GARY VAN DYK
@gvdcapejazz
T
he 16Days ofNoViolence againstWom-
en and Children got off to a serious
start this week with a major gathering
in Athlone, and action in Bishop Lavis.
On Saturday the Bishop Lavis Cluster
commander, Brigadier Andre Lincoln,
donned his biking colours as Western Cape
Men for Change Champion and he led a pro-
cession of bikes into Vygieskraal Stadium
for the official launch of the 16 Days cam-
paign.
For the past two years Lincoln has taken
to the roads of the Western Cape to deliver
the message of this important campaign to
all 25 clusters in this region until 10 Decem-
ber.
Lincoln explained that the excitement for
this year started on Friday when they went
to Harley-Davidson in Tygervalley, who are
in partnership with the Men for Change
campaign this year.
Partnership
They have given us a Harley to be part
of our trip this year andwe are thankful that
they have become part of this initiative, he
said.
Their help is part of our partnershipwith
other government departments, civil society
organisations, community based structures
and the business sector to make people
aware of the negative impact of violence on
women and children, and the empowering of
woman and children as to what their rights
are in the fight against abuse.
This year will see the third Men for
Change Enduro Ride across the entire West-
ern Cape Province and it is unique in that
it will also include civilian riders for the
first time, who will be in support of the 16
Days of Activism Campaign Against Abuse
of Women and Children.
Theywillwill ridewith us to raise aware-
ness among the communities along the
way, continued Lincoln.
The objectives of this campaign is to in-
crease awareness by engaging communities
anddistributingpublications, supportmate-
rials and pamphlets to communities across
the Western Cape.
We want to challenge the perpetrators of
these offences to change their behaviour by
means of anger management intervention
and counselling, to enhance and encourage
partnerships between government, civil so-
ciety groups, faith-based organizations, pri-
vate sector and the media in an effort to
spread the message, and to spread the mes-
sage to themaximumnumber of women and
children in the most affected areas in the
province.
Weurgeyou for your support on this very
difficult journey by promoting the message
that abuse will not be tolerated by our men
in blue and that as warriors it is our duty
to stand up against abuse by protecting and
serving our communities with pride and
passion.
Extra hours
The Bishop Lavis cluster was also very
busy on Monday when officers took part in
another unique part of the campaign this
year.
The theme is - Its not inmy jobdescription
whereMenForChangememberswillwork
a minimum of 10 operational hours per
month, without financial remuneration or
time off.
They gathered at the Bishop Lavis Train-
ing college on Monday before setting out on
an exercise in the area with high visibility
stop and search vehicle patrols in the
hotspot crime areas, high visibility foot pa-
trols in the hotspot crime areas, enforcing
City of Cape Townbylaws, addressing scrap-
yards, informal trading and illegal struc-
tures in terms of the Land Use Ordinance,
as well as operations on identified drug and
illegal liquor outlets.
Operational focus during this campaign
will also be on gang related murder and at-
tempted murders, illegal firearms, drugs,
theft out of motor vehicles, domestic vio-
lence related crimes and robberies.

