Telensa® PLANet® – Public Lighting Active Network
Adding wireless remote control for your street, roadway and area lighting makes financial sense, whether you are switching to LED or retro-fitting to existing fixtures. With remote control, you can save energy by only using the precise amount of light you need and by accurately measuring every watt used. You can cut maintenance costs with real-time fault monitoring and by using detailed operational intelligence to improve day-to-day effectiveness and planning.
Telensa PLANet is the world’s #1 outdoor lighting control system, with one million telecells around the world. Our long-range, low-power radio system offers the easiest deployment, we are compatible with all of the leading lighting manufacturers, and we integrate easily with other systems. What’s more, Telensa is at the forefront of the Internet of Things (IoT), enabling you to add smart city sensors to your streetlights, and to add smart city applications, such as parking, to your Telensa remote control network.

Why wireless control?Save energy
When you take minute-by-minute control of the light output of every fixture, major energy savings can be made. This is achieved by varying light output during the night, by making on/off times more precise, and by adjusting power to deliver a constant light output that adapts both to cleaning regimes and to the natural degradation of LEDs and conventional lamps over time.
Reduce maintenance costs
When you have a real-time graphical view of the status of every fixture in the city, there is no need for costly night maintenance patrols. Harnessing this central intelligence also ensures that maintenance teams are only on site when really needed, and analytics tools enable fixture lifecycles to be anticipated and planned for.
Improve citizen well-being and security
Street and area lighting is an emotive issue. For every community concerned about light pollution there is another where fear of crime is the main issue. The fact is that community and business needs are diverse, locally specific and they vary over time. Wireless remote control allows the lighting experience to be precisely tailored, to evolve over time, and to be directly changed when events dictate.
Telensa UNB the wireless IoT network with the proven business case
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the key to the economic and operational success of wireless remote control for streetlights lies with the wireless technology employed. Telensa Ultra Narrow Band (UNB) radio is a type of Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) wireless network. It has several key advantages for controlling street and area lighting: • UNB can be deployed in a matter
of days to cover a complete city.
• There are no ongoing connectivity costs.
• You have complete freedom where and when to connect lights to the network.
Compare this with complex mesh networks, which require incremental rollout and 20x more base stations to cover the same area, or cellular-based systems that can be prohibitively expensive to deploy at scale.
Telensa UNB is proven all over the world, and with 1.5 million telecells, it is the undisputed market leader in wireless outdoor lighting controls. What’s more, as soon as the network is deployed, it is ready for a range of other smart city applications to be added.

Benefits of adaptive control Drive value from your LED streetlight investmentStreetlights are difficult and expensive to manage. Telensa’s PLANet solution enables control of vast populations of lights from a single cloud-based or customer-hosted Central Management System (CMS). By providing detailed analytics from all streetlights, PLANet aids operations and reduces maintenance costs:
• Immediate fault notification• Faster, organized response to failures
• Eliminate day-burners• Reduce night maintenance inspections

Smart city applicationsbuilt on streetlight economics
Telensa has applied its deep understanding of streetlight economics and technology innovation to other smart city applications, to enable today’s pilots to become productive mass-scale deployments.
Waste AnalyticsLack of transparency in waste collection means service levels cannot be measured and performance cannot be built into service contracts. Telensa’s low cost solution provides the data cities need to improve service levels and enforce efficient performance contracts.
Traffic AnalyticsUsed by PLANet to save energy by adaptively dimming lights on empty highways, Telensa has the ability to capture traffic volume and mix data from any light pole. Leveraging the street light infrastructure cuts the cost, enabling granular data collection across the whole city.
Air QualityAir quality is a hyper-local issue but today’s monitoring stations only provide district-level data at best. By utilising street light infrastructure and networks, Telensa can provide the street-by-street data insights that cities need to pinpoint and address pollution problems.
DrainageDrains and gullies are vital to the safety and smooth running of the city, but there is no business case for adding a sensor to every drain. This combined sensor and data analytics solution protects against flooding and reduces operational costs at the same time.
