Letter to Our Readers Having the Atlantic Ocean as an eastern border provides many assets. Not only plenty of beaches for fun and relaxation, it offers an abundance of nutritious gastronomic pleasures: seafood, shellfish, etc. In this month’s main editorial feature, our writers delve into the topic of local Jersey Fresh Seafood available to our residents and visiting tourists, as well as venues where these delicious meals can be enjoyed. Hope you find it as interesting as I did. In seeking a dining venue, what is it you favor: A neighborhood bar, a family-oriented eatery or a favorite place to watch a game and enjoy a libation? An establishment that meets all these criteria is Donovan’s Bar & Grill in Manchester. Take a quick read in this month’s Restaurant Profile, then, if you’re in the area, stop by and visit. On the entertainment side, whether you’re looking for a dance band, a wedding band or just a musical group to relax and listen to, the Phil Engel Band offers all that you seek. This talented group performs at many local venues in the Central NJ area and is definitely worth checking out. Read more in this issue’s Band Profile. A working mom with two young daughters, a bartender with personality and a desire to seek a degree in education. Rolled all onto one, meet Kristy Kube, our Mixologist-of-the-Month. If passing through or visiting the Brick area, drop in to Tommy’s Coal Fired Pizza and say “Hi” to Kristy. She’ll greet you with a big, friendly smile. On the humor side and for a change of pace in comedy, our Comedy Relief feature this month introduces you to Kate Hendricks (a.k.a.“Kate the Wasp”). She is the star of her own web series of the same a.k.a. name and a review of her videos will keep you in stitches for hours. Once again, I hope you find all our monthly offerings and timely information in each and every issue of Venues NJ to be helpful in planning and scheduling your leisure activities.

Call it a neighborhood bar. Call it a family-oriented eatery. Call it a place to watch your favorite game on TV and have a refreshing libation. Or, to simplify things, just call it Donovan’s Bar & Grill.
This popular bar and grill located in Manchester, offers hearty food, friendly service, casual dining and a cozy atmosphere that welcomes its patrons. In fact, its motto, “A Friendly Place to Meet and Eat,” really says it all.
Happy Hour specials and daily drink, beer and appetizer specials are on tap every day of the week from 3:00 to 6:00 pm. This cozy dinner or cocktail getaway offers casual dining seven days a week and also offers patrons fun specialty nights, such as Trivia Tuesdays with a DJ and prizes, and TV Trivia seven-nights-a-week at the bar.
Patrons are greeted by a friendly staff that owner George Vasilakis says has been with him for years, some, since the restaurant opened 10 years ago. Staff longevity speaks volumes and many of the bartenders and servers here are familiar with many of the customers and have established wonderful relationships with their regulars.
As Vasilakis says, this truly is a neighborhood bar and grill.
Find a seat in the bar area which features high-top tables and high top booths, as well as the 20, 50-inch HDTVs. The dining area in the cozy eatery offers table and chairs and upholstered booths to dine in comfortably.
Quite a bit of renovation took place when Vasilakis
and his then partner, Brian Brindisi created Donovan’s 10 years ago, which included adding more seating, putting in new restrooms, new flooring and new tables and chairs, among other improvements.
Appetizers like juicy Steak Bites, made from pure Angus beef and served up with Texas Petal Sauce, which the owner says, “is sauce with a kick,” or Buffalo Wings, are just a couple of the tasty appetizer selections.
Seafood is also available here. Dine on mussels, clams and lobster tails, all cooked up fresh by Chef Rinaldo, who is currently in the process of creating a new menu for Donovan’s. Chef Rinaldo, who has been with Donovan’s for years, creates new specialty dishes weekly that diners won’t find on the menu, lending a bit of a surprise for each day’s fare. Dishes such as, Cowboy Steak, or Jack Daniels Steak, or Chilean Sea Bass, (with sautéed spinach) or Lobster Tails are only a small sampling of the surprise cuisine. Chef Rinaldo has also been known to prepare a Rockfish dish, which Vasilakis says is, “superb and phenomenal.”
In addition to surprise dishes, Donovan’s keeps its guests satiated by offering a number of regular dishes, such as the Bet You Can’t Burger, which features two 8-ounce burgers on a roll with onions, mushrooms, cheese and BBQ sauce, served up with French fries and cole slaw. “Anyone who finishes it gets a 12-ounce mug of beer of their choice,” Vasilakis said, adding that there are many
who take the challenge and actually do finish the burger. Specialties at Donovan’s include the Early Bird Special, which is offered much of the day, beginning at 11:00 am and going through until 5:00 pm and features over 25 items to choose from. The special offers a complete dinner with dessert all for $10.99, every day, except on holidays. Other treats during the Early Bird Special include a glass of house wine or a 12-ounce mug of Coors or Coors Light for $1.25.
Currently, Donovan’s has “Tuesday Night Trivia” and “Tap” Trivia every night, an interactive, digital out-of-home entertainment experience for bars, restaurants, clubs, according to Vasilakis, who says that it is extremely popular with his customers and packs the bar. A number of new popular specialty nights, such as Ladies’ Night and Karaoke Night will be introduced soon.
Desserts include a scrumptious, yummy homemade cheesecake. And Donovan’s appreciates and welcomes young diners as well, offering a Kid’s Menu. Little ones can enjoy their favorite meals such as hamburgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese and chicken fingers.
Whether it’s a family dinner, an evening of cocktails and convivial conversation with friends, a late night drink and appetizer with some entertainment, Donovan’s Bar & Grill has just what you need to satisfy and complete your outing.