ape Town is getting ready for a groove
thatwill set the tone for a fantastic fes-
tive season.
On Saturday 6 December the beat will be
taking place with a musical extravaganza,
featuring the cream of Cape Town artists on
one grand stage.
Headline Entertainment in association
with Heart 104.9FM, Peoples Post and Ty-
gerBurger, will host the Hot Summer
Groove concert at the GrandWest Arena
and it should not be missed.
Taking to the stage are some artists need-
ing no introduction to local music lovers,
some of themhaving started in the business
as children.
Many moons ago in Mitchells Plain the
father of Emo and Loukmaan Adams start-
ed the Kinners Vannie Ses project (it is still
going strong) and the tiny talents that were
featured in this show included Ramaine
Barreiro and Alistair Izobell.
The rest, as they say, is history, withEmo,
Loukmaan and Alistair eventually getting
involved with the Kramer/Petersen pro-
ductions. All of them played the role of Bro-
ertjie in District Six The Musical at one
stage.
They were also part of the phenomenal
Kat and theKings that toured international-
ly and won a Laurence Olivier Award.
Heady days
Alistair smiles when he recalls those
heady dayswhen theywere performing and
touring with the best on the local entertain-
ment scene.
TheRockets andAlEtto playedabigpart
in taking our talent to another level, even
though we were so young, he said.
Loukman and myself were part of a tour
to Japan as part of Ricardo and Friends.
When we got back we were joined by Emo
and Ramaine and we were encouraged to
form the group Nu Fancy.
This was about 1990, and we first record-
ed with the Rockets and then on our own.
Remember that the recording studio was
next to Club Fame in Elsies River.
I think after a few years we realised this
is what we were destined to do with our
lives, says Alistair, all of us had music in
our backgrounds, he said.
The Adamss always had some people
practising there for theminstrels or theMa-
lay Choirs. They participated in those com-
petitions from a young age.
Destiny
At Ramaines place the whole family
loved music, she was always singing to
them.And inmine therewere somany fami-
ly members who played music but I am the
one that took to it professionally.
The international connections and acco-
lades also came early for some of this crew,
as Alistair explains.
When we were 12-year-olds, Loukman
and myself worked with Stevie Wonder, BJ
Thomas, Jonathan Butler and various
groups like Atlantic Star and Imagination,
so we were just motivated to keep going.
Then came the Kramer/Petersen years
and the experience is something that stays
with you forever. This experience also gave
us the confidence to find our individual
paths in our music and we all have worked
hard to make a success in our careers.
He laughs at the thought that Hot Sum-
mer Groove is a reunion concert. No
man, were all a bit different musically and
each of us has grown into a talent that can
stand on its own. But weve always re-
mained friends, weve been there for each
other andperformed in eachothers produc-
tions over the years, he explains.
The concert will also be featuring Sama-
nominated female vocal group Blackbyrd.
The Take Note band will be on stage to
back these talented artists.
If you buy a ticket to this show you stand
a chance of winning a brand new car the
latest FAWV2 1.3. All tickets go into a lucky
draw and the winner will drive away in
their new car. R5 of each ticket will be do-
nated to the TraumaCentre in Zonnebloem.

which starts at 19:30.

