Term 3 Week 4 Thursday 16th August 2018 Book Week Parade
We are having Book Week a week later than other schools due to
our stage 3 excursion to Canberra. We will be hosting our Book
Week (dress up) Parade on Tuesday 28th August (Week 6) at 12
midday. The theme is ‘FIND YOUR TREASURE’. We can’t wait to see
all the students’ creative costumes!!! More information is available
later in the newsletter. See our Facebook page for some cheap and
easy (or fairly easy) ideas.
Canberra Excursion
Our year 5 and 6 students are off to Canberra for 3 days next week.
This is a fantastic opportunity for our students and strongly
supports the work they are doing related to government.
Something we all need to understand as Australian citizens.
All payments for Canberra were due last week. If you are having
difficulty paying please come and talk to me as all money will need
to be paid for students to attend the excursion unless another
arrangement had previously been made with me.
Swimming School
Swimming school has been offered to all year 2 and year 6 students
now. This swimming school is aimed at poor or non-swimmers. If
your child cannot swim 50m confidently and proficiently they
should be doing swimming school. Swimming lessons are paid for
by Dept. of Education. You are only paying pool entry and cost of
the bus. We have 60 places available and last time I checked only
22 places had been taken up.
Unfortunately the Dept. of Education does not offer the program to
year 1 and 2 students. I’m sure you can understand that it would be
quite difficult for many of them to get changed and organised in
this context. Student assistance is available for families who have
difficulty paying.
It's important our children can swim. We live on a peninsula. I am
passionate about ensuring our students can swim, after having a
student who had attended my previous school, drown in the lake a
few years ago.
Our Facebook page is for positive promotion of school events. Any
negative comments will be removed as we want our school to be
viewed in the most positive way in the community. If you have a
problem with something that is happening, please make an
appointment to discuss the problem so you can have a complete
understanding of what is happening.
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Reward Day
All students will be part of our PBL reward day to be held on
Tuesday 28th August after our book parade. To reward our students
at Gwandalan for following our PBL expectations we will have an
additional 20 minutes of playtime after recess where all teachers
will come to the playground and join students in their activities. We
will endeavour to plan different reward day for students every 5
weeks to reward them for their behaviour. In future, students who
have been suspended or attended PBL room a number of times will
be excluded.
Education Week
We had a wonderful Education week assembly and open class-
rooms visit. I was impressed to see so many parents visiting class-
rooms. I know your children really enjoy you visiting and seeing
what they are doing. Thank you to Mrs Tangye for organising our
assembly and congratulations to all the students who received
awards and to our amazing performers and public speakers.
PBL Surveys
Thank you to those parents who completed our PBL survey during
open day. We have also been seeking ideas from our students. We
want to create a “vision” statement for our PBL program. I will be
inviting parents, students and teachers to be part of developing this
statement on Monday 10th September.
There will be more information in the next newsletter.
Athletics Carnival We had a great day for our Athletics carnival. Student’s behaviour was outstanding and they were all enthusiastic to try their very best which was great to see. Thanks to Mr Turner for his organisation of the day. We have 42 students who will attend the zone carnival on 30th August. Information will be sent home tomorrow for those students. We wish them the best of luck. Parent Teacher Interviews Parent/Teacher interviews are almost complete. If you have not received the information please contact our office.

New Kindergarten Students for 2018
It is again that time of year where we start to organise our
Kindergarten Transition to School program. We ask our
community if we have any families that may have a child that is
starting school next year to please come into the school office
and put their name down so that they can receive all the
information directly. This year we are going to continue our
extended transition program starting with our Picnic in the Park
this term. We will then, during Term 4, run 4 transition days for
students and their parents. This is a great opportunity for our
students to get a wonderful start to their schooling journey.
Please contact the school if you require any additional
information or just need to ask a question.
Parent Code of Conduct
I have previously included with the newsletter our Parent Code
of Conduct. This can be accessed on our webpage in the “Our
School” tab under “Rules and Polices”. I want to remind
everyone to; “treat all persons associated with the school with
respect and courtesy”. This includes in and around the school
and includes people of all races and religions. People who do not
follow our Code of Conduct are at risk of being excluded from
the school grounds. We have had a recent incident where a
parent has received racist comments outside our school.
Kind Regards
Sandy Notley
