UNION MAKE FORCE
Alliances coexist with man practically of its own origins, at any
level and nature. But there is no doubt that the evolution of the
modern world and social interaction have made the pacts have
gained prominence when planning a new advance, a desired
progress and the overcoming of an obstacle.
Great projects with great results are built as a team. The obligatory
question to successful entrepreneurs about the formula for their
achievements raises an almost unanimous answer: the team.
Because group strength is achieved through work and effort but,
above all, with the conviction that the contribution of virtues and
individual excellence to achieve the triumph of the whole is what
ultimately leads us on the road to success.
And precisely in the most difficult moments, in the most
controversial stages or crisis situations, is when more
opportunities arise to unite wills and build strength. Sotogrande
this summer is the perfect example of this premise. The polo and
golf sector, the two great sporting and economic benchmarks
of the municipality, come together to show the quality and
level that, despite the circumstances, are maintained in each
club and in each field. Meanwhile, other entities such as Puerto
Sotogrande are also joining an ambitious project in support of
training, research, sustainability and the blue economy.
It is not a time for individualism, but for teaming up and playing
the summer game of 2021 together.

hotel SO/Sotogrande.

The opening of the golf circuit is the long-awaited culmination of a combined effort to make Sotogrande an
internationally recognised destination
BY REYES SEIJAS · PHOTOS SGPLUS
Creating a destination with the Sotogrande Golf Challenge
The news about the Sotogrande Golf
Challenge in San Roque, which was
announced at the end of May, came as a
surprise not only to fans of golf but also
to those closely involved with the sport
and the business community. The amateur
golf circuit, made up of seven courses was
created with the support of the City Council
with the aim of revitalising tourism and
sports activities in the area.
To find out how the tournament came to
be, the thoughts of its promoters and
the impact it will have on Sotogrande,
SGplus has brought together some of the
people who made it happen for the latest
edition of Meetings in d´Alicia. Indeed we
have been joined by almost everybody
involved in bringing about this union of
Sanroquenian golf clubs supported by the
City Council. Among them the Councillor
for Tourism, Ana Ruiz, Javier Jiménez
Casquet (Alcaidesa), Óscar Checa (La
Reserva), Ignacio Sánchez (La Cañada),
Ricardo Andrades (Almenara), Silvia
Serrano (Valderrama) and Lidia Muñoz
(San Roque Club).
Brought together by golf, in a shared
desire that this new event be a success and
generate further interest, the first question
to ask was obvious. The Sotogrande Golf
Challenge will support the tourism and
sports sectors, which have been suffering
the effects of a year heavily impacted by
the pandemic, so we wanted to know how
everyone had gotten through it.
Javier Jiménez Casquet opened the floor
by recalling how hard the year has been
for everyone and especially for businesses.
While citing the possibility of a rebound this
summer, he said, “Historically summer is our
low season, but last year it was the highest
and we expect exactly the same to happen
this year.” His sights are once again set
on national tourism and he acknowledged
the presence of international tourists,
especially from France and Belgium, which
is beginning to have an impact.
According to Silvia Serrano, the main
drawback has been the fact that “the
members could not come because their
medical insurance did not cover them if
they were in Spain”. So Valderrama has
taken the opportunity to carry out some
renovations in the clubhouse and they are
looking forward to attracting visitors who
do not usually come in summer.
Óscar Checa outlined La Reserva’s desire
to welcome back members whom they had
not seen in almost two years, while alluding
to the surprising influx seen last summer.
“This shows that Sotogrande is attracting
interest from people as a place in which to
spend their free time. We are starting the
season with the Sotogrande Golf Challenge,
which will kick off a great summer with high
hopes.”
Looking back over past year, Lidia stated
that a good part of the activity at the San
Roque Club has been maintained thanks to
local members. For a considerable period
of time during the pandemic restrictions
the club was closed to undergo extensive
refurbishment. She agrees with Javier
about the number of foreign clients,
especially from France. And judging by
the reactivation of events in the spring, the
forecast until October sees this trend set to
continue.
Probably one of the least affected clubs
is Almenara, which has been closed since
October 2019 to undergo an almost total
overhaul of the course, together with the
construction of the new SO/ Sotogrande
hotel.
The Sotogrande Golf Challenge, therefore,
sets out with the express desire to have a
significant impact on the local economy.
“We are convinced that this circuit will
attract many tourists and residents and will
have an impact on the service sector. It is
the best time to launch this initiative and it
will have an impact on the economy of the
municipality,” Ana Ruiz said.
OrganisationEverybody agreed on the importance of
reaching a consensus from the beginning
about how the tournament should be
organised. Numerous meetings were held
with the goal of putting in place one of
the most anticipated sporting events of
the summer. “The main idea was to do
something together and present ourselves
as a destination. This is the first step on a
path we are taking together,” said Óscar
Checa. Ignacio Sánchez revealed more
NEWS MEETINGS IN D´ALICIA
details, such as the initial idea of working in
teams, which led us to the 4BBB Stableford
format which “allows people to have fun
and was the best format for participants to
enjoy themselves on the course.”
Creating a destinationThe Sotogrande Golf Challenge aspires
to become a reference point within the
international amateur golf program,
attracting players from Spain and abroad.
But its promoters want to go further and
aim to establish Sotogrande as a tourist
destination in the international market.
One of the most vocal in this regard was
Ricardo Andrades, who wanted to share his
20-year experience in European fairs and
commercial activities, stating that, “I have
always lamented the fact that Sotogrande
hasn’t been seen as a destination. We need
to make it one because we have it all,” he
said, referring to discussions that began 15
years ago for this purpose but didn’t come
to anything in the end.
The points made by Andrades were
supported by the rest of the attendees,
with Lidia highlighting the extent of
the agreement among the clubs. For
his part, Ignacio commented, “we are
not competition, we complement one
another, with each one offering something
different”, and added that “the golf industry
is more than just a sport in this area, it is a
way of life, and that concept of community
is the image we have to offer.” For Silvia,
Sotogrande “is a case study worthy of
national recognition.” She says this is
based on the excellent relationship of all
the staff who work on the courses. “At an
operational level there is a great sense of
togetherness and a degree of passion that I
think isn’t seen from the outside and that is
what really matters.”
The expected expansion of hotel capacity in
the area was another point that was brought
up as being necessary to successfully host
this type of sporting event.
Ana Ruiz wrapped up the meeting by
expressing the satisfaction of the City
Council with the close relationship it
established with the clubs. “We want
everyone who comes to the tournament to
enjoy a wonderful destination and a unique
experience on the course”.