The City of Cape Towns Health Directorate
is battling to reduce a number of diseases
caused by lifestyle factors and poor choices
after extensive studies in Uitsig and Raven-
smead.
Every year thousands of clients are assis-
tedwith tuberculosis (TB) and other pulmo-
nary conditions, HIV, diabetes and diar-
rhoea, to name a few.
Their basket of services includes preven-
tion through awareness and education, ear-
ly diagnosis, and effective treatment. Early
diagnosis and treatment is crucial, but pre-
vention is the ultimate goal.
However, this is difficult without the coo-
peration of the public. There are many stu-
dies that highlight the increased prevalence
of chronic diseases of lifestyle in the develo-
ping world. South Africa is no exception.
In spite of the overwhelming proof of the
fact that healthier lifestyles and the cessati-
on of habits like smoking and excessive al-
cohol use are crucial to arresting the gro-
wing pandemic, changing behaviour conti-
nues to be a challenge.
In Cape Town, the tale of two communi-
ties in the Tygerberg sub-district presents
a clear case study around the impact of life-
style factors on the healthcare system.
Uitsig and Ravensmead have for years
been the focus of extensive studies, follo-
wing a finding in 2002 that they have among
the highest smoking rates in the developing
world 59%amongmenand 43%amongwo-
men, as well as one of the highest TB rates
in theworld.Theareasalsohaveaveryhigh
prevalence of emphysema and chronic
bronchitis.
City Health has worked very closely with
various partners to turn the tide, by intro-
ducing a number of interventions to coun-
ter the levels of tuberculosis in these com-
munities and to reduce the disease burden
and infection rates.
These include active screening for both
TB andHIV of all clients that attend the pri-
mary healthcare facilities for early detecti-
on and treatment, the expansion of the Ra-
vensmead Clinic to include a special TB
wing, quarterly audits to ensure that pa-
tients are adhering to the treatment pro-
gramme, and monthly inspections by Envi-
ronmentalHealth for adherence to infection
control and ventilation.
City Health has also introduced Gene Ex-
pert in cooperation with the National He-
alth Laboratory Service to expedite sputum
results for early detection of TB drug sensi-
tive patients and those starting treatment.
The TB cure rates in these communities
are encouraging, but health authorities
would bemuch happier if they could reduce
the rate of defaulting patients.
Their efforts are hampered by volatility
in the area which means community outre-
achprogrammes suffer and some clients are
fearful of visiting the clinics. Vandalism
and burglaries are challenges too, as they
affect operations at facilities, but the conti-
nued high incidence of smoking and sub-
stance abuse (alcohol and drugs) further
harms their cause and the overall health of
these communities.
They are constantly working on impro-
ving the healthcare situation and providing
the best possible care to clients.
However, they want to challenge clients
toplayamore constructive role in their own
health and wellbeing by eliminating habits
and behaviour that have a negative impact
on their health, being proactive in getting
tested regularly forHIV, TB, andmaking an
effort to adhere to their treatment regimens
if they are diagnosed with a disease.
Reducing the burden of disease is not a
government problem it is everyones pro-
blem.
Disease on increase in SA
Problem properties in Ravensmead are in
the spotlight as residents want their to get
rid of bad elements in their neighbour-
hoods.
Gary Phelps of Icon Properties recently
successfully concluded the sale of a proper-
ty located in Bertha Street, Ravensmead.
Historically the property was filled with
various social and safety issues linked to
drug use, crimes, and the site being used by
by-passers as a dump site, which created a
stigma for the road, he explains.
This affected the values of the surround-
ing properties, and created various safety
issues for the community.
Phelps negotiated the purchase of the
property from the previous owner, and ren-
ovated it into its current condition, and the
property re-sold on the open market for
R565 000, which now will have a positive
spin off for other home owners in the area
wanting to sell their properties, within the
immediate and surrounding area.
The community was extremely happy
that after several years of crime, and other
social problems taking place and causedby
the property, its finally now a beacon of
hope, and since the sale the street has be-
come quiet and peaceful, he added.
Phelps also points out to the public to re-
member that estate agents can serve as a
positive force within situations similar to
this, and if they are aware of a property
which needs to be fixed, and sold, especial-
lywhere the owners have simply lost inter-
est, they should feel welcome to contact
Icon Properties to meet with the owner,
and establishwhether a service can be ren-
dered,which canpositively change the com-
munity, and in addition createsworkwhilst
the project is in process.

An organisation inDelft is concerned at the
tragic loss of life in the area after a toddler
died in a firewhile playing in an abandoned
car.
Fazlin Fransman of Afrika Tikkun point-
ed out that the tragic death (Toddler dies in
fire, Tygerburger Wednesday 12 November)
raises much needed questions regarding
the availability of structured and safe play
and learning areas for children in Delft.
Most parents on the Cape Flats work
long hours for minimumwage and are una-
ble to afford proper pre-school or after-
school programmes for their children, she
said.
As a result, over 50%of children in these
communities are unsupervised from the
time their parents leave home, till they re-
turn in the evening.
This is a worrying due to the high rates
of drug and alcohol abuse amongst teenag-
ers in Delft. These negative influences feed
into the socio-economic conditions of the
community and cripple the youth, ensuring
they stay shackled in the cycle of poverty.
She said at Afrika Tikkun, their primary
aim is to ensure children and youth in im-
poverished communities are holistically
developed from Cradle to Career, to ensure
that theybecome thenext generationof pro-
ductive citizens.
Through our extensive work in the com-
munity, we realise the dire need for more
structured programmes to ensure children
and youth are supervised and gain needed
positive affirmations to be able to develop
holistically.
The death of the toddler is a symptom
of a bigger problem within communities
across South Africa. To be able to ensure
that children are consistently in a safe and
secure environment, we cannot solely de-
pend on the parents who many a times
spend their entire lives working for a mini-
mum wage.
It is for this reason Africa Tikkun
launched the Early Childhood Develop-
ment and Child and Youth Development
programmes.
V For more information about the programmes at
Afrika Tikkun email [email protected].

