TheRequirement:Injectingseawaterintoreservoirsormaintenanceoreservoirpressureandincreasedoilrecovery(IOR)isalongestablishedandcommonpractice.Treatmentothewaterbeoreinjectionishoweveressentialtoavoidpluggingandsouringothereservoir.Thetreatedseawaterisinjectedintothemaineldreservoirthroughplatorm-basedinjectionwells,orcanbetransported

outtosubseainjectionwellsthroughlongfowlines.Whilethisapproachhasservedtheindustryormanyyears,itdoesimposesomechallenges,mainlyimplicationsassociatedwithbeingabletoeectivelydrainaeld.

AsanalternativesolutiontoenhanceIORandmaximiseproduction,SWIThasbeenunderdevelopmentandtestingsince2003.SincethenithasbeenawardedourpatentsandwonaninnovationawardatONSin2006.

Aspartoitscontinueddevelopment,ullscalesubseapilotplanttrialswererequiredandITFworkedincollaborationwithWellProcessingtosecureindustryundingromseveralinternationaloilcompaniesoreldtrialling.ThisalsobroughtabouttheopportunitytosecureurtherundsromDEMO2000andmarked

thersttimethatthetwobodieshaveworkedinconjunctiontosecuresupportoraJointIndustryProject(JIP).

TheSolution:The18monthlongSWITJIPwaslaunchedinDecember2008withsupportromourmajoroilandgasoperatorsandDEMO2000.Thetechnologyallowsorsigniicantreductioninsolidscontent,providestwoindependentmethodsor‘online’sterilisationoseawater–electro-chlorinationandanewmethodorsterilisationviahydroxylradicalgeneration-andalsoincludessystemsterilisation.

TheMethod:WellProcessingdevelopedtheSWITtechnologytoallowreservoirengineersthereedomtothinkoutsidethebox.Becauseatopsideswatertreatmentandinjectionplantisreliantonthedatagatheredrominitialappraisalwellinormation,itmaybeinadequateortheeldsneedsoveritsentirelietime.

SWITgivesreedomochoicewithrespecttothenumberandlocationoinjectionwells–itallowsorinjectionoasmuchtreatedseawaterasrequired,whererequired–withouttypicalhostplatormrestrictions.Thistechnologyessentiallyallowsthedecisiononwaterinjectionneedstobedelayeduntilthereservoirisupandrunningbecauseoperatorscanseehowareservoirreactsthenprovidewaterinjectionasrequiredratherthanhavingtoestimateuturerequirementsanddesignthemintotheplatormattheoutset.

Implementation:TherstphaseotheSWITproject,engineeringdesignandabrication,isnownearingcompletionandthepilotplantisduetobetransportedtoNIVA’smarineresearchcentreinOslojordorsubsea

testing.Onceproven,thesubseawatertreatmentsystemwillbecombinedwithexistingsubseawaterinjectionpumpingequipment.

TheOutcomes:SWITexpandsthechoicesavailabletooperatorsandallowsorinjectionoasmuchtreatedseawaterasrequired,whererequired–withouttherestictionsandlimitationsassociatedwithusingahostplatorm.ThetechnologyisbeingcontinuallydevelopedandotherapplicationsorSWITincludeboostingpressureinolderreservoirsandthedevelopmentosatelliteeldsthatwouldotherwisebeuneconomical.

Well Processing’s innovative subsea water injectiontreatment (SWIT) system is undergoing full-scalepilot plant trials thanks to support from ITF andNorway’s DEMO 2000 initiative. SWIT provides analternative to topsides seawater treatment by doingeverything on the seabed. The system offers a subsea

seawater treatment solution to add to existingsubsea pumping and christmas tree technology.