barbeque bashes is complete without a
proper soundtrack.
That’s where the Phil Engel Band comes
in. Ready and willing to play any event, the
group is a dance band that has been playing
many various events around central New
Jersey for the past five years. Phil Engel
originally started out as an acoustical solo
act in 2006 and was asked by his current
drummer and former bass player if he
was interested in starting a full band after
they saw him play at a restaurant. A little
skeptical at first, Engel gave it a shot and
immediately liked the result. He is now
accompanied by Gary Conte on lead guitar
and backing vocals, Greg Felise on bass
and backing vocals, Craig Amsterdam on
keyboard and K Bo on drums.
You can even hire them to play your
personal backyard party in order to give
your bash a little more flair than someone’s
iPod pumping through speakers. “I really
like backyard events; they’re a lot of fun
because you have so many different people
that come to these,” said Engel. “It’s
different when you’re in a bar or a club
because a lot of people who go to the bar
are drinking or watching TV. When you’re
hired for a backyard party people tend to
pay a lot more attention to you and they
interact more because it’s not often you see
a band at a backyard party.”
The Phil Engel Band typically does one
private event a month, though the summer
offers a lot more opportunities and that
number rises with the warmer months. It
has three weddings booked for June and
last month did a dog show for the second
anniversary celebration of The Green Leaf
Pet Resort & Hotel in Millstone Township
-- an event that really proves the Phil Engel
Band can cover any event imaginable.
Trying to appease a large number of people
at a numerous variety of events does have
its challenges, namely trying to stay on top
of what’s popular as new hit songs are
coming to the forefront almost daily. The
turnaround on popular songs is quick so
it does take effort to stay on top of the
music scene today compared to just a
few years ago. “I feel like it’s a faster
pace now than it ever was,” says Engel of
the amount of hit songs being produced
today. “The challenge is trying to hit every
genre and learn all the new stuff before it
does go out, and then you have to learn the
new stuff all over again.”
Aside from private events, the band
makes the rounds at local bars with some
of its more frequent stops being Moore’s
Tavern & Sports Bar in Freehold, Rella’s
Italian Tavern in Brielle and Baker’s
Water Street Bar and Grille in Toms River.
Although the full band is featured the
majority of the time, the guys occasionally
work as a duo or trio act if the event calls for
it. But, says Engel, their calling is as a dance
band. “That’s really what’s on the radio
today, it’s dance music,” he states. “We try
to portray ourselves more as a dance band
because
the more people
dance, the more it goes hand in hand with
having fun.” So to get moving whether
you’re celebrating or just enjoying a night
out, be sure to check out the Phil Engel
Band.

