O nTuesday,May14,2013,CityCollege FortLauderdalestudentsparticipated inacollaborativescenariothatbeganwhenEMSrespondedtoanaccidentandendedinacourtroom.Theactivity,whichwaspresentedaspartofFriendsandFamilyDay,involvedeverydepartmentontheFortLauderdalecampus. “Thiswasagreatopportunityforstudentstogettoseeandappreciatewhatotherstudentsarelearning,”saidDr.EmilioCastaneda,theAlliedHealthdepartmentchair.“Itwasnicetoseethedepartmentsworkingtogether.”
Thescenarioinvolvedamalepatientwhofellfromthesecondfloorbalconyandsustainedabrokenankleandinternalbleedingasaresultofthefall.EMSstudentsJason Doherty, Mary Boecklerand Jose Manriquewerethefirstonthescene.Theyassessedthevictim,puthimonastretcherandtransportedhimtothe“hospital,”whereateamofnurseswerewaiting. Afterdeterminingthepatienthadarupturedspleen,hewasmovedtotheORwhereanesthesiologyandsurgicaltechnologystudentsassistedwithanesthetizing,followed
Student Collaborative Scenariobyasurgerytoremovethespleen.Acastwasalsoplacedonthefracturedleg. Eveningstudentscontinuedwiththescenario.TheBusinessDepartmentconductedahumanresourcesinvestigationtodetermineifthemanwasentitledtoworkers’compensation.Privateinvestigatingstudentsinvestigatedtheaccidentandeventsleadinguptotheaccident,andtheentireactivityculminatedwithamocktrialputonbylegalassistingstudents.Theentireprocesswasreportedonbythebroadcastingdepartment.
“Wewerereallyhappywiththeoutcome,”saidCastaneda.“Studentsappreciatedthisauthenticlearningexperience.”

t’snosurprisetobroadcastingstudents thattheBroadcastingClubisoneof themostpopularontheFortLauderdalecampus.Bestknownforfieldtripsthathighlightcareersintelevisionandradio,theBroadcastingCluboffersstudentsanopportunitytoseewhatiswaitingforthemupongraduation.PasttripshavetakenstudentstoNewYorkCity,LasVegas,Atlanta,TampaandOrlando,butstudentswereespeciallyexcitedforthisyear’striptoWashington,D.C.TwentyluckystudentswerecarefullyselectedbasedonacademicandsocialstandingforthetripwhichlastedfromApril10-13. Afterweeksofwaiting,studentsmetattheFortLauderdaleInternationalAirportearlyinthemorningonApril10th.AfterarrivinginBaltimore,Maryland,studentsweretransportedtotheirhotelinLanham,wheretheyhadtheirfirstworkshop.BroadcastingClubmembersNatasha DariusandCheryl Tysonpresentedonthetopicsofsettingpersonalgoalsandcommunicatingforsuccess. Ontheseconddayofthetrip,studentstraveledtoanABCaffiliateinWashington,D.C.,wheretheyweremetbytourfacilitatorandDirectorofPublicAffairs,Abbey Fenton.Studentswereinaweastheywereledtotheheartofthestation—thenewsassignmentdesk.
Seeingthenewsanchor’schairwasanadrenalinerushforseveralofthestudentsandmanyaskedtotakepicturessittinginthechair.Next,studentsweretakentothe

AsiftheTVstationwasn’texcitingenough,studentsnextheadedtotheSmithsonianwheretheyspenttherestoftheafternoonattheNational Air and Space Museum.HeretheysaweverythingfromAmeliaEarhart’splanetotheWrightBrothers’inventiontoanimmersiveexhibitabouttheSolarSystem. DaythreebeganatCBSRadioinLanham,Maryland.WPGC DirectorofCommunityAffairsJustine Lovegavestudentsatourofthebuilding,whichhousessixstations.Studentswerealsotreatedtoameetandgreetwithseveralradiopersonalities,allofwhomstressedtheimportanceofsecuringaninternship.StudentswereexcitedtoseethattheequipmentusedatWPGCisthesameastheequipmenttheyareusingatCityCollege.TheNewseum,amuseumdisplayingartifactsfrommanyoftheworld’stopnewsstories,wasnextontheagenda.Attimes,thetour,whichfeaturedstoriesfromJFK’sassassination,thebombingofachurchinBirmingham,Alabamathatkilledfourlittlegirls,andSeptember11,becameemotional.OtheritemsofinterestatthemuseumincludedartifactsfromtheUnibomber’scabinandcellphonesrecoveredfromtheWorldTradeCenterrubble. StudentsleftWashington,D.C.onApril13,moreenergizedandmotivatedthaneverbefore.Theyleftwithsouvenirs,photos,participationcertificatesandmemories,butnothingmoreimportantthanthelessonstheylearnedandthefriendshipstheyformed.

