Land Rovers and theirowners, and display them in a distinctive way.

Rule #2 - If your Sighting does not reallysurprise you, it won't surprise us, either, and youwon't get a mug. We're delighted, but notsurprised, that Land Rovers appear in Britishtelevision programmes, British publications, films with British themes, and shows aboutAfrican safaris. You shouldn't be surprised, either, and should consider looking for otherways to get a coffee mug.

Rule #3 - At an ever-changing date beforepublication we close off the Sightings. If we'vementioned the Sighting in an earlier issue, wewon't mention it again. If you're new to thefamily of Land Rover enthusiasts, you may nothave seen your Sighting in an earlier issue.

Rule #4 - We're not outfitting your kitchen. If you qualify, please remember - one mug perSighting per issue.

Rule #5- Sightings that are Land Roverreferences in books go to our Literary LandRover editor for mention, but only when spacepermits.

Rule #6 - Psst... if we can't read you nameand address because of atrocious penmanship,we can't recognize your Sighting nor send you amug. Psst...E-mail submissions - remember wecan't send a mug by e-mail. Send us your realname and shipping address, too.

Rule #7 - Grudgingly, very grudgingly, theEditor admits he might make an error. Let meknow if you think you've been jobbed, but alldecisions of the Editor are final.

Perfectly timed for the Christmas seasonwas the inclusion of a tree ornament with a 109”SW pictured on it. James Dargan, Plymouth, MAnoted it in the Gumps catalogue and received twofor Christmas. When Tessco electronics wantedto answer the question “Where can SCADA go?”they let the sight of a 109” SW traveling alongsidea pipeline answer the question. Eric Allen,Burtchville, MI, saw the ad.

J Crew adheres to a certain look and stylefor its clothes and catalogues; Land Rovers fitthem well. The November catalogue features ared Series Rover, taken on the Isle of Skye.American firms do know how to appeal toAnglophiles in the US. Jeff Jambers, CorpusChristi, TX, Tim Silva, Quantico, VA, RobinMcKelvey, Kennett Square, PA and Paul Hai,Necomb, NY, all noted the use of the Land Rover.Rule #2 aside, we are surprised.

When Field and Stream magazine wanted toassure readers that its website had the most

informed opinions of hunting and fishing goods,it chose the front of a Defender 90 to signifyexpertise. Mike McNulty, Arcadia, FL andThomas Castalado, Lakewood, NY noted theinclusion.

Sports Illustrated includes ads on itswebsite for Rock Resorts which scrolls photos ofexotic locations. One includes a sand-coloredMilitary Lightweight carrying distinctly civilianpassengers – unless the British Army has nowadded bikinis to its official uniform styles. RobinMcKelvey, Kennett Square, PA, noted theSighting. Eric Sousa, Melrose, MA, spotted aDefender 130 Fire Engine at work onFoxnews.com. We’re assuming the work was inthe UK?

BraeVal makes sporting shirts, and ina simple ad in Shooting Sportsman magazine, displays a shirt, a passport and a key witha Green Oval keychain, notes BernardMcMahon, Washington, DC. Spicing up anarticle on English hunting clothing, Esquire’sBlack Book includes a Series I in the photospread, reports ChrisWhybrew, Phoenix, AZ. MikeBurwell, Dade City, FL, noted aDefender charging up a hillin a Globetrotter episode onmountain biking in Cyprus.

Land Rovers are familiarvehicles in Costa Rica; they wereonce assembled there inthe 1960’s and an aggressivedistributor keeps bringing inDefenders, Discoverys andRange Rovers. So it’s nota surprise that when the TicoTimes wrote a story onadventure tourism in Costa Rica, there’s a Defender 90 in onephoto. Gerald Snyder,Minnetrista, MN, sent in thearticle.

Delta Airlines wants you tovacation in Costa Rica, too,so they’ve included a partial shotof a Series Land Rover on theirwebsite promoting theirvacation packages. PaulHester, State College, PA, andBen Bailey, Portland, OR, cap-tured the Sighting for us. HansSalinger, Arlington, VA, notedthat the T. Jeffrey SafariCompany, advertising in SCI’sJournal of Big Game Hunting, includes the profile of a SeriesRover in their logo.

The trailer for the newmovie The Bucket List, abouttwo men fulfilling their dreamsin the last days of their lives, includes a Defender 90. “What away to go out,” noted spottersJosh and Marion Peklo,Davidson, NC. Douglas

Shepard, E. Sarasota, FL, was watching theDisney Channel film The Little Vampire with hisson, Chandler, who was the first to spot aDiscovery Series II in the movie.

In one of the least-expected Sightingsreceived, Gary Cook, Fort Wayne, IN, noted thatthe Louisville Ladder website features one ofits products on a Discovery Series II. Moreexpected was the use of Series Land Rovers atplay in Africa in a Ford “Lionman” commercial, notes Terry Immm, Winnipeg, Manitoba.Harbor Marketing in the UK wanted to bolster theimage of G H Bass, the one-time Maine footwearmanufacturer, in England so they used aDefender 110 in their British ads. John Crouse,Arvada, CO, sent us a copy of the ad. WatchingCSI-Miami one night, Ray Young, Romney WVwas dismayed that the Range Rover shown in thebeginning of the show was eliminated from theaction when it was set ablaze. Jim Salyers, Jr,King George, VA, spotted a Series 109” in anonline video clip from Iraq.

Sightings Winners:When the Army published winter safety

driving tips in Soldiers magazine, Eric Corbett,Missoula, MT and Naipo Robertson, El Paso,TX, noted the use of a Defender 90 SW in asnowstorm – complete with British plates. Maybethe Army Humvee would have gotten stuck? Rule# 2 aside, we are surprised again!

Rule #3 undoubtedly exasperates Sighters, but we always want to give credit to those whosubmit Sightings after publication deadlines. Weacknowledged that Beretta featured a Series LandRover in its recent catalogue. Ahmad Ijaz,Northport, AL, Shawn Palmer, Cumming, GA,and Rob Smith, Cascade, CO, sent in Sightingsafter deadline, Shawn Palmer, Dayton Wright,Jamestown, TN, Frank Sands, Katy, TX, andJohn Tackley, Chester, VA, all spotted the Texacoad featuring an Arizona Land Rover ClubDefender climbing a hill all sent their Sightingsafter publication of our November/Decemberissue.

We’ve awarded mugs for the Garmin adcampaign, the one featuring the Discovery, beforeand it’s nice to see that it has returned to the air.D. Aaron Conway, St. Louis Park, MO, DebraScialla [see Rule # 6], Eric Corbett, Missoula,MT and Henry McQueen, Lancaster, PA allspotted the rerun of the ad. Dennis Saltys, Kent,WA, and Steve Quigley, Flagstaff, AZ, noted thatAmerican Life Insurance was rerunning its adfeaturing a Series Land Rover.

Shawn Palmer, Cumming, GA, noted thatOrvis International Travel features a Series Roveron the cover of its brochure. Bill Smith, Arvada,CO, liked the South African Tourism ad on thebonnet of a Series Land Rover that ran in NationalGeographic. He particularly noted that theTourism Board chose an older Rover when newerDefenders are assembled in South Africa. KevinKernohan [see Rule #6] noted Land Roversat work in Gaza in the online edition of the UKnewspaper The Telegraph.
