FYI: November 27, 2016 – 1st Sunday of Advent
This weekend the Church begins a new church year. The Scriptural Readings will be taken from Cycle A for Sundays. Weekday Readings will come from Year I. During the 4:00 p.m. Vigil Mass the Advent Wreath will be blessed and the first candle of the wreath will be lit. During the 10:00 a.m. Choir Mass those men and women involved in the RCIA will be formally welcomed into the process. Liturgical Calendars for 2017 will be available in the narthex and the exits of the Church. I would also like to remind everyone that this year, our Advent Penance Service will be held on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 beginning at 6:30 p.m. There will be a brief prayer service followed by individual confessions. Confessors will be available to hear Confessions in English, Spanish, Polish, Italian and French. When one thinks of a new year, one also thinks about resolutions. A resolution is a purposeful thought used to endeavor one to attain a more meaningful purpose or end. One’s resolution might center on improving one’s health. Another might be centered on learning something new. Still others might resolve to remove something in one’s life that is not beneficial. Unfortunately, many resolutions fall by the wayside because they entail too much work or effort and we find ourselves falling into old patterns of attitude or behavior. I would like to suggest that during this Advent all of us take on some meaningful and beneficial spiritual resolutions. In the Second Reading of today’s Mass, St. Paul reminds the Church at Rome, ‘that now is the time, now is the hour for you to awake from sleep for our salvation is near at hand.’ Many of you have remarked to me that you enjoy hearing the admonition I give at the end of each homily and FYI, “While we have time, let us do good.” But sometimes I wonder how many of us take those words and the words of St. Paul’s admonition today to heart. Many go about their business believing they have plenty of time to improve their spiritual lives, but yet, the time is never right to do it. People come up with excuses all the time. Some, I’m sorry to say have become complacent or even worse arrogant in their spiritual lives. Even small changes can go a long way in our progress.
I would like to suggest some small endeavors as resolutions:
Read ahead of time the Scriptures for the Sunday Liturgy. Pretend the Readings are just for you. What are they trying to say to you.
Get to Mass or Services on time. There are some who are going to be late for their own funerals.
Put yourself in a state of mind for what you are about to do, namely worshipping God.
Turn off your cell-phone or put it on silent mode. (If I had my way, every time a cell phone rings, I’d throw it into the Baptismal font.)
Avoid chatting and talking to your neighbor before Mass. You can always chat after Mass.
Participate in the Mass fully. In other words, sing the hymns and Mass parts. Listen attentively to the Readings and homily. (Reading the bulletin during the Readings and the homily is not only distracting but disrespectful to the reader and/or homilist. I’ve been known to stop a homily or add ten minutes on to it, just in spite.)
Volunteer for the various ministries of the church and contribute to the support of the Church. Tithing is a wonderful way to contribute. But your physical help is also much appreciated.
Invite your family and friends to join you for Mass here at St. Mark’s. Be a PR person for the Parish.
Stay until the end of Mass. (Some people have no idea that Mass begins and ends with the Sign of the Cross.)
Make use of the Sacrament of Reconciliation often. During the week there are five opportunities: Tues and Thurs morning after Mass; Saturday morning after Mass; Saturday afternoon from 3:00-3:45 p.m. and by appointment.
Examine your conscience daily. Brothers and Sisters, while we have time, let us do good. ~Fr.Dan
