I’ve spent much of the last few years leading on higher education and climate change campaigns at local and national level. Having worked as everything from McDonalds crew to flower salesman I know how easy it is for young people to be under-informed and exploited at work.

Why is this important? Between 2011-2018, our university rapidly increased its
international student numbers; from less than 10% to 42%. While the student body has become exponentially diverse,
other structures have not. Our University, Students’ Union and their facilities and services are outdated, irrelevant and
unrepresentative of the specific needs of its diverse student body.
International Students have been treated as cash cows by our university for too long. Its high time that we feel and behave like a truly international university.
We demand respect, equity, diversity, inclusion, tailored support, facilities, employment opportunities and a sense of belonging.

The biggest hurdles that international students experience are issues related to bureaucracy, funding, and isolation. These are the aspects I will focus on to improve your experience. And I hope you will join me

Being an international student is definitely not easy. Leaving your home behind to pursue your education is definitely a brave act that should be respected.
Let’s be honest: international students are a great source of income, not just for Sussex, but for all UK Universities. It’s time the University uses the extra income they are getting from us to make our experience easier.

As your SSE officer, my priority will be mobilising student groups to fight against these cuts. This
means creating a closer community within student activities, increasing participation with events, and
giving students easy access to information about how their SU works.
I’ve been at Sussex for four years, and it’s my experience with sports and societies that have made my time here special. Currently, the university is trying to cut SU funding. This would be devastating for sports clubs that are already oversubscribed, and societies that have had to limit their activities because of a lack of finance.

A Trustee is there to make sure that our Students’ Union is run in a financially secure way, that benefits students and enriches
our University experience. A Trustee should be held accountable by the students just as the Trustee should hold
the Students’ Union to account. When university management says no, we as a union should have the courage to say YES.
You’d be forgiven for not knowing that the University of Sussex Student Union had Trustee roles, let alone feeling informed enough to elect somebody you’ve likely never met to the position.

I am passionate about environmental and social justice and I help to organise the Youth Strike for Climate in
Brighton which every month sees thousands of students take to the streets to demand urgent action on climate
change. I am also heavily involved with Decolonise Sussex and the co-producing the curriculum programme, which I
want to be a big part of what the Students’ Union does.
I spend much of my time at Sussex being involved with many student societies and work hard to support student efforts in changing things for the better.

Hi, I’m Matthew. As an experienced charity trustee, I want to ensure that the Student Union is run responsibly through good governance, sound financial management and with all the students’ interest at its heart. This is my pledge to you and why I am standing as a Student Trustee.

The last year has highlighted the continual challenges we face, and brought me face-to-face with policy and
regulations which inhibit dynamic adaption of the SU. Sitting on the board will allow me to amplify your voices at
the table where student wellbeing is juggled with constitution, financial health, and the intricacies of Union
running.
As a student trustee, I will be an interface between students and the Union Board in a future-focused and legal sphere of decision making for the SU. As Woman's Officer for the last year I have shown my unquestionable passion for the SU, and the student body from which it is composed.