T heCityCollegeFortLauderdaleEMSCompetitionTeam participatedintheALS/BLSCompetitionheldduringthe17th AnnualFirstThereFirstCareConferenceattheHardRockHotelandCasinoinHollywood,FloridaonApril26,2013.Theteam,whichconsistedofJason Doherty,Mary BoecklerandJose Manrique,representedCityCollegewithmaturity,skill,knowledgeandprideastheycompetedagainst13otherteams. “Thecompetitionwasahugesuccessonmanylevels,”saidAnthonyBitgood,EMSDepartmentChair.“TheCityCollegeteamhadverylittletimetoprepareandtrain,butthatdidn’tkeepthemfromdoingwell.” Whiletherecentcompetitionwasafirstfortheteam,itwon’tbethelast. “Weareexcitedtoannouncethatthisteamwillcontinuetocompeteonastateandnationallevel,”Bitgoodsaid.“I’mveryproudofthesestudents.”

Hollywood Campus Adds Graduates to City College Alumni Pool
S iterria Nelson,amemberofCity CollegeHollywood’sInauguralClass, isjoiningtheschool’sGraduatingClassof2013. In2011NelsonjoinedthefirstgroupofstudentsatCityCollege’sbrandnewHollywoodCampus.Shehadlongconsideredjoiningthemedicalfieldduetomedicalissuesshesufferedasachild.Onceadmitted,NelsondecidedtospecializeinASAH-MAMedicalAssisting. Inanemotionalgoodbyelettertoherbelovedcampus,NelsonthankedeveryonefromherAdmissionsRepresentativeandtheFrontDeskreceptionisttoeverysingleoneofher
afraidofneedlesanymore.” AconfidentNelsonleavesCityCollegewithaloftynewgoal:aBAinHealthCareAdministration.HollywoodCampuswishesSiterriaNelsonluckasshetravelstowardsnewhorizons!

