Paul Schmidt on the false economy of cheap pipe.

“ It was a renovation job, about 10 years ago. I visit the site, and I keep hearing this dinging. Like loud. ‘Ding, ding, ding.’

“ So, these guys are hanging cast iron soil pipe. They’re hitting it with a hammer and rolling it within the hangers.

“ Guy explains to me that it’s cheap Chinese cast iron pipe. One side is thicker than the other. They are hitting it to… and I’m not making this up… find the thick side so they can roll it towards the ceiling.

I asked, ‘Why don’t you just buy American?’ They said, ‘It costs more.’

“ But all that extra time and all that damn dinging. I don’t see how it couldn’t have cost them more than they ‘saved.’”

PAYOFF: The only thing dumber than hitting cast iron pipe with a hammer? Buying cheap pipe.

For uncertain or demanding applications, CISP is the more durable choice.