If there’s one person who knows the
restaurant sector inside out, it is Luis Solano.
A born entrepreneur who, together with
his brother José María, has promoted and
developed the sector in Sotogrande through
a variety of ventures.
His journey in the hospitality industry began
33 years ago when, after leaving his job as a
concert promoter in Barcelona, he decided
to return to the south in March 1988 to set up
the legendary restaurant Midas Sotogrande
with his brother. Since then, Luis Solano’s
business life has taken root in Sotogrande
and today he says the journey continues to
“bear fruit and happiness” for residents and
tourists who come to Sotogrande for their
family vacations.
In the 1980s, Midas pioneered the concept
of combining a restaurant, cocktail bar and
music venue. After a certain hour, meals
stopped being served and the space was
turned over to drinks and dancing. This was
followed by numerous other projects: a
beach bar in Torreguadiaro that later moved
to Sotogrande; another Midas in Sierra
Nevada; the restaurant and beach nightclub
`El Cucurucho´; the summer terrace `La
Khama´; the nightclub ‘La Iguana´ and its
Italian restaurant `La Palmera´; the artisan
ice cream parlour `Pototos´; the beach club
`El Octógono´; another Midas in Seville,
the restaurant Zaldia; Midasound in Pueblo
Nuevo and the Scapa Polo Lounge, which
later became the Gray Goose Polo Lounge.
After years of dealing with the vicissitudes
of a business career, he now looks forward

