True/FalseTrue/ False statements are a productive way to get students to think about equality.
3 + 2 = 55 = 3 + 2
5 = 53 + 2 = 3 + 2 3 + 2 = 2 + 33 + 2 = 4 + 1
Are the following equations true or false?
Begin with equations that children are familiar with seeing. Move toward equations that are not in the 2 numbers and operation on left and answer on right format.

Teddy Bear Counters
Comparing teddy bear counters is a concrete way to problem solve and make algebraic connections.
Using Number Balances
More Than- Less Than- Equal: Student A picks a number card and places a weight on his/her side of the balance. Student B picks a number card from the deck and places a weight on his/her side of the balance. What happened? Record the discoveries on the recording sheet. (Ex: 4 is more than 3; 6 is less than 9). NOTE: Only after many experiences with the language of “more than” and “less than” are the symbols (< >) introduced and used.Variation: Students pick two number cards: Ex: 2 and 5 is more than 3 and 1.

Mr. Pip’s Fruit Balance
This drag and drop balance scales simulation is an open ended application that teachers can use to support mathematical learning in a variety of ways.
You will need to click on Manage Mass and reset the weights of the fruits to numbers that are manageable for your class.
