to this year’s fantastic Somersham Carnival. We have
an exciting line-up of events to challenge and entertain you over the nine days
of Carnival ‘week’ and you’ll find all the details in this programme.
The theme for Carnival 2014 is “Commonwealth”, not only to link in with the
2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, but also with the whole idea of the more
than 50 nations around the World with ties of friendship with the UK. It’s the
theme expressed by the winning entry of our Commonwealth Flag Design
competition that you will find on the cover of this programme, and will see
flying for real on Carnival Day (Saturday June 21).
You too can fly the flag — or otherwise express your own ideas about
Commonwealth — in the Procession and Fancy Dress Contest on Carnival Day.
It’s always a good excuse to dress up and have fun.
If you’re sporty, we’ve got our own Commonwealth Games going on, on
Saturday June 14 and this year’s Tour de France and World Cup have nothing on
the Family Cycle Ride and Five-a-Side Tournament on Sunday June 22. For the
more sedentary, you can join The Great Flag Hunt during Carnival week, try your
hand at the video games on the GamersBus or relax at the Outback Bar, both
new this year, and on the field on Carnival Day.
Thank you for all your continuing support,

Not only does Somersham Carnival offer an amazing variety of events over the course of the Carnival Week, it also distributes moneys raised to local charities and organisations, allowing them to do more throughout the year. We had a super year in 2013 with our 'Beside the Seaside’ Carnival. At the Carnival AGM (to which all members of our community are most warmly invited) it was agreed to match the record donations total of £2,500 that was made to local groups the previous year (you can see the full list of donations made in 2013 on page 45). We look forward to another fantastic Carnival this year and we look forward to receiving your group's requests for donations before this year's Carnival AGM on September 10, 2014.

IN MEMORIAM
In the last year, Somersham has suffered the loss of two cherished members of our community who were also valued contributors to the success of Carnival for many years.
James Ian Smith
1947 - 2013
Somersham Lake, Christmas Lights, Carnival Procession
and Remembrance Day Parade have all enjoyed the hand of
Ian Smith, a stalwart of our community and always the
practical one – directing traffic, planting trees and generally
offering a helpful hand.
Ian was born in Leicester in 1947 and moved to Selkirk,
Scotland when he was three. At 16 he went to work as a
forrester at Bowhill House and in 1966 joined the army in the
REME, travelling to Malaya, Singapore, Belize, Northern
Ireland and Germany, where he met Jenny at a teachers’
Christmas drinks party. They married in 1975. In Hong Kong,
their first child Timothy was born with cerebral palsy so
they came to Cambridgeshire to be near a good hospital.
They moved to Somersham in 1980 and their son Cameron
was born the same year.
Following postings in the Falklands just after the war,
and Canada, Ian left the army and worked for Marshalls
(where he ran the London Marathon on three occasions) and
then for AIM in Waterbeach, the MOD in Wyton and latterly
Bristol, before retiring in 2012.
When Ian moved to the village he got involved – with the
school PFA and the Parish Council, the Christmas Lights
Working Party (a founding member), Lake Working Party (as
Tree Warden) and Friends of Somersham Nature Reserve.
He was on the Feoffees Committee, the Hammond Trust
Committee, and trustee of the Royal British Legion, in 2013
carrying the Standard at the Remembrance Day Parade.
Ian died in December as a result of a tragic accident at
home. Kind, considerate, and a dearly loved husband and
father, he will be missed by his family and all who knew him.
Colin Frank Ayres
1946 - 2013
If you’ve rested on his hay bales or waved to the tractor driver
pulling the Pony Club float at Carnival, or if you’ve enjoyed his
quizzes at nearby pubs, you’ve known Colin Ayres.
Colin liked to say he was born in an animal shelter – that is
Wood Green in the days when it was King’s Bush Farm. From a
family of farmers, Colin joined the Young Farmers in St Neots
and later set up a club at Gamlingay. He met Mary at the village
dance and they applied to the County Council for a small-
holding in Somersham, which they ran for eight years after
they were married in 1972. They then moved to a 100-acre farm
in Ramsey St Marys but returned to Somersham and took on
land to grow potatoes, onions, and cauliflowers among others.
Colin would always lift his own potatoes. Once when Colin’s
head popped up to tell the ladies on the potato sorter
something, one of them asked, “Who’s driving?” only to get
the answer “Nobody”!
Colin also took on contract work, baling, spraying, hedge
cutting and fertilising, and he and Mary started their own
business baling, storing and selling hay. It was popular and
Colin would always look after the local horse community,
which is how he came to decorate and pull the Pony Club float.
Colin also ran the local shoot for years and had an interest
in CB radio (call sign: Straw Man). More recently, Colin set
quizzes for three local pubs and for the NFU – he went to his
last quiz at the Prince of Wales dressed as Father Christmas!
After a first heart attack in 2005, Colin gave up smoking and
lost over five stone to become Slimmer of the Year, but in
December he died of a further coronary while driving in the fen.
A loving husband to Mary and a friend to many, Colin’s
cheerful ways will be missed.
