design statement – groups of 2 – 5 minutes
design is the process of applying creative thinking in order to facilitate solutions that address human needs in various contexts…..
it is an expression of human intent

I will if you will
trend factors
societal trends
macro issues (climate change, ageing society, emerging economies)
shifts in cultural landscapes
behavioural change
media / education
technology enablers
state of the art
new potential opportunities
new patterns of adoption
enterprise trends
changing the value equation (social economy)
emerging revenue models
stakeholder ecosystems
why wouldn’t we?
solutions driven agenda = sense of responsibility
sustainability is not ‘a problem’ waiting for ‘a solution’
it is an environmental, cultural and political phenomenon
it requires us to re-shape the way we think
it is complicated
it requires collaboration and co-development
it requires a heavy dose of creativity
The stimulus for re-invention and for questioning the status quo has probably never been greater

hidden knowledge of everyday
aimto understand the environmental and social, impacts of everyday activities
activity1. consider everything you did today from waking up to arriving at college 5
mins to discuss2. select one of the activities you did this morning
– e.g. having a shower, making toast etc 3. draw a storyboard of the environmental impacts of your activity not only what
happened within your house but where all the products/materials etc came from and how they were made 30-40 mins to do this.
4. present their storyboard talking through all the different elements
timescale: 30 mins group size: Any number divided into small groups (max 6) requirements: A1 paper (or bigger preferably), and coloured marker pens

CO-CREATE???

where are the new spaces for design thinking?
• can we democratise design?• what is the role of designer?• is there a role for a designer?• is it about reducing consumption?• is it about finding a deeper logic of
consumption? • is it facilitating evolutionary and
emergent solutions? • what is the role of the consumer?• can design be comprehensive, holistic,
inclusive, reflective, considered………?
