    Condition monitoring of rotating equipmentTheDiagnosticsforMachine(D4Machines)pack-agehasbeengreatlyimprovedwithtwomainareasofdevelopment:

    1.Introductionofanewdataacquisitionhard-waresolutionforonlineconditionmonitoringofcriticalrotatingmachinery.

    2.PilotinganewconceptofModularTool–mul-ti-sensordataacquisitiontoolforconditionmonitoringofLVrotatingequipment

    Ad(1)Theonlinesolutionforconditionmonitor-ingofcriticalmachineryreceivedanewhardwareplatformforsignalsacquisition.Provenandwidelytestedinvariousindustriesandapplication,theABBAC500based,highlyspecialiseddataacquis-itioncomponentshavebeenchosenandintegratedwiththeRDSsystem.WithitspilotdeploymentonboardPGSRamformHyperion,thenewconceptprovedtobefullyoperational.SimilartopreviousreleaseofD4Machinesconcept,measurementsfromAC500CMSsystemaretriggedbyRDSunderpreciselydefinedoperatingconditionstonormal-isethecalculationresults.Someoftherawreadings

    andendresultsareautomaticallysenttoourSer-viceCenterdatabasestofeedperiodicreports.Themainhighlightsofthenewreleaseareasfollows:

    • AC500ConditionMonitoringPackageconsist-ingofPM592CPUandFM502inputmoduleformnewRDSdataacquisitionunit

    • Thesystemfacilitatessignalscollectionfromupto16I/Ochannelsacquiredsimultaneouslywithmaximum50kHzsamplingfrequency

    • Inputchannelsre-configured‘on-the-fly’byRDSsystemstypicallyreadsignalsfromaccelero-meters(IEPE)and+/−10Vvoltagesignaloutfromcurrentclampsandvoltageprobes

    • Extendablewithstandard,16-channelAImod-uleforadditionalhard-wiredinputsignalssuchastemperatures

    • InstalledinsidetheRDSmarinecabinetformsaportfoliooffourdifferentoptionsfittedfornormalandextremeconditionofinstallation,dependingonthevibrationlevelofthemachineandtheinstallationlocationofthecabinet

    Ad(2)Year2016broughtsignificanteffortinfurtherproductdevelopmentandmarketintroductionofModularTool–acosteffectivehand-heldsolutionforRDSconditionmonitoringofLVrotatingequipment.Conceptualisedandresearchedinpreviousyears,thetoolwassuc-cessfullyintegratedwiththeRDSsystemin2016.AllanalyticsprovidedwiththetoolaredeployedintheonboardRDSsystemandlaunchedauto-maticallyeachtimeitisconnectedtoRDSPC.

    Afterfundamentalimprovementsandchangesintheback-endandserversidefunctionality,in2016theRDSsystemhasbeensubjecttomajormodificationsrelatedtoitspresentationlayer.Inordertofulfillrequirementsof‘commonABBMar-ineOnboardUserInterface’lookandfeel,atotallynewdesignoftheRDSmainviewwasintroduced.ABBMarinegraphicaldesignersworkedcloselywithsystemuserstocreateavisualdesignthatwillinheritthebestfunctionalitiesfromthepre-viousRDSreleaseanddeploythemaccordingtothenewphilosophyofuser-machineinteractionthatistobecommonforalltypesofonboardsystemsdeliveredfromABB(e.g.automation,voyageoptimisationanddiagnostics).Theiter-ativeprocessofdiscussions,specificationand

    incrementalimplementationallowedbuildingthenewRDSUIwithfocusonusersatisfactionandergonomics.Onthetechnologyside,communic-ationbetweendataserverandpresentationlayerhasbeenimproveddrasticallybyintroducingfastandultra-lightmessagingprotocol.Graphicalele-mentsarebasedonworld’sbestUIframeworkssuchasTelerikandSCICHART.MainfeaturesofnewRDSUserInterfaceareasfollows:

    • Consistentpresentationofinformationfromthelevelofequipmentstatusandanalyticsresultsthroughdetailedalarmandeventdescription,totheleveloftimeseriestrendsandhighfre-quencysampledsignaltransientsandloggers

    • Twodifferentwaysofaggregatinginformation,e.g.byassettypes(drives,motors,generators)andsystemtypes(e.g.portsidedrivetrain,powersystem,etc.)

