What is the issue? What is the issue?
a) Transitional and coastal stations reported under Eionet data collection
b) Transitional and coastal stations reported under the Water Framework Directive
Question:In how far are we able to map the 2 sets of stations reported under a) and b) in order to ensure consistency between delivered stations and monitoring data?

Mapping of Coastal and Transitional Mapping of Coastal and Transitional stationsstations
Mapping technique Mapping technique
Visual Basic script:
•That match each station in one station table (WFD) with the best closest matching station in a second station table (e.g. EIONET• Calculates the distance between the stations in this match
Mapping WFD CT stations Mapping WFD CT stations against EIONET CT stationsagainst EIONET CT stations
• Only 15 stations maps exactly
•Using a 1 km range 1336 WFD stations gets a match in the EIONET station table
• Some stations marked as EIONET stations in WFD do not match any station
Mapping WFD CT stations against Mapping WFD CT stations against ICES Station dictionary (OSPAR) ICES Station dictionary (OSPAR) stationsstations
• Only 2 stations maps exactly
•Using a 1 km range 319 WFD stations gets a match in the Station dictionary table
The ideal situationThe ideal situation
A common list of stations with:
• Nominal coordinates and unique names • Information on which monitoring programme these stations belongs to (e.g. stations in Kattegat belongs often to both OSPAR and HELCOM, and maybe also to WFD)• Information on the acceptable geographic range around these station (in case the nominal coordinates are not used)
Question to NRCsQuestion to NRCs
If a national overview of “station-belonging” (to, e.g., the WFD, EIONET, OSPAR, HELCOM, or MEDPOL) exists for your country, what are the default/nominal positions and the accepted range of positions for those stations? (If e.g. the default position is x longitude and y latitude, is the actual coordinate of x ± 0.1 and y ± 0.1 acceptable for this station?).
