The Position of Children
Over the years of raising children, and now on occasion caring for grandchildren, the methods of
encouraging good behavior are deeply ingrained. “If you don’t stop teasing your sister I’m going to send
you to your room.” “If you eat all of your dinner, you can have a cookie.” Although obviously much
more complicated than that, we essentially teach and learn through systems of reward and punishment.
Behavioral psychologists teach that positive and negative consequences are the primary drivers of
people’s actions.
However, animals learn using these same techniques. What makes man different is the intelligence to
understand good and evil. With this we are also offered the grace to do good works simply for the sake
of good. Sadly, we are also able to refuse God’s grace and perform evil acts out of a desire to be evil.
Or, in less serious ways we sometimes find ourselves drawn away from goodness by a seemingly endless
variety of temptations.
Perhaps the very thing that displays God’s work in man the best are the examples of the many saints who
performed extraordinary acts of goodness in the midst of miserably negative consequences that would
more typically push a person in the opposite direction. Of course, the supreme example hangs upon the
cross; the infinite goodness of salvation delivered through the suffering of God Himself.
Each month my wife and I gather for the Children’s Rosary Prayer Group in the Adoration Chapel. After
a child recites a decade of the rosary we ask if they would like to place a flower at Mary’s feet. When we
complete the rosary we sing a closing song and then collect the flowers. The children take them home to
their mother. After our last prayer group, as we were preparing to leave, my grandson Evan, clutching a
handful of flowers, noticed two women praying in the chapel and asked if he could give each of them a
flower. He wasn’t prompted to do it. There was no reward or punishment involved. It was simply the
grace of God in the heart of a child deciding that giving a flower is good.
Although children can behave in ways that are certainly selfish and hurtful towards others, it sometimes
seems that the heart of a child moves more easily to kindness. Young and less tarnished, a child’s heart
in most cases has not been hardened. Jesus taught us to be as children. And because of His “son-ship”
we are invited to be God’s children too.
In the Act of Contrition we say these words, “. . . I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of heaven
and the pains of hell . . .” That’s the reward and punishment aspect. But we also say, “. . . but most of
all because they offend Thee, my God, Who are all good and deserving of all my love.” That statement
proclaims our inner desire to be good for the sake of goodness.
“If we turn away from evil out of fear of punishment, we are in the position of slaves. If we pursue the
enticement of wages . . . we resemble mercenaries. Finally if we obey for the sake of the good itself and
out of love for him who commands . . . we are in the position of children.” – St. Basil
EVANGELISM IN ACTION: Get in the position of a child, and embrace goodness for the sake of
God.

“I have a prayer request. There's a lady I've known for-ever. She's very sick. On top of that, she's being abused by those to whom she has given everything. Just breaks my
heart. Seems there's nothing I can do alone. But maybe, if we join in and lift her up together
God will heal her. She's well over 200 years old, but way too young to die. Her
name is AMERICA ... and I love her.”