Kristy Kubeby CLARE MARIE CELANO
Bartender Kristy Kube was working on a degree in education and just happened to fall into a job as a server that eventually turned into a job as a bartender.
Kube plans to return to school to complete her studies as an elementary school teacher, but said she is glad she took the opportunity to work as a bartender, which pays her a good income and allows her to be around people who are happy, relaxed and having a good time.
This bartender, who spends her days working at Tommy’s Coal Fired Pizza, in Brick, has two little girls who are her priority; and the job gives her the flexibility to work when she wants and still manage to care for her two daughters.
Kube also has experience working as a nanny and has worked in a day care center as a pre-school teacher. Working as a preschool teacher at Kiddie Academy also allowed her to bring her daughter to work with her, which was one of the reasons she said she took the job.
Kristy says she loved working in child care and teaching, but bartending is working out much better right now for her.
Starting as a server, Kube quickly moved to bartender, learning her craft on the job. She’s honed her skills after three years at Tommy’s Coal Fire Pizza and says she enjoys bartending more than serving. “There’s a new story every day at my job. Everyone I meet has a story,” Kube says of her experience at the bar/restaurant. “My job is always exciting.”
In addition to her other duties as mom of two girls, she makes sure she attends all her daughter’s soccer games. And when there is a bit of spare time, she is able to indulge in her love of sports by watching baseball or football games on TV or attending games with her dad. Kristy is a devoted Mets fan.
She relates she is looking forward to summer when she will have a chance to indulge in another favorite pastime -- going to the beach regularly with her children.
Leisurely days at the beach with her children, she says, are indeed something to be happy about and worth waiting for!

Jersey Fresh Seafood
And other states are devouring our seafood too. Most of the harvest of Fishermen’s Dock Cooperative in Point Pleasant Beach is sold to wholesale markets in the Mid-Atlantic States and Southern New England. Since the early 1950s, this co-op, one of two active fishing cooperatives in New Jersey, is an integral part of the waterfront community of Point Pleasant Beach. In fact, many of its members are sons of the original founders. Several are third or fourth generation commercial fishermen. According to the co-op’s website, “They are all participants in what is called a mixed-trawl fishery, their fishing activities dictated by the migratory patterns of the fish through the Bight and the vagaries of the fresh fish market. They primarily target fluke, silver hake and squid but in the past have also had significant landings of winter flounder, bluefish, monkfish and scallops.” The other co-operative, Lund’s Fisheries Inc., in Cape May, catches a wide variety of both finfish and shellfish, from the well known like bluefish, sea scallops, black sea bass, summer flounder, mackerel and herring, to the
lesser known butterfish, Atlantic croaker and ilex squid. In a 2012 report, “Opportunities and Potential for Aquaculture in New Jersey,” the New Jersey Department of Agriculture cites that our $6 million aquaculture shellfish industry - a small part of the $178 million state seafood industry - has the potential to grow much bigger. The Garden State Seafood Association has recognized the region of Cape May and Wildwoods as the second strongest commercial fishing port on the Eastern seaboard, and it ranks seventh in the nation in dollars generated in 2010 (about $81 million), harvesting approximately 43 million pounds of finfish and shellfish. For the entire state, we netted approximately 162 million pounds of finfish/shellfish tallying nearly $180 million. All this done without overfishing (depleting) species. A relatively new way of supplying seafood is called aquaculture, which basically means “farming,” and thus helping support the natural process of propagation; it also supplements the natural, wild-caught harvest.
Having the Atlantic Ocean as a large border is certainly an asset. Not only does it provide beaches for fun and relaxation, but it serves up nutritious gastronomic pleasures (that is, if you aren’t a vegetarian or vegan). As we are also blessed with an abundance of restaurants that
proudly use local fresh ingredients, you can find quite a bit of home-harvested seafood on local menus. Yet we are not the only state to chow down on our ocean bounties. According to a state report found on jerseyseafood.nj.gov, over 100 different species of finfish and shellfish were harvested in the Garden State. “Local product is shipped to some of the most discerning seafood markets in the world. New Jersey monkfish are on display at wholesale markets in Seoul, South Korea. New Jersey tuna is sliced in sushi bars in Tokyo. New Jersey squid is served in tapas restaurants in Madrid.”

