Here comes the
end of the summer
sessions, and this
will be the last news-
letter for summer B.
Despite the fewer
number of students
in Journalism class in
session B, everyone
in the class still
brought in a variety
of stories every week to include in TAN.
I want to thank everyone in the Jour-
nalism class for writing about their life ex-
periences, movie reviews, tips to survive in
the city, and introductions to entertaining
places and nice restaurants. I have enjoyed
a lot sharing thoughts and stories with my
classmates. It has been my pleasure to help
the class as editor this session.
Also, I would like to thank Sonja for
organizing our stories and making TAN
possible. We would not have done such a
great job without her help.
I hope that you all had an enjoyable
time reading our stories and find them use-
ful. I had so much fun in Journalism class
and I’m glad that I was able to take this
class for both of the summer sessions.
Good luck to the Language Academy stu-
dents!

Restaurant Review
SPICY SEAFOOD and
CAJUN COOKING Amy Mingjie Yuan
If you like spicy food and seafood,
the BOILING CRAB is definitely a
place you must go. I went to one of
them in Orange County last Sunday
with several friends and had a big
meal.
In the restaurant, the decoration is
unique and makes you feel like you
are on a fishing boat. When you or-
der, there are not so many choices.
They mainly served crab, shrimp,
lobster, crawfish, oysters and clams.
Then you can pick a seasoning and
choose how spicy you want it. My
favorite seasoning is THE WHOLE
SHA-BANG, which contains all
three other seasonings -- RAJUN
CAJUN, LEMON PEPPER and
GARLIC BUTTER. This sauce
matches perfectly with KING CRAB
LEGS and SHRIMP. Their calamari
is good too and their Cajun Fries and
Sweet Fries compliment their sea-
food so well and it makes me hungry
just thinking about it.
It’s a good place for the enjoy-
ment of fresh seafood and spending
quality time with family and friends.
Just go crazy with the menu because
everything is incredibly good. And it
won’t cost you so much for a meal.
The shrimp is $8.99/lb., and the fried
catfish basket is only $8.99, too. Go
with friends! The more people you
go with, the more dishes you can try,
and the lower price it will be.
All branches of Boiling Crab are
going to be busy and crowded and
you can expect to wait. So go to the
restaurant early; otherwise you
maybe very hungry.

Having taken summer session lan-
guage courses for six weeks, I not only
have improved my English skills under
the supervision of instructors, but also
have developed a taste of the flavor of
Los Angeles life.
I have been to many places of inter-
est in Los Angeles which have left a
deep impression on me. The first place
that I went to was Hollywood and
Highland. I enjoyed the Walk of Fame,
which encompasses five acres of
bronze stars lining both sides of Holly-
wood Boulevard from Gower to La
Brea, and both sides of Vine Street,
from Yucca to Sunset.
I also went to the Hollywood Bowl
on July 4th American Independence
Day and appreciated the kaleidoscopic
fireworks. During American Independ-
ence Day holiday, Troy East Apart-
ments organized a trip to Universal
Studios. Although I queued for about 1
hour to take the Studio Tour, I really
enjoyed the trip. We went behind-the-
scenes on the legendary Studio Tour to
explore Hollywood’s most famous back
lot in the world’s largest working
movie studio. These
places have enriched
my life during sum-
mer.
In addition, I am
so surprised to find
that there are so
many delicious Chi-
nese restaurants in
Los Angeles, making
me feel like I was
back home. The first
Chinese restaurant
that I went to is
called Dong Bei Res-
taurant; I was so
excited to have a Chi-
nese menu and order Chinese food.
I also went to Shanghai Restau-
rant, and Si Chuan Restaurant. The
flavor of their food is just like that in
China. It’s a great time to dine outside
with my best friends. Besides Chinese
food, my friend also drove me to some
Korean and Japanese restaurants as
well as dessert shops. Los Angeles is
overwhelmed by international food,
making it a paradise for people from all
over the world.
I also stepped outside Los Angeles
and travelled to Las Vegas. My friends
drove cars there, and we had a wonder-
ful experience there. Time flies! Next
week Summer Session B will end. I am
looking forward to the Closing Cere-
mony and my graduate studies in An-
nenberg.