to enjoying his golden years and focusing
on other projects. His plan being to pass
the baton on to those members of his team
who know the business inside out. “I am
stepping down from the business. My plan is
to retire in three or four years,” he explains.
But he knows better than anyone the need
for businesses to renew themselves, which
is why a comprehensive refurbishment of
Midas is scheduled to begin in November.
But first, and in keeping with his restless
and inexhaustible entrepreneurialism,
he has another surprise in store for this
summer. The new business venture from
the Solano family is called The Traveler
Art (thetravelerart.com), selling art online
created by painters from all over the world.
The official presentation will be at the
beginning of July in Midas, with an exhibition
that will be in the port restaurant until the
end of August. “As the name suggests, the
idea is that you can get keepsakes from any
destination in the world,” he says.
Luis Solano has a deep understanding of
Sotogrande and how it has managed to
maintain its uniqueness and prestige over
the years. At the same time, it has opened
itself up to and become integrated with the
rest of the Campo de Gibraltar, inviting in the
inhabitants of the region and Gibraltarians.
“It has integrated into Campo de Gibraltar
society, which is important because it gives
us value. As a business, it helps us a lot
and for the region it is important to have a
leisure and recreation area of this standard,”
he says.
After a difficult year for the restaurant
industry and the changes it has brought
about, such as the trend towards delivery,
Luis feels that he has laid the foundations
and speaks from experience. He has acquired
enough wisdom to speak authoritatively
about the difficulties of running “bars”,
but he feels that it has all been worth it
and is proud of the fact that, among other
achievements, he has employed more than
a thousand people. “The future of Midas
will be the staff, who have been and are so
important to me. They are the ones who
should continue the business.”
Last summer’s unique circumstances
saw Midas record the best July ever. The
forecasts for the high season of 2021,
according to Luis Solano, are somewhat
less clear, although no less promising. But
there is no doubt that Midas will continue
to be that legendary meeting place, where
the quality of the goods and service will
continue to be among the best that Puerto
Sotogrande has to offer.
I am stepping down from the business.
My plan is to retire in three or four years

events for hedonists and for people who
value noble, heritage and artisan products,
like the cars that we sell.”
In Chambao, luxury and premium automotive
lovers will be able to see two hybrid models
from Bentley Motors, as well as an exhibition
of the entire range: the Continental GT, the
brand’s flagship product; the Flying Spur
luxury super saloon and best-selling luxury
SUV in Bentley’s history, the Bentayga 4x4.
According to Alejandro, who joined the
company in 2015, the last year and a half has
witnessed “rapid adaptation in all sectors
and especially in the Spanish automotive
industry.” And today, any forward-
thinking dealership sells cars online, where
much of the rest of the process takes place
also. Digitisation “has changed the sales
processes, the philosophy and the culture
of the company,” explains Alejandro.
The year 2020 has been tough for most

acknowledges.
But he turns more positive in outlook
when we talk about 2021, “we have started
particularly strong,” he says. In fact, in
Marbella the company has continued
its expansion, opening a dealership in
Estepona. Without a doubt, Marbella is a
special and privileged place, where multiple
currents converge that continue to attract
investors and talent to the Costa del Sol.
The talk with Alejandro gives us an insight
into the philosophy of a leading company in
the luxury sector, which looks to the future
with optimism, and has a solid expansion
strategy with experienced and qualified
personnel and digitised processes.
In the future, the Company, which has
113 years of experience in the European
automotive industry, predicts the advent
of new purchase and repurchase formulas
in the midst of an accelerated technological
transition that is raising prices. According to
Alejandro, “they are betting on electricity, on
the energy accumulation in lithium batteries
and other components, but the future will
go a little further with the hydrogen cell,
which is less expensive to produce, easy to
manage and maintain, but difficult to store
”.He concludes his forecast by agreeing
with the automotive gurus, when they say
that “we are going to go directly to the
hydrogen stack and this hybrid technology
is going to be transitional.”

Prosperidad en manos de la vanguardia educativa
Prosperity in the hands of the educational vanguard

For days our President of the Government
Pedro Sánchez has been talking about the
Spain 2050 program, a report prepared
by experts from different fields in which
relevant aspects for the future are analyzed,
as well as the solutions that should be
implemented.
Spain will have to solve six pending subjects
regarding the educational system:
The first is the high rate of school repetition.
This phenomenon has nothing to do with
capabilities, but with the standards and
forms of evaluation of our system. Most
scientific research considers that the
abusive use of repetition is an ineffective
and inefficient mechanism, which does not
help either those who repeat or the system
as a whole.
The second is the high rate of early school
socioeconomic level of the home strongly
affects the repetition and abandonment
phenomena. Finally, there is the problem
of the demotivation of the students.
Spaniards begin their schooling with one
of the highest levels of “taste for school” in
Europe. However, this sentiment is rapidly
fading, and they finish secondary school
with satisfaction levels lower that the EU
average.
If Spain wants to remain a prosperous
country in the future, it will have to reach the
educational vanguard before the middle of
the century. For this, the report points out, it
will be necessary to transform the teaching
career, modernize the curriculum, expand
the autonomy of educational centers, create