In 1997, New Jersey passed a law called the New Jersey Aquaculture Development Act to help satisfy increased demand for our natural ocean food resources. Hard clams were the first focus, and according to reporter Jacqueline L. Urgo of The Philadelphia Inquirer (1-3-2012), in 2011, hard clams were two-thirds of total New Jersey aquaculture sales; the Garden State rose to fifth ranking in harvest of hard clams. They are cultivated and harvested, starting as “seeds” in two-acre plots that are leased from the state, and are located throughout our entire seaboard. Urgo writes, “According to a recent survey conducted by the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, over 30 aquaculture operations in New Jersey currently employ approximately 90 full time and 81 part-time employees. Total farm-gate sales value of reported harvest was approximately $5,787,000. Applying a standard fisheries multiplier of six, the economic contribution of aquaculture to New Jersey is approximately $35 million annually.” The state is targeting further species for aquaculture, including soft-shell clams, crabs and bay scallops. Oysters, meanwhile, have
made a strong comeback, according to reporter Spencer Kent of the South Jersey Times (4-10-2014). Describing a recent forum that took place in Port Norris, experts proudly asserted that New Jersey’s southern bayshore oyster population is healthy and oyster harvesters are profiting. A significant decline in the oyster population was blamed on years of excessive rains from hurricanes and other storms, which decimated oyster beds, up to 80% in the Delaware Bay. Prior to that was another devastation -- parasites, which destroyed vulnerable oysters in the 1980s and again in the 1990s. Kent writes, “In an effort to repopulate oyster beds, with funding provided by the Nature Conservancy and the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary, the state DEP oversaw the planting of more than 150,000 baskets of clam shells in the lower bay, near Cape May County.” Lobsters are also a New Jersey specialty; (who needs Maine to enjoy these crustaceans?). The Specialty Food Association (in 2010) reported that New Jersey’s lobster industry produces nearly 700,000-lbs. annually, representing about 2% of the national catch. There are 110 state commercial lobster-fishing

licenses, but only 51 are active. An interesting profile by Mike Newall of the Philadelphia Inquirer (8- 09, 2010) gave readers a glimpse into the day of the life of a local lobsterman and his operations. Joe Horvath and his son Adam work on their 40-foot Downeaster that sets sail off the Shark River for about 10 miles into the Atlantic, into a lobster-rich area called Mud Hole. They drop heavy, baited traps, which Newall writes, weigh about 40 pounds each, and do about 400 or so per journey. This team owns and operates about 2,500 pots and they keep about 500 pounds of lobster from a typical run; pots hoisted back up often contain other animals as well as lobsters that do not measure up. According to the state, the total New Jersey lobster catch has increased and is now up to approximately 600,000 pounds.Meanwhile, of course, there are many other delicious ocean-dwellers: blue crab, fluke, striped bass, tilefish, and herring. And -- we don’t need solely (pun intended) to rely on our commercial operations; residents are allowed and often encouraged to “go fish” for themselves. Fishing, crabbing and clamming can be done, just check for any rules and regulations.

