SOUNDS OF THE SEASON 2019
“There’s no place like Home for the holidays.”
DIRECTOR’S NOTEThe holidays are easily my favorite time of the year. But it’s a fine line between so much and too much. And then there’s the holiday music, 24/7 from November to January. By this week you wonder if you’re up for yet another rendition of anything with snow, lights, bells, or sleighs.
Until suddenly, you hear something that reminds you of how sacred and magical this time of year is for so many, no matter who we gather with or where. It’s the kind of transformative moment that stops time for a few precious, peaceful moments and carries you for days. It reminds you of what is easy to forget amid all the bustle of the season – warmth, community, beauty, the chance to just be.
This evening, we hope to do that for you, slow time down for a couple of hours with wonderful music. And remind you of how much there is to love in familiar titles – Gloria, Eight Days of Light, Noel, O Come All Ye Faithful – that can still surprise you. This is music that doesn’t sound like what we think it’s going to be, and can make us stop and truly listen, and remind us just how much there is to celebrate this time of year.
Tonight we’re pleased to welcome our guests, The Monumental Brass Quintet. As a music educator, and the artistic director of a teaching choir, I am thrilled to have my own students from Robinson Secondary School joining us. And I am especially pleased to count several former students on the stage tonight, both in VCS’ ranks and among our guest percussionists. Music is one of the first languages we learn as human beings, and a life-long vocation that enriches us immeasurably.
But there is no concert without an audience. Tonight, you probably had a dozen choices. Thank you for choosing to spend your time with us. We hope you enjoy hearing us as much as we love singing for you. And we hope you come back again, and again. Warmly,
Mike Horanski

CANDLELIGHT CAROLHow do you capture the wind on the water? How do you count all the stars in the sky?How can you measure the love of a mother,Or how can you write down a baby’s first cry? Candlelight, angel light, firelight and star-glowShine on his cradle till breaking of dawn.Gloria, gloria in excelsis Deo!Angels are singing; the Christ child is born.
Shepherds and wise men will kneel and adore him, Seraphim round him their vigil will keep;Nations proclaim him their Lord and their Savior,But Mary will hold him and sing him to sleep.
Find him at Bethlehem laid in a manger: Christ our Redeemer asleep in the hay,Godhead incarnate and hope of salvation: A child with his mother that first Christmas Day.
On this day, children sing, full of joy, earth shall ring.Love has come to everything. Sing we alleluia!Sing we alleluia!
LYRICS
(CANDLELIGHT CAROL Continued) Ideo, Gloria in excelsis Deo.Gloria! Lift your voice, sing noel.Let the glad tidings swell.Strike the harp, ring the bell.Glory in the highest.Glory in the highest.

NOELThe first Noel the angel did saywas to certain poor shepherds in fields where they lay. In fields where they lay keeping their sheepon a cold winter’s night that was so deep. Noel, noel, noel, noelBorn is the King of Israel.
They looked up and saw a starshining in the East beyond them far, and to the Earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night. Noel, noel, noel, noelBorn is the King of Israel.

We’re dashing through the snow in a one-horse open sleigh.O’er the fields we go, laughing all the way.Hey, hey, hey, Hey, hey, hey, hey.

A day or two ago I thought I’d take a ride. And soon Miss Fanny Bright was seated by my side. The horse was lean and lank.Misfortune seemed his lot.He got into a drifting bank and then we got upsot. Upsot?
