Toastmasters Are Really Cool!
It has certainly been an exciting
season for Toastmasters – in TAR
College and also all around Malaysia.
Starting off in our home turf, the word
on our Toastmasters club has been
spreading like wildfire in TAR College.
A lot of students, many from the
School of Business Studies are
interested to join our club.
Heads of Schools and also our
college Principal himself, Dr. Tan Chik
Heok has been showing strong
interest in our own members‟ growing
maturity, and are happy to be even
stronger advocates for promoting our
club to their own students.
However, the stigma still remains that
if one student joins TARC
Toastmasters, he or she will not be
able to join another society within
TAR College. Our vision is not to
promote allegiance to one society
alone – there is no clanship, there is
no competition, and there is no
separation between us and any other
societies.
We see ourselves as wanting to help
anyone who shows a keen interest to
improve their leadership skills –

practice, learn and spring up as
better leaders – and share what
you learn and bring to other
societies to help them grow as
well.
In Toastmasters, leaders are
made. In TARC Toastmasters, we
promote synergy between
students and societies. That‟s
definitely a „win-win‟ agreement!
On a much bigger scale, the
much anticipated District 51
Humorous Speech and Speech

on a very high note. Stephen
Fernando from MIHRM
Toastmasters and Palaniappa
Subramaniam from Silterra
Toastmasters, Kulim, Kedah,
emerged champions in the
respective contests.
Both TM Michele and I
participated in the Evaluation

was indeed a thrilling experience
for both of us!
Let‟s look forward to a better year
ahead!

President’s Message
October passed by with the successful
Tall Tales contestheld. Not only did my
mentee, TM Daryl clinch a second
spot, TM Michele and team also did a
wonderful job in organizing this unique
Tall Tales Contest.
Our teamwork brought success to the
contest. Prior to this event, everything
including selling tickets, promotion
and venue logistics has been mind-
boggling.
I really have to thanks DTM Siew
Chien, the humble yet positive woman
from Speakers Dream whom I really
admire. She was so positive right till the
end. She helped and contributed a lot
and pushed us through the difficulties
we faced in organizing this contest.
This event was also a testimony that
not only committee members are
doing things but members too. I would
like to congratulate TM Michele, TM
Jonathan and TM Zu Liang and of
course everyone in TARC Toastmasters
Club for all the hard work we have put
Toastmasters’
Tips & Tricks:
Commit to speak at every
meeting.
We join Toastmasters for a
reason – one of it is certainly not
to listen people speak! Plenty
of opportunities to speak; be it
prepared speeches, table
topics, or role-playing. We
improve by first opening our
mouths!
If you’re new, get a mentor.
If you’ve been around, be a
mentor.
Mentors help you learn the
ropes of giving speeches,
introduce you to other
members, and how the club
works. If you‟re experienced,
be a mentor and develop
lifetime relationships with your
mentees.
Visit other Toastmasters clubs.
Talk to a sea of unfamiliar faces,
and get comfortable by
pushing yourself beyond your
comfort zone. Get more
feedback from seasoned
members, and see your
network of friends expand.
Finished Your CC Manual?
That is not the end of your
journey in Toastmasters. It‟s just
your beginning to greater
heights! Consider doing
speeches from Advanced
Manuals – learn deeper speech
mechanics, get more
constructively critical feedback,
and see yourself progress
immediately!
Classes Get in Your Way for
Toastmasters Meetings?
If you are really interested to do
speeches but classes or other
commitments get in the way,
consider booking your speech
slots with other Toastmasters
clubs outside TAR College.

memorable event. Another
historic event by a baby club is
a feather under our cap.
I would like to also take this
opportunity to congratulate
our hardworking Vice President
of Education, Vincent Chow
for achieving both ACB and
CL awards in record time.
Soon, more great news to
come!
In Toastmasters, what keeps us
together makes us stronger. As
a wise man said, a leader can
lead the club, but without a
great team, the ship will not
sail to where we are today.

