PEGGY GUGGENHEIM COLLECTION
VENICE DIRECTOR’S REPORT 65
For the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the year 2008 fell into two halves. For almost six months the temporary exhibition galleries closed for a radical renovation. The museum now has spaces that are larger, lighter, and meet accessibility requirements. This has put behind us another important (and necessary) phase in our
progress toward the full expansion, conversion, and renewal of the museum on the site of Palazzo Venier dei Leoni.
The second half of the year saw a return to intensive exhibition making; at the end of May a small exhibition opened in the Galleria Gottardo, Lugano, of Peggy Guggenheim’s ethnic art collection. This was the fi rst time this little-known segment of the collection, withdrawn from public view in 1983 and conserved in storage since that date, had been celebrated in this way, with a scholarly catalogue of its own. Late in June the Peggy Guggenheim Collection hosted painting and sculpture from the Addison Gallery of American Art; in September it gave its traditional support to the U.S. Pavilion of the Venice Architecture Biennale; in early November an exhibition of the Venetian collector, dealer, and publisher Carlo Cardazzo opened, while the ethnic art collection moved from Lugano to the Fondazione Mazzotta, Milan. The end of November saw the opening of the second of our trilogy of exhibitions for the town of Vercelli in Piedmont.
Visitor numbers at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in the fi rst half of the year remained as strong as they had been in 2007, a record year. But from June onwards attendance began to slip, in response to a general drop in Venetian tourism, months before the crisis on Wall Street that led to the credit crunch. We attributed this to the strong euro, which was deterring travelers to continental Europe as a whole. As of writing this letter, the downward trend has deepened, causing us to cut back on budgeted admissions incomes, to be cautious about expenses, and to refl ect on the perhaps excessive susceptibility of the museum’s fi nances to tourism. Nevertheless the year closed on an optimistic note with the gift of a major painting by Mario Sironi, reminding us of one of the strengths of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection—its permanent and growing collection of great modern art.

A Scuola di Guggenheim Project
This project promotes art education within the Veneto region schools. It features a series of seminars for teachers, educational activities for students in schools, and tours of the collection, beginning with a conference held on October 8, 2008, to present the 2009 program and assess the 2008 program. Two seminars on the Peggy Guggenheim Collection (October 13 and 20) and four seminars on the development of the project (October 15, 16, 22, and 23) followed. From June 11 to 16, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection presented Peggy Guggenheim: una scuola per l’arte, a temporary exhibition based on the artworks of the students.