Kate Hendricks
I recently spoke with one of
our previous interviewees, S e l e n a C o p p a c k , and she
suggested I do a little research on a new, up-and-coming female comic, Kate Hendricks. Well, I did and I loved her! Kate is the star of her own web series, “Kate the Wasp,” and it’s hysterical. Since no one reads this for my ramblings, let’s get to Kate.
Venues-NJ: Kate, I just watched a bunch of your videos and can’t stop laughing. I love subtle sarcasm. Your video series, “Kate the Wasp” is hysterical. I know that if I tried that I’d come off as either mean or condescending -- but you come across as really interested and concerned. You’ve used the word “entitled,” but I see it as nicer than that. Maybe “naive entitled?”
Kate Hendricks: I started as a stand-up in 2009, and in 2012 started doing the web series, which -- because of the internet -- has helped me get material out there in a way that doing live stand-up does not. I appreciate your take on the character, as that is definitely how I intend it: interested, concerned and above all, poking fun at the idea/behavior of a clueless white woman.
V-NJ: You said you’re from Jersey. Where were you born and where’d you grow up?
KH: I am from NJ. I was born at Morristown Memorial, and we lived in Madison for most of my childhood, with some years in London.
V-NJ: This one seems like a no brainer, London? How’d that come about and how
do you think it influenced your comedy?
KH: We lived in London when I was aged four to nine due to my mom being transferred for work. I actually don’t
think it influenced me given I was so young.
V-NJ: Were you the family entertainment growing up? How about in high school, class clown?
KH: I’m not sure if I was the family entertainment, as all of my family is very quick and witty. I am a middle child, which I think carries its own stereotypes. I always joke that I’m a sufferer of middle child syndrome -- “desperate to please, anxious for love.”
V-NJ: I’ve been reading a lot of your stuff. Sorry for that word but it’s a lot of everything; Tumbler,” Kate the Wasp,” HuffPost. I naturally have to ask, how’s the sitcom/book/screenplay coming along? I figure you must
have at least one of those in the works.
KH: I have no problem with calling it my “stuff!” “Material” works too, or as I fondly describe it, my “nonsense.” So, like any stand-up/writer, I do have an idea for a sitcom and was able to pitch it during
the New York Television Festival initiative at the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal. In addition, I am pitching the “Kate the Wasp” character as a show.
V-NJ: How did you make the jump from being funny for fun to being funny for money? Who pushed you, if anyone?
KH: So, I am not yet making a living off of comedy. I get paid on occasion, but it’s not enough to live. I have a day job that keeps me grounded and structured, and I’m free to perform on the nights and weekends. I work as an assistant, and the company knows I have outside passions but isn’t either encouraging or discouraging. I try to keep the two separate. I would say I pushed myself: I always had an interest in being creative but I’d never really thought to go after a career in the arts in any meaningful way. I didn’t know anyone who had, or how to approach it. Now I see it’s like anything else: start doing it, meet other people who share your interests, and keep seeking out opportunities -- or making them for yourself.
For all of you reading this interview, be one of the first to tell everyone else that you knew her before she was famous. Just enter “Kate the Wasp” into the search engine and you will laugh for hours. She’s also on Facebook, Tumbler, HuffPost, Twitter and anything else techno-funny.

Comic Relief
Sadly, Selena Coppack’s aBostonian and doesn’t understand that the only real teams to root for are in NY and NJ. I jest of course (kinda, sorta). Coppack has been performing stand up for eight years and her new book, The New Rules For Blondes, launches in April.
Were you “the funny one” growing up?
I come from a very funny home and my older sister Laurel is a comedian, too. So I wasn’t really ‘the funny one’ at home so much as Laurel and I spent a lot of time writing musicals in our bedrooms, choreographing strange dance numbers, and watching “Saturday Night Live” since age 7. I think that my parents and oldest sister Emily are super hilarious, too. But yes, I’ve always been a bit of a ham and really interested in comedy and performing.
Along those lines, did you do all the school productions? Where’d you grow up? Or rather, if you’re anything like me, where were you raised?
I grew up outside of Boston and I did all of the school plays growing up -- I absolutely loved performing and the excitement of rehearsing and being in shows. I did some professional theater in Boston (at the Boston Baked Theater--now gone) and in high school I became interested in singing, too. I went to college in upstate NY where I majored in English and didn’t do any of the plays on campus; but I was in the only co-ed a cappella group on campus (the Hamilton College Hamiltones) and the improv troupe. After school I moved to Chicago
to study improv comedy further and it was improv that really led me to standup. I did improv for years and eventually I just got sick of working with other people, which makes me sound like a total curmudgeon, I know.
Stand up is very tough. You have to be able to take rejection. How’d you handle your first bomb, unless you’re the one comic who’s never experienced that?
The rejection is definitely hard and it’s something that everyone -- even my comedy idols -- have experienced at some point. Early on I think that I wanted the audience to like me, which can be dangerous territory, especially for female comedians. You have to be confident and feel entitled to be up there with the microphone and that took me a while to figure out -- how to just own the stage and trust myself more. I think of standup as like training a dog -- if you get out there and you’re confident and in control, the audience is with you. But if you exude a sense of nervousness or you seem insecure, they’ll eat you alive. I’ve been doing standup for about eight years and even now sometimes I’ll have a show where I can sense that certain people in the audience aren’t completely on board with me and it makes me feel nervous, but I know to just plow through it and keep on going and eventually I’ll hit on a joke or reference that wins them over.
Is this a means to an end? “SNL”, sitcoms, head writer--what’s your goal?
I definitely don’t think of standup as a means to an end and I think that comedians who do are pretty miserable people. It has to be its own reward or else you’re crazy to do this thing. But as far as my goal, mine is pretty broad: I’d like for my comedy (performance, writing) to pay for my life. I don’t know exactly how that will shake out, but I’d like my job to be what I love to do, which is write and perform comedy. I have a book coming out in April (The New Rules for Blondes, from It Books/HarperCollins), which I hope will open up new opportunities for me. It’s a collection of humorous essays celebrating and subverting the blonde stereotype, but it’s for readers of all hair colors.

