HistorySeptember 10, 1879, brothers Ezra B. Lake, S. Wesley Lake, James E. Lake, and an associate, William H. Burrell, all Methodist clergymen, sailed to “Peck’s Beach.” With Rev. William B. Wood and Simon Lake (the brothers’ father, who mortgaged his farm for the initial purchase), they established a “Christian Seashore Resort,” the island city that became Ocean City, New Jersey.
The founders built roads, a boardwalk, schools, and even some amusement rides. They encouraged transportation, established city government, passed laws, and carefully made certain that every deed contained the prohibition of alcohol.
In 1880, the first tent meetings were held, with “at least 1,000 people” attending the revival that August. The name “Tabernacle” is borrowed from the Old Testament “tent” for worship.
In the 1890s, a more permanent Tabernacle was constructed and then improved in subsequent years. The present main auditorium, supported by the estates of Charles R. Stilwell and Charles F. & Helen Shriver Schilling, was dedicated in 1956. The “Family Room” (nursery) was completed in 1991. In 2005 the addition containing the Kull Noah’s Ark Nursery, the Boyce Adams Memorial Narthex, and the Marion A. Richardson Christian Education wing was dedicated. Summer 2008 saw the completion of the Kull Youth Center.
The Board of Trustees has guided the ministry of Ocean City Tabernacle through 130 years, with Presidents S. Wesley Lake, James E. Lake, W. Elwell Lake, Ralph G. Luff, William G. Luff, J. Robert Buck, and Richard J. Stanislaw.
Dr. Lake’s 1904 benediction still rings true: “That we all unite to keep Ocean City an Ideal City and may God’s Blessings be upon us and crown our efforts with marvelous success.”

MeMORiAL GiFTSThe Tabernacle remembers faithful leadership by naming facilities and program support. Over the 130 years, thousands of people have assured the continuation of this Christian witness in “America’s Greatest Family Resort.” Plaques, bricks, and inscriptions are on the grounds and in buildings to honor and express gratitude.
BeLL TOWeR The 13 bells (struck in 1893 for the 100th Anniversary of the U. S. Capitol Build-ing) traveled from Washington, DC, to 1st Methodist Church, Camden, NJ. The next owner, Cooper Hospital, gave the bells to Ocean City Tabernacle in 1997. More than 25 donors funded their restoration and installation at the Tabernacle. They were dedicated June 14, 1998, to honor and memorialize those whose names appear on the plaques.
GiFTS TO THe TABeRNACLeWeekly Offerings are received at each Sunday service and are used for program costs (honoraria, housing, and transpor-tation for speakers and musicians, and direct costs of the worship services and Sunday evening concerts). Thanks to all who contribute to make these weekly services possible. A separate Building Fund is used for capital expansion of the ministry. endowment Fund income provides ongoing repairs, maintenance, office, and staffing, and, only when necessary, supplements the weekly offerings for summer service expenses. Consider including the Tabernacle in your Will or in your planning of an income- producing annuity or trust. Gifts of an IRA or appreciated stock or property often result in tax savings. Call the Tabernacle office for third-party help with your charitable planning. Many tax advantages are available through various giving instruments.