The Athlone School for the Blind received
a major boost to their education facilities
with the donation of a SMARTboard last
week.
This facility in Bellville South, along with
theBataviaSchool of Skills inClaremont,was
part of a nationwide corporate social invest-
ment programme by DionWired where the
lives ofmore than 2 500 childrenwith disabili-
ties will be revolutionised.
Seven special needs school in the Western
Cape, Gauteng, North West and Kwazulu
Natal will each receive a donation of a
SMARTboard, a revolutionary teaching
tool.
This device is an on-line, interactive
touch screen that is attached to a wall, and
enables learners with a range of disabili-
ties to participate in lessons theywould not
normally have been able to. The inclusive
education policy puts the teacher under
enormous pressure as they deal with a va-
riety of handicaps simultaneously, and
still with a great deal of compassion.
SMARTBoards add awhole newdimension
to the lessons.
At the launch lastweek, IrisNaidoo, Sen-
ior CSI Practioner from DionWired, spoke
passionately about why the company is de-
termined to make a positive contribution
to special needs education in South Africa
through a structured social investment
programme.
To see the change that comes to these
children is fantastic, she pointed out.
One precious moment that always
stands out for me was doing a launch at a
facility and a little boy came in and just
started staring at the board in amazement.
Hewalkedout andwent to fetchanolder
boy (his brother) pointed to the board and
said TV!, the older boy looked at the
board and said guitar as he spotted the
instrument on the board, andwe noticed the
excitement from the staff. It turns out that
the older boy had not spoken since he was
at the facility. That is the magic that these
boards can bring to these facilities.
As we have seen in the retail environ-
ment, South Africans are in the midst of a
digital revolution. However, the high tech
equipment that is transforming peoples
worlds is usually out of reach for special
needs learners, said General Manager for
DionWired, Nazim Cassim.
He said what would normally only be
shown on a computer screen is projected on-
to the large white SMARTBoard in a class-
room.
For example, a physically handicapped
student who is unable to write, is now able
to approach the board in a wheelchair and
touch the interactive icons and participate
in the lesson.
Weare encouragedbyhow this boosts the
students confidence and facilitates learn-
ing, he added.
The value of a SMARTBoard donation, in-
cluding specialised software and equip-
ment, is around R100 000 per school, bring-
ing the total investment in the project to
over R2,5 million from the retailer.
The company has donated 57 SMART-
boards to special needs schools in four prov-
inces.
SMARTboards transform special needs childrens learning
Iris Naidoo gets to show
Fletcher Fischer, principal
of the Athlone School of
the Blind, and Hannes
Swart, principal of the
Batavia School of Skills,
some of the finer points
of using the SMARTboard.

She said certain areas will be serviced by

ing, Mitchells Plain and Nyanga Switching

bie Nurock Clinic and Site B Youth Clinic.
Each access point will cost between

Hartroerende afskeid vir
seun (1) van Rocketslid
BRENDEN RUITER
@ruitervaniewind
Liam Hendricks (1), seun van die The Roc-
kets-lid, Devanish, is Saterdag n n hart-
roerende begrafnisdiens in die Belhar-be-
graafplaas ter ruste gel.
Liam het verlede Dinsdag skielik in die
Tygerberg-hospitaal aan vermoedelik n di-
abetes-verwante siekte gesterf.
By Saterdag se begrafnis het sowat 250
Daar-
na het die geestelike danseres, Prophetic
Praise, op die maat van I want to Run to
You gedans. Devanish se kollega Theo
Watt, het die Eric Clapton-treffer Tears in
Heaven onder begeleiding van The Roc-
kets gesing.
is. Daarin sing hy Michael Jackson se lied
Gone too Soon.
Devanish en sy vrou, Victoria, het ook
saam met hul gospel-groep, Prophetic Joy,
sangitems gelewer.
My seun was die slimste in die wreld,
my hart wees.
Victoria het Liam as n klein engel be-
skryf.
my en my man toevertrou het.