If you read last month’s issue of Venues NJ, you hopefully learned a bit more about NJ wines. Now that we’re discussing Seafood in this issue, let’s take a look at some suggestions for pairing wine selections with a seafood dinner.
“World Famous Garlic Crabs”

Try Our
Pairing Seafood with Wines
Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio
These are the aristocrats of white fish wines. Dry, austere and crisp, Chenin Blanc and Pinot Grigio the wines I reach for when I am serving lean, white fish cooked simply. Flounder, halibut, walleye, snapper, raw clams or oysters all do well with these wines. Alternately, you can use these wines to cut through the natural fat in some fish, such as striped bass, catfish, lobster, shrimp or mussels.
Chardonnay, Fume Blanc, Viognier, Pinot Gris
This is the realm of the fuller whites. Oaky Chardonnay gets a bad rap these days, but I love it with striped bass, crab, raw oysters -- even lobster. The theory here is to match a full-bodied wine with a full bodied dish. If you have a broth-based soup, such as she-crab soup, Chardonnay works wonderfully. If you have a fish that’s a little oilier, such as bluefish or mackerel, try Pinot Gris or Viognier.
Pinot Noir, Gamay, Sangiovese, Grenache
Basically this is the light red wine category. There are precious few instances where you’d want a big red with seafood, but light reds do quite well with salmon, tuna, marlin, swordfish, mackerel, bluefish or other fatty, meaty, big-flavored fish. I love a Chianti -- which is mostly Sangiovese -- with spaghetti and clam sauce or octopus stewed in tomato sauce. Be careful though: Avoidcombining reds with spicy seafood, as you will probably get a nasty metallic taste.
Roses and Other Blush wines
Kind of a ‘tweener of a wine.I will serve roses when the sauce is heavier than what I want for a white, but not quite right for a full-on red. Roses can substitute for full-bodied whites such as Chardonnay and Fume Blanc. I use them a lot in summer, too, when I am grilling swordfish or tuna steaks. Rose is also a good choice with a tomato-based seafood soup, such as cioppino or zuppa da pesce.

Two on the Aisle
O N B R O A D W A Y The band takes the last bow in “After Midnight,” the sparkling jazz revue that opened at the Brooks Atkinson Theater in November 2013. This may be unusual for Broadway, where the players are normally in the pit — and the music often sounds as if it could have been piped in from Hong Kong — but it’s entirely as it should be. I mean no disrespect to the superabundance of talented performers in this jubilant show when I say that they are all playing second fiddle, if you will, to the main attraction. This would be the 16 musicians called the Jazz at Lincoln Center All-Stars, stacked in a bandstand at the back of the stage for much of the evening, rollicking through the music of Duke Ellington and Harold Arlen and others with a verve that almost captivates the eye as much as it does the ear. “After Midnight” moves sleekly through more than 25 songs from the height of the jazz era. Ostensibly we are time-traveling back to the heyday of the Cotton Club, the Harlem nightclub where Ellington was the bandleader for a heady spell, and where many of the black jazz greats of the 1920s and 1930s performed.
A Review
“After Midnight” does not make much of an attempt to impart any of the Cotton Club history. Instead the focus remains squarely on music and its interpretation, by those amazing musicians, under the snappy baton of the conductor Daryl Waters, and the performers who sing, slide, scat, cartwheel and generally raise a ruckus in front of them. Ellington’s lyric-free but gorgeous “Creole Love Call” is delivered by Carmen Ruby Floyd with a hypnotic simplicity, her voice taking flight in tandem with the swooning melody, But for style, top marks go to Ms. Lenox, who seems to bring back the authentic spirit of the era with her sensationally funny performance of two lowdown numbers: “Women Be Wise” and “Go Back Where You Stayed Last Night.” Dancing is rarely showcased on Broadway these days, so the abundance on view here is a particular treat. Virgil Gadson is a sparkplug who seems to spend as much time flitting across the stage on his hands as he does on his nimble feet. He’s joined on the number “Hottentot” by another
mesmerizing original, Julius Chisolm, who
lives up to his nickname by moving with the sinuous elegance of a human Slinky. Tap-crazy? You’ll be in seventh heaven. There are several superb tap specialists in the company — the bright-eyed Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards has one of the zestier solo spots — but the most exciting is Jared Grimes, whose feet seem to give off sparks as he alternately punishes and caresses the floor in one of the evening’s climactic numbers, Ellington’s “It Don’t Mean a Thing.” Mr. Carlyle’s watery ballet choreography for the elegant Karine Plantadit doesn’t do full justice to this dancer’s pantherlike grace, but she nevertheless holds the stage confidently in her several solos. Blink and you’ll miss the contributions of Desmond Richardson, a noted ballet and modern dancer who flits through the show briefly but grabs the spotlight with authority when
it finds him on “The Mooche.” But it’s the authority of the musicians, that makes
“After Midnight” a memorable night at the theater. Ellington was famed for his innovations in orchestrating and arranging music creating a distinctive sound that brought to jazz a symphonic richness while maintaining an improvisatory quality that allowed each musician to contribute to the whole. The hallmarks of his style are recreated here beautifully. The sound of a trumpet puts a comic accent here, a bluesy one there. The trombones wail and moan in a manner that sounds almost human. The woodwind players are no less expressive. You know you are in the presence of musicians of a supremely high caliber, but the virtuosity never feels prepackaged or mechanical. There’s too much joy in the playing, and that’s the feeling audiences will be floating out of the theater on when the last note has died out.