Universiti Malaya, Help University College and TAR College
Joint Toastmasters Meeting @ 30 September 2011
On this meeting, we welcomed with open arms,
members from the long established Universiti Malaya
Toastmasters Club, the highly energetic Help
University College Toastmasters Club and our
budding TAR College Toastmasters Club.
Together, we held perhaps the biggest joint student
clubs‟ meeting ever. There were more than 30
attendees – most notably the bright, young and
brilliant students, and also seasoned Toastmasters
whom you just can‟t miss - Area Governor W3 Kimmy
Foo, ACG Victor Ong and CC, ALB Chan Siew Peng,
both from Taman Indrahana Toastmasters Club.
As UM had just started the new semester, UM
Toastmasters was overjoyed to have a big influx of
new members. The meeting got off with a masterful
roast by UM-TMC‟s President, CC Heng Jing Yi who
introduced Toastmasters to new faces.
We then learned a few tips on “How to be an
Awesome Table Topics Speaker” from TM Jason Moi,
an extremely experienced Toastmaster who
frequently wins the annual International Speech and
Table Topics contests.
There were four speakers for the evening
presentations.
TM Wan Ping, a bubbly Toastmaster from UM,
presented her „CC#1 Icebreaker Speech‟. Other than
her self-compliments on her voluptuous figure, she
also passionately talked of her charity efforts, and
notedhow humorously clumsy she can be.
The next speaker is TM Chun Sam from our own TARC
TMC, who presented his „CC#4 How to Say It‟ speech
on “Life”. As general as it sounds, he divvied up some
inspiring lessons on how we can walk our „path of
diamonds‟ by thinking positively and thank our
blessings in life.
Moving on, TM Daryl Lim, also from TARC TMC, shared
techniques on mind-mapping in his CC#7 Get
Comfortable with Visual Aids.
There was also an interesting Humorous Speech
presented by ACB Vincent Liew from Help UC-TMC,
and his speech‟s evaluation was opened to the floor.
Vincent Liew must have been practicing and eager
to get as much feedback as possible. News got out
as he had just emerged champion in Division G‟s
Humorous Speech Contest!
It was absolutely an enjoyable meeting we had
together, and as our General Evaluator ACG Victor
Ong agree, saying “It was a Toastmasters evening of
sharing and learning.”

TOASTMASTER MEETING’S HIGHLIGHTS – 8 OCT 2011
Page 5
The Icebreakers and the Kung-Fu Lady:
(Top)TM Lim Kah Shoon, TM Choong How Sern, and TM Wong
Chee Sheng delivered their Icebreaker speeches; (Bottom) Jing
Yi presented her speech on “A Fact Finding Report”.
This meeting was held right after Malaysia
Day, and the college was really quiet – there
were no students on sight around the
campus. So it was pretty funny to see the
security guard having to check every
Toastmasters member who came for our
meeting! Our President, Eric Low was also
sweating professedly to get a security pass
for our special guests, CC Heng Jing Yi from
Universiti Malaya TMC and her friend.
It was a heart-felt moment to see our three
newest members – TM Lim Kah Shoon, TM
Choong How Sern and TM Wong Chee Sheng
presented their Icebreaker speeches. Kah
Shoon was a fantastic impromptu storyteller,
How Sern shared his burning love for cars he
would not be able to buy, and Chee Sheng
awed us with his powerful command of
English vocabulary.
Our members also witnessed first-hand an
Advanced Speech from CC Heng Jing Yi
who presented her speech on “Solar Energy
in Malaysia” as Speech#4: A Fact-Finding
Report from the „Speaking to Inform‟ manual.
The speech was indeed challenging to
attempt, but our mentor Richard Chia was
very constructively critical in his evaluation for
Jing Yi. Lots of learning here!
After nearly a one month hiatus due to a
sudden once-in-a-blue-moon examination for
Diploma students, we resumed our meetings
with much gusto on this day. We invited CC
Azmil Abdul Aziz from the roaring Tiger
Toastmasters Club, who was mildly disappointed
that the meeting was filled with men! No single
woman was on sight.
None the less, the meeting took off at a great
start with ACB Vincent Chow compared how life
is just like “A Cup of Coffee” in his Invocation.
TM Victor Tan shared his ambitions in his maiden
Icebreaker speech, hoping to get rid of the
“ants on his skin” after speaking in public for the
very first time, while TM Kevin procrastinated on
his speech “Procrastinate Procrastination” after
a 6 months break!
We also welcomed three eager guests who had
to choose between their morning sleep or
attending Toaastmasters – and they made the
wise choice. Great for them!
I Have a Dream:
TM Victor Tan presented his Icebreaker speech “Daydreamer”
during our Toastmasters meeting.
He was then evaluated by TM Tan Zu Liang.

