BackgroundBackground Dec 1999 – 78th IOM Council Session in Geneva, RTG requested IOM to address
the needs of displaced persons and migrant living along the border of Myanmar
Sep - Dec 2000 – IOM/MOPH Joint Assessment involving 8 provinces; Recommended Programme of Action
2001 to 2002 – Project development, proposal writing and fund raising
Sep 2002 – USAID funded the Migrant Health Project for Tak and Chiang Rai Province
May – Aug 2003 – Development of the detailed project implementation plan
Oct 2003 – MHP Field Office and Team established in Tak and Chiang Rai Province
Mar 2004 – EC funded the Migrant Health Project for 20,000 Shan Migrants

Main ObjectiveMain Objective
Strengthen the response capacity of the RTG’s Ministry of Public Health in the sustained provision of cost effective primary care, reproductive health and communicable disease control services to migrants and their Thai host communities in targeted provinces.

Specific PurposesSpecific Purposes
increase awareness of migrants on health assess basic sanitation conditions, define solutions,
develop projects and raise fund support delivery of preventative and curative health
services on basic primary health care, communicable disease control and reproductive health services
create a replicable model on strengthening health interventions in Thai communities hosting large population of migrants
establish system that provides regularly reliable surveillance data on health status of migrants
assess cost recovery schemes and financing options for provision of basic health care services to migrants