Paarlberg by tewoon. Dis nie net die begees-
terdemusiekwat hulle lok nie, maar ook die
pragtige uitsig vanaf die Liqui-Fruit-amfite-
ater en die gesellige atmosfeermet hope kos-
en wyn-stalletjies.
TygerBurger, Die Burger en Tygerberg
104fm is die mediaborge van die konsert,
wat vanjaar vir die vierde keer aangebied
word.
Klassieke Kers-
fees van 2014 spog
met vyf van die
land se top-kun-
stenaars, almal
met unieke stem-
me. JannieMool-
man en Zanne
Stapelberg is
reeds sedert die
eerste jaar deel
van die konsert.
Vir Cobus Sny-
man sal dit die
tweede keer
wees wat hy sy
buiging maak by
Klassieke Kers-
fees. Hy was die groot verrassing by verlede
hul gewildste treffers.
In baie gevalle sal dit slegs by Klassieke
Kersfees wees waar di kunstenaars saam
as groep sal sing.
sing, asook heelwat tydlose treffers.
Klassieke Kersfees is
alles behalwe net vir die connoisseur, s
Jannie.
Die klassieke treffer Va Pensiero, wat
Jannie die aand
onder meer gaan
sing, beloof om n
staande toejui-
ging te kry. Hy
gaan ook n paar
liedjies saam met
Corlea en Zanne
sing. Corlea en
Zanne het albei
ongelooflike
stemme en dit is
altyd n voorreg
om saam met hul-
le te sing.
Ook op die pro-
gram is verskeie
fonds geskenk.
Kaartjies, wat wissel tussen R130 en R150,
is beskikbaar by www.cultivaria.com of by
Computicket. Dis n aand vir die hele gesin
so kom dus vroeg en geniet die sonsonder-
gang vanaf Paarlberg.

Most children think of their school shoes as
just a part of a dreary uniform.
They represent 12 years of slog and for
many the first sign of freedom is to relegate
them to a pile of discarded clothes immedi-
ately after writing that last matric exam.
But imagine if you didnt have shoes, espe-
cially during our cold winters when you
have to negotiate puddles. In some families
children have to share a pair of shoes, with
siblings taking turns to wear them.
This is the reality for many children from
less fortunate backgrounds. Their parents
simply dont have the money for school
shoes. Somany of themgo to school barefoot.
You can help. Simply leave your school
shoes at your desk after you have written
your last exam for the year. Please ensure
you ask your parents permission to do so.
The shoes need to be in usable condition. Tie
the shoes together so the pairs are not lost
when they are boxed up. The shoes must be
boxed and ready for collection in the new
year.
V Participating schools donating shoes can contact
Peoples Post at [email protected] with the
words Walk Away in the subject field.

S
outhAfricansmobile phoneuserswill
soon be able to enjoy the pleasures of
a brand-new device to hit the market
the Smart Tablet.
The device, the first 3G tablet Vodacom
say, is designed specifically for the local
market. Vodacom customers are now able
to buy the tablet, the mobile giant said this
week.
Called the Vodacom Smart Tab 3G, this
7 tablet runs the latest Android 4.4 KitKat
operating system and is available on con-
tract for just R69 per month inclusive of
1GB of data each month and a month free
music streaming with the Deezer Premi-
um+ application program.
Ideal for the market
We lookedat thedevices currently in the
market in South Africa and realised there
was amassive gap.The smartphones and ta-
blets on offer were either prohibitively ex-
pensive or cheap and badly specced. We
sketched outwhatwe thought the ideal spe-
cificationswere for SouthAfrica, andusing
the purchasing power of Vodafones global
device team, we were able to have the devi-
cemanufactured at a price point thatworks
out at R2 per day, Vodacoms chief com-
mercial officer, Phil Patel said.
The Smart Tab 3G, which weighs in at
275g, features a 7 960x540 TFT capacitive
touch screen display, a 2 megapixel rear-fa-
cing camera for pictures and video, a 0.3
megapixel front-facing camera for video
calls and selfies, 4GB of memory which is
expandable up to 32GB via micro-SD card,
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Zulu language sup-
port. In addition to the R69 per month 24
month contract, inclusive of 1GB of data
each month, the Smart Tab 3G is also avai-
lable on a prepaid basis for R999. The pre-
paid device comes with 100MB of data each
month for the first three months.
Bridging the divide
Vodacomwants to bridge the digital divi-
de in South Africa. Introducing high-qua-
lity, low-priced devices is just one leg of our
three-part strategy to connect SouthAfrica.
The first leg is the network itself were in-
vesting R9 billion across South Africa this
year to expand both the reach and quality
of our coverage.
Thismeansmaking sure that we have 3G
coverage everywhere we have 2G and beef-
ing up our systems to handle the huge data
growth we see in the cities and townships.
Next, weve been working hard to make da-
tamore affordable, and on average our data
prices is down 30% on last year, which is
a big achievement given the increase on
things like electricity and fuelwhich are al-
so our input costs, said Patel.
WIN! WIN! WIN!