TOASTMASTERS’ MEETING HIGHLIGHTS – 22 OCT 2011
Excited About Toastmasters: Very eager students delighted to start off their morning with our early
morning Toastmasters meeting.
We recorded our biggest attendance on this
meeting in just seven months after our chartered
date – There were nearly 40 of us filled the small
and cramped tutorial room!
30 eager Accountancy students from AFA and
AAC courses got the word out about our club,
and were very interested to attend our
Toastmasters meeting.
Some of the students are also distinctly
recognizable. They were visiting our club for the
second time after they were thoroughly
impressed by our previous meeting.
We also welcomed CC Sharon Yee from
MAICSA Toastmasters Club and ACB, CL Chow
Mun Yuen from Speakers‟ Dream Toastmasters
Club, who dropped by to become speech
evaluators.
On the fun part, we have witnessed five
speakers who presented a rich variety of
speeches from the Competent Communication
manual.
One of our guests, Suh Ping was also surprised
that there‟s much more to learn from the role-
players, notably the Ah Counter who has to pay
a lot of attention to listening.
After our meeting, all of our guests were
extremely happy and expressed their interest to
join our club.
CLIMBING UP THE EDUCATION AND LEADERSHIP TRACKS
Congratulations to our Charter President, Eric
Low for achieving his recognition as Competent
Leader, and also to Vincent Chow for achieving
both Advanced Communicator Bronze and
Competent Leader!
Eric Low‟s progress through the Competent
Leadership manual has been extraordinarily
steadfast – through his visits to numerous
Toastmasters clubs around KL and volunteering to
take up meeting roles, he achieved his CL award
in merely seven months! Normally, Toastmasters
members take up to two years!
Vincent Chow on the other hand, marked his
achievement with his 20th speech in just one and a
half year joining in Toastmasters, and he‟s on a
great run to achieve his next ACS sometime soon!

Liar Liar, Pants on Fire……….
Of course we didn‟t see anyone stripping down their
pants and fortunately we do not need to use the
back-up fire extinguishers, but we did have seven liars
in the contest who competed to be the most
convincing liar ever!
Seven liars from various Toastmasters clubs joined in
this annual Tall tales contest (a.k.a. The Lying
Competition) organized by Speakers Dream
toastmasters Club but this year TARC Toastmasters
Club is honored to be the co-organizer .
What we‟ve got from the liars are:
1) A dead man telling a story of himself in his own
funeral;
2) A sling shooter who claimed to have a big belly
because of his swollen organs after rolling down a hill;
3) A man who can earn 300% from buying shares due
to a spirit who can foresee the future;
4) A professor „wanna-be‟ who beat up another
professor- Professor L double E;
5) A Phang effect (Inspiration from Doppler Effect);
6) Apple without Steve - apparently Apple stole the
SIRI from him; and
7) Chinese Hakka dance (a departure from the New
Zealand‟s Haka dance).
All I can say that their lies were good and definitely
entertaining which made us laugh out loud. What
we heard were pieces of original stories or maybe I
should say a spin-off of reality as it was blatant truth
that all those were lies and yet it was their lies which
kept us in our seats listening attentively. Now, that‟s
the BEST part about tall tales.
All in all, it was a short and sweet session where Daryl
Lim got 2nd runner up (TARC), Lawrence Hoo 1st
runner up (Speakers‟ Dream) and Champion for Tall
Tales 2011- Mark Lee (Speakers‟ Dream). Kudos to all
the participants for their amazing lies!!
A very big THANK YOU to the crowd and role-players
(judges, timekeepers, SAAs and ballot counters)! The
contest can never go on without them. I hope that
next year, TARC Toastmaster will have the honor to
co-organize this event again and it will be bigger
and better!!