Trojans Forever by Jonathan Liu
This weekend will
be my final one in L.A.
I think some of you
may have had an unfor-
gettable experience at
USC just like me. At
the end of the summer
session, I feel I have
really gained several
kinds of knowledge
and opened my eyes. Doubtless, USC
Language Academy definitely offers a
unique program and makes it possible
for me to embrace my own USC life.
There are three ways that I have bene-
fited from my experience: communica-
tive skills, comparing cultures and con-
cepts, and interesting people.
First of all, all-round courses help
me to sharpen up my communicative
abilities. It is indispensable to represent
yourself in the best way, whether to
friends, professionals, or potential em-
ployers. Take oral class for example.
Group discussion forces you to think
and speak coherently. Several kinds of
presentations enable you to express
your ideas and cooperate to get the
work done quickly. Doubtless, these
assignments help me to polish my com-
munication skill.
Second, culture and concept make
you think from different perspectives.
Culture shock is a life-long learning. I
think that culture shock leads us to re-
flect on ourselves. From different
countries’ histories, you can be im-
mersed in different kinds of culture.
Also, I started learning how to explain
my own concepts. The teachers encour-
age us to think about where the idea
comes from. They want to know why
rather than the results.
Third, interesting people enrich my
life. I’ve got several friends from dif-
ferent countries. When I count my
Facebook friends that I add as friends,
the number amounts to over fifty peo-
ple. This means I have made two new
friends a day during this summer.
Though I was concerned about unex-
pected situations at the beginning, I
still told myself I would meet like-
minded, pleasant and humorous people.
Embrace your life with an open mind!

Going to LAX? Airport Shuttles are worth the price.
How was the summer session B for you? Was it hard? Was it busy? The summer session B finished this week. You were able to make many friends from different countries and make precious memories. It is the time to say good bye to each other. Some people are leaving USC Lan-guage Academy, some people will stay here.
Are you planning to leave here? When you leave LA, if someone gives you a ride, it will be very good and convenient. But if not, you should take a bus or taxi. However, using buses is not good for moving your big suitcases, and it is too ex-pensive to go to the airport by taxi.
Here is the information for alter-native transportation to go to the airport. It is the airport shuttle. Air-port shuttle companies provide shuttle service for a reasonable price, and they will help you to carry all of your stuff to the front of the airport.
If you are interested in this shuttle bus, you can call or check some internet website. Checking internet websites is easier and more conven-ient to make reservations. Their website will suggest a form to fill out your flight information. After you complete the form, they will
show to you the proper time to pick you up. Also, you can choose the shuttle that you want.
The regular shuttle price is less than $20. For example, Prime Time Shuttle provides a regular shuttle for only $15 from USC campus or near to LAX airport. <Airport Shuttles> -Super Shuttle www.airportshuttles.com/ 800.258.3826. -Prime Time Shuttle www.primetimeshuttle.com/ 800.73.8267
If you have a USC ID card, you can get 10% discount. If you want to get discount, you can check online link below. http://primetimeshuttle.hudsonltd.net/res?USERIDNTRY=TROYJAN&LOGON=GO

Drama Elective Performance Shows
Students’ Talents
On Wednesday at 2p.m., the Drama Elective class
performed a play adopted from the book called “ The
Octette Bridge Club” by P. J. Barry.
The story takes place on a Friday evening in Octo-
ber 1934 in Rhode Island. Eight sisters meet up for a
bridge party every other Friday.
This Friday, a journalist joins their party to inter-
view the sisters and have the sisters’ photograph taken.
Each of the sisters shares something about their chil-
dren, pets, husband, and how they organize the party.
Directed by Ms. Priscilla Taylor, nine students took
part in the play. They prepared costumes, props and
put lots of effort into practice.
Director of Language Academy Kate O’Conner,
Pam, Gilbert, Jessica and Jackie all came to watch the
performance.
Everyone in
the audience
enjoyed the
performance
and highly
praised the
play.

Balloon Festival
The hot air balloon is not a new invention.
The unmanned hot air balloon was discovered
and became popular in Chinese history. It was
used for military signaling in the Three King-
doms era (220–280 AD). Until 1783, the first
manned flight was built by the brothers Joseph-
Michel and Jacques-Etienne Montgolfier in
France. Why can the huge balloon fly? Even
take people into the sky? The raising air tem-
perature by fire inside the balloon makes it
lighter than the surrounding air.
A grand and hilarious festival of balloons
was held on July 27 and 28 in Santa Paula. My
friends and I went to the event from LA down-
town at 4:30 a.m. After a one and a half hour
drive, we arrived at a small park. Most of the
hot air balloons started to prepare under the
first light of foggy morning. This was the first
time that I had witnessed the hot air balloon.
Most balloons were private, with various and
diverse colors and patterns. The cutest one was
the panda balloon. Those hot air balloons in-
flated with a huge fan. The enormous balloon
filled up with air and stood up bit by bit. They
flew up in the sky one by one. Those hot air
balloons were so brilliant and colorful that the
sky was like a painting.
There were four hot air balloons that pro-
vided people for rides. We chose the highest
and biggest hot air balloon. When we stood in
the bucket, the hot air ignited our necks.
See Hot Air Balloon on p. 8
HOT AIR BALLOON Continued from p. 7
The hot air balloon rose gradually with the stuff heated the air. The
wind swayed us and shook the hot air balloon slightly. The beautiful
views unfolded before our eyes. It stayed in the sky for about five min-
utes, and then we started to come down. At the landing moment, many
staff members jumped into the bucket and kept it on the ground. It was a
really fun experience firsthand for me!
If you miss this festival, don’t worry
about it! There is a free balloon you can
try in Orange County Great Park.