includes 100mb for three months. SMS the word

The stories of women in Delft will coming
to life with the launch of a publication on
Saturday.
The Institute for Healing of Memories
(IHOM), Community Healing Programme,
in partnership with Sakha Isizwe and
Youth Art Development Co-operation
(YARD) will be launching it within the 16
Days of Activism Campaign because many
of the stories are of their triumph over ad-
versity.
Titled Building and Healing a Communi-
ty - a Story from Delft, this publication is
a collection of biographical stories from
several women living in Delft.
They are refreshingly positive stories of
triumphover adversity despite all thenega-
tive publicity that continues to plague the
communities of Delft.
Most wonderful of all is to see this group
of women/wounded healers becoming role
models and signs of hope for Delft.
Each of the women speak very openly
about their lives in what often seemed like
an emotional roller coaster. Of course as
well as too much pain, the women each
have a great deal of resilience.
The role played by Sakha Isizwe, the
IHOM, YARD and others, in the upliftment
of theDelft community in general and these
women in particular, is patently demon-
strated in their narratives.
Their stories clearly illustrate that heal-
ing is not an end in itself. As people become
healed they become freed to reach out in
compassion to others and work for the
transformation of their communities.
To read these stories is to be acutely
aware of the role of gender violence that
women suffer and endure at the hands of
men.
Also evident is the destructive power of
alcohol and drugs on individuals and com-
munities.
Guest speaker at the launch which will
be held at the Homecomng Centre in
Buitenkant Street, Cape Town, is Ellen Pa-
kkes a person who can empathise with
these stories through her own experiences.

This is the

Hundreds of people searched for their na-
mes on the more than 11 000 iikomityi
(drinking vessels) in an installation on the
lawn of the Castle in Cape Town on Sunday.
It was the culmination of Ukusela eKapa,
anofficialWorldDesignCapital 2014 project
in which people who took part in the pro-
ject, collected an ikomityi their own, if
they were lucky enough to find it, or someo-
ne elses. The idea was that the project will
connect people by shaking hands with a
stranger when they hold someone elses
ikomityi made in the handprint of the
other person.
Ukusela eKapa, which means Drink Ca-
peTown in, is a joint venturebetweencera-
mic artist Hennie Meyer from Durbanville,
and architect Janine de Waal.
The project raised design awareness du-
ring Cape Town World Design Capital 2014,
connecting 10 000 people through design.
Each participant created a unique drin-
king vessel by imprinting their hand on soft
clay and writing their first name and age
on the base.
The mobility of the project enabled Uku-
sela eKapa to squeeze in each of the citys
24 subcouncils. Visitors to Cape Town from
around SouthAfrica and from over 50 coun-
tries took part in the project.
The installation was built by renowned
land artist Strijdom van derMerwe. He told
TygerBurger at the official opening of the
installation on Saturday evening that the
symbolic meaning of this specific design
was that the lines represent the connection
of communities by roads and streets.
The islands, which were connected
with lines, represent towns and cities
each with the names of all the people that
live in them, represented by the names at
the bottom