StudentsatCityCollege’sMiamicampusrecentlyreceivedmoneymanagementandstudentsuccessinformation.Researchhasshownthatsubjectsstudentsareinterestedinincludeinvestingforthefuture,gettingaheadfinanciallyaftergraduation,avoidingcreditproblems,andbudgeting.Andresearchalsoshowsthatthenumberonereasonstudentsleaveschoolbeforegettingtheirdegreesisfinances. EstablishingadebtmanagementplanthatincludesfinancialliteracyeducationisanimportantwaytopromotedefaultpreventionandstudentsuccessatCityCollege.Youdon’thavetogoall-outwhenembarkingonplansforfinancialliteracyandstudentsuccess.Infact,startingsmallandthen,inthefuture,buildingonyourinitialsuccessestocreateabroaderplanisabetterwaytogo. I nApril,theAltamonteSpringcampusheldaCommunityHealthandJobFair. ThiseventwasnotonlytointroduceCityCollegestudentstoemployers,but alsotoinvitethecommunityinsideCityCollegetoseewhatweareallabout.TheEMSandAlliedHealthstudentsperformedfreebloodpressurechecksandheartratechecksonstudents,faculty,andneighborhoodguests.EMSstudentssetupa“HeartBeanBagToss”for$2atrytoraisedonationsforThe American Heart Association.ThehealthfairwasalsosponsoredbyL.A. Fitness, Chick-fil-A, CentraCare, ARCpoint Labs,andTranslife.EmployersincludedSenior Helpers, Devereux, L.A. Miami Students Surge Into The Future Operating Room ManyexpertsinthefieldofSurgicalTechnologybelievethatinthenearfuture,robotswillbeabletodiagnoseandsurgicallyrepairconditionswithouthumaninteraction.Beforethiscanbeachieved,manylevelsofroboticsmustbemastered.However,surgicaltechnologistsarequicklyapproachingthoseveryheights. Recently,studentsfromCityCollege’sMiamicampushadtheopportunitytoassistinarobotic-assistedlaparoscopicprostatectomy-essentially,thesurgicalremovalofaprostate–atMercy HospitalinMiami.“Theexperience,”saysRandy Docks,“givesourstudentsanideaofwhattoexpectinanoperatingroomaswellasaglimpseofhowthelatesttechnologyisbeingintegratedintothefieldofsurgicaltechnology.Italsomakesthemmoremarketableamongstthoseenteringthefield.”Thestudentswere“scrubbedin”onasurgicalprocedureutilizingtheda Vinci robotandassistedthesurgicalteambypassinginstruments,preparingmedications,andkeepingeverythingorganized. ThedaVincisurgicalsystemallowsformoreprecise,moreaccuratesurgeriesto
beperformedthroughsmallerincisions.Thedeviceconsistsofaroboticarm(amanipulator)andasurgeon’sworkstation.TheadvantagesofthedaVinciforthepatientmayincludeshorterhospitalstays,lesspain,lowriskofinfection,lessbloodloss,fewertransfusions,lessscarring,fasterrecovery,andaquickreturntonormalactivities. Withoutquestion,theoperatingroomofthefuturewillbeamuchdifferentplacethanitistoday.Dockssays,“Inthefuture,
capablesurgeonswillperformtelesurgery,meaningthatasurgeoninLosAngelescouldbecalledtoperformsurgeriesinSpainwithoutactuallybeingthere.”Assuch,surgicaltechnologistswillneedtobefamiliarwithsuchthingsasrobotics,electronics,software,andbiometrics,amongotherthings.Thestudents’experienceatMercyHospitalissuretobeamemorable,ever-lastinglearningexperiencethathasexposedthemtothefutureofoperatingprocedures.

S omeonerecentlygavemeaDVDon “The 9 Steps to Achieve Any Goal” byamannamedBill Bartmann.IhadneverheardofBartmannbeforesoIdidalittleresearchonhimanddiscoveredthatheissomeonewhohasachievedandreachedseveralsignificantgoalsinhislife.SoIdecidedtopopitintheDVDtohearwhathehadtosay. Bartmannpointsoutthatyoulearnmorefrommistakesthanyoudofromyoursuccesses,andthesecretofsuccesslieswithinyourmistakes.Inordertobesuccessful,youhavetobewillingtotakerisksandmakemistakes Peopleareafraidtotakerisksbecausetheythinktheyaregoingtofail.Mostpeoplefailbecausetheyworryaboutwhatotherpeoplethinkofthem. Therealsecrettosuccessistofindwaystoraiseorincreaseyourself-esteem,becauseifyouraiseyourself-esteem,youwillbelessconcernedaboutwhatotherpeoplethinkaboutyou.Ifyou’relessconcernedaboutwhatpeoplethinkofyou,youwillbemorewillingtotakerisks.Andifyou’rewillingtotakerisks,youwillmathematicallyincreaseyourchancetosucceed. Billexplainsthateachsteptoachieveanygoalisequallyimportant.Itdoesn’tmatteryourgoal;toloseweight,stopsmoking,getabetterjob,finishcollege,etc.Followingthese9stepswillhelpyougetthere.
1. Make sure the goal you set is, in fact, your goal. Besurethatthisgoalyouarepursuingissomethingyouwant,notwhatsomeoneelsewantsforyou.Thesaddestcommentaryinlifeistohaveworked,chased,andspentyourtimedoingsomethingyoudon’tevenlike.Spendserioustimethinkingonwhatitisthatyoureallywanttoachieve.
2. Use the word Promise, not Goal. Goalsareusuallydefinedasthingsyoutrytodoandmostpeopledonotalwaysachievethegoalstheyattempt.Changethewayyouspeaktoyourbrain,usethewordPromise!Whenyoupromisesomething,youhavemoreintentionandreasonstokeepthatPromise.
3. Clearly Identity Your Promise.Don’tbevaguebysayingsomethinglike,“Iwanttobesuccessful”.Specifyhowsuccessful.Whatdoessuccessfulmeanorlooklike