The devastation brought on by Hurricane Sandy is widespread and has had an effect on virtually everyone in the region. Most individual municipalities have set up
their own relief centers, benefit organizations & fundraising programs. However, there is a
Central Call Center set up to get information & assistance for emergency services, housing assistance, food &
medical services, family services, etc.
Call 211 or go online to www.nj211.orgYou can also contact this Central Call Center to volunteer or make a donation to the Hurricane Recovery.

About Operation Restored Warrior Program
Rescue, Rebuild, and Restore
The cost of sustaining the freedoms we so cherish as a people and a nation are increasingly carried upon the shoulders of the men and women of our Armed Forces. Their immense personal cost is only just now being recognized in our nation through catchwords like PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), Combat Related Stress (CRS), as well as physically wounded warriors, suicide, and other classifications. Their battles are real, the life wounds often deep, and never has a clear path to restoration been more needed yet found so scarce. Operation Restored Warrior is open to all faiths and brings together mission, healing, and ministry to places and memories within the warrior’s heart that need the hope, the healing, and the power of God through our experiential, multiple day, wilderness setting “counterattacks”. Our cornerstone 5 day program is called the “Drop Zone” and for over 5 years has proven to help service members from all branches of our military. From intelligence analysts to Navy SEALS and Army Delta, and from Chaplains to Surgeons and everyone in between – healing knows no boundaries. Participants have experienced the freedom, restoration, and healing their hearts and lives have longed for and so desperately needed. We don’t renovate, we restore the warrior to what was intended.
VeteranA former member of the armed forces;
A person of experience or skill.
This past weekend our country celebrated Memorial Day, a day to commemorate and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms we have. Watching all the parades and TV shows, we are reminded of how many service men and women actually gave up their lives or were permanently disabled so that we can live freely. Let us never forget them.
But what about those servicemen and servicewomen who are now on active duty in Afghanistan, Iraq and other dangerous parts of the world? These people will soon be coming home (God willing) to their families and hoping to resume normal lives. This means finding jobs.
Tens of thousands of young men and women joined the military as inexperienced, unskilled youth and are returning as more mature, experienced and skilled adults. They are an untapped resource who will be looking for jobs, careers & professions. With millions of U.S. citizens currently unemployed, it is not going to be easy for these returning veterans.
Whether you are a worker/owner in the hospitality industry or an employee/employer in the corporate world (big or small), let’s not forget these young people when you’re looking hire someone. They volunteered their time and service to protect us and our country. Let’s give them the opportunities they now deserve.
