DEFINITION OF SUPERLATIVE
The form of an adjective indicating the greatest degree of the quality that the adjective describes
Best is the superlative form of good ; fastest is the superlative form of fast ; most charming is the superlative form
of charming. The usual superlative takes the ending -est.
EXAMPLES
Michael is the oldest boy at the party.
Katie wore the prettiest dress she owned.
John is the smartest boy in his class.
DEFINITION OF COMPARATIVES
The Comparative is the form of an adjective or adverb used to compare two things. To create a comparative, in short adjectives add
-er to the end, and longer ones usemore before the adjective
EXAMPLES Stella is a smaller dog than Bruno so she usually loses the fight over dog treats. (Stella is compared to Bruno.)
Trey is more handsome than any movie star I’ve ever seen. (Trey is compared to a
movie star.)
Venus is brighter than Pluto.