    • StatusPanelwiththreelevelsofdrill-downnavigationallowsusertoquicklyassesstheconditionofmonitoredequipmentinrealtime

    • AlarmPanelandTrendPanelwithdetailedalarmlistandadvancedplottingcontrolsfacilitiesfastfaulttracing–acorefeatureforinternal,ABBusersofthesystem

    • Embeddedroles-basedmechanismgovernspresentationofcertaininformationonlytoprivilegedusers

    functionalitiesthatsimplifyandacceleratetheprocessofRDSsoftwareupgradeandreconfigur-ation.WithseveralyearsofexperienceonremotetroubleshootingandmaintenanceofRDS,whatprovedtobeparticularlytroublesomeforourITteamwere2typesofoperations:

    1.UpdateofsoftwaretypicallyrequiringtransferoftheentireRDSinstaller,reachingmorethan100MBinsize

    2.ReconfigurationofRDSusingconfigurationscreens

    Bothaboveactivities,perhapstrivialtaskswhenworkingonalocaldesktopcomputer,becomeachallengeiftheremoteconnectiontoonboardRDSstationsisusingaveryweaksatellitecon-nectionwithverylimitedbroadbandcapacity.Inthosecases,asingleclickofmousetochangetheconfigurationmaytakedozensofsecondsandthetransferofinstallationfiles,ifpossibleatall,maytakeseveraldays.

    ThefirstproblemwassolvedbychangingthereleaseandbuildphilosophyofRDS.Fromversion5.2,eachandeverymaintenanceorproductionreleaseofthesoftwarecomeswiththepairoffull.msiinstaller.msppatchfiles.Asaresult,inordertoupgradethesoftwareversionbetweenminorver-sions,transferofamaximum2MBfileontothesiteisneeded,or50timeslessthanpreviouslyrequired.

    New diagnostics functionalities in RDS 5.2ContinuousinnovationonexistingsolutionsandnewerproductsdeliveredtocustomersrequiresRDStoconstantlyadapttomarketneedsand

    providestate-of-the-artmonitoringsolutionsthatmatchequipmentinstalledonboardthemostsophisticatedvessels.AdditionaldriveshavebeenincorporatedintothealreadyexistingD4Propul-siondiagnosticspackage,includingACS1000,ACS800,ACS880andDCS800usedinDCgridprojects.Inordertoprovidebetterconditionmonitoringofcircuitbreakersandcontactors,anewclientlibrarybasedonIEC61850MMSpro-tocolisbeingdevelopedtointerfaceRELIONpro-tectionrelaysinstalledinMVswitchboards,whichwillsignificantlyincreasethevolumeofsignalsbeingrecorded,andwillenablefurtheradvancedanalytics.Forexample,monitoringthetotalnum-berofopening/closingcycles,loadofoperations,shortcircuitsandfaults,etc.,willhelptodeterm-inethelifeexpectancyofacircuitbreaker.

    Thankstothemodularapproachofstandard-isedmodulesconnectedtodifferentequipment,RDSisabletoexpanditsdiagnosticsportfolio

    andregularlyadapttobrand-newequipment.Withcurrently>45differentdiagnosticssolutionsinstalledinabout600automationPCs,ABBisabletoremotelymonitorapproximately100ves-selswithservicecontracts.Hardware and platform upgradeTheincreasingamountofassetsbeingmon-itored,andhigher-enddiagnosticssolutionswithonboardedgeanalytics,requiremoreresourcesfromtheautomationPCsandpanelPCsrunningRDSsoftware.Within2017,allcomputerswillbedeliveredwithanincreased8GBRAMmemory(previously4GBRAM)with64-bitWindows10operatingsystem.Theseupgradesnotonlycon-tributeforbetterperformanceanduserexper-ience,butalsoextendtheserviceabilityoftheequipmentandeliminatehardwareconstraintsthatcouldlimitfuturesoftwaredevelopmentactivities.