leaving, which affects the development of
our economy and conditions the work and life
opportunities of thousands of young people
who, after leaving school prematurely,
tend to be doomed to unemployment or

rest of their lives. The third is insufficient
access to post-compulsory studies. This
means that in our country, too many people
leave the system with low levels of training
without a training qualification that enables
them to carry out a professional position.
The fourth has to do with the levels of
learning that seem to have stagnated or
even decreased in regard to basic skills. The
results obtained in the PISA tests describe
stagnation and a low level of excellence.
The fifth is to advance in equal opportunities
and reduce school segregation. The

Likewise, it points out that in 2050 will
have 800,000 fewer students between the
ages of 3 and 15, with which the budget per
student can be doubled without incurring
a significant increase in public spending,
this together with the generalization of
digital technologies will allow us to achieve
this vanguard. The report concludes that
education is one of the main ways to ensure

I fully agree with the government’s
conclusion that education is the main way to
improve the future society. But, I wonder, do
you have to wait more than a decade to start
taking action? What about our students
today?

June began with new public-private
collaboration agreements, in which Puerto
Sotogrande showed its support, signing the
agreement that will provide the necessary
infrastructure, means and logistics within the
development of the ECO2-SOTOGRANDE
project.
The Managing Director of the port entity,
Miguel Ángel Díez, in conversation with
SGplus, showed his satisfaction at being
part of this initiative, promoted by Andalu-
Sea and in which the universities of Cádiz,
Málaga, Granada and Almería participate.
“when I was introduced to the project, it
seemed very interesting, as it was based
on a combination of environmental,
biological and technological knowledge,”
he commented on the matter.
“for us, the environment in which we live
is a main asset”, Díez pointed out in the
explanation of what it means to stablish a
stable and permanent collaboration alliance
with universities and knowledge production
centers. In this way, what is intended is to
consolidate the commitment to research
and innovation in strategic sectors, and
to serve to build a fairer, egalitarian and
sustainable future with the environment
and the blue economy as protagonists.
This union to carry out the circular project,
where 25 high-level researchers including
CSIC researchers participate, according to
Díez, promotes public-private research and
turns the port into an operations center
as a laboratory at the service of science,
innovation and advanced training for current
and future blue economy professionals.
That which, according to the European
Union, “recognizes the importance of the
seas and oceans as engines of the economy
due to their great potential for innovation
and growth.”
With this approach, the project signed and
already launched by each of the parties
involved intends to study one of the
problems that threatens the Mediterranean
coast and the waters of the Campo de
Gibraltar, the presence of the invasive
alga Rugulopteryx okamurae. To do this,
different samples will be carried out with
ROVs-submarine robots from boats both on
the Costa del Sol and in the coastal vicinity
on both sides of the Strait. Similarly, training
workshops on the use of this technology
for younger generations have also been
launched. “it is very important that they
understand the environment in which they
live. The idea is to generate knowledge and
expectations so that they are directed to
careers of this type. You have to involve
young people and what better way that
technology to do it, since the best way to
learn is when you have fun”, indicated the
port director.
new proposals to the parties involved and
they have been received with interest. It is
about taking advantage of the fact that it
is a circular project and that it meets the
requirements of the Next Generation funds
to launch an observatory of the Spanish
coasts with a volunteer. “it seems unheard
of for a country like Spain, with thousands
of kilometers of coastline, to have such
an important deficiency,” he stated while
referring to the success of the formula in the
United Kingdom. This would allow, in the
words of Díez, that “with different models
established by the universities, a series
of volunteers take data from the marine
environment and the draw conclusions”. “it
is about establishing an observatory at the
national level that can help us improve our
coastline,” he concluded.
Díez also wanted to highlight the
importance of being a circular project.
The involvement of different parties also
enables the presence of a company that,
thanks to the management of the University
of Málaga through the Ministry of Ecological
Transition, is in charge of valuing algae
residues. This will allow the algae collected
in the banquettes of the beaches, instead
of being discarded, they are beginning
to be used to manufacture other types of
materials that, once placed on the market,
will allow raising the funds that will be
reinvested to continue with the project.
ECO2-SOTOGRANDE has a program with an
estimated duration of 18 months. Period that
Miguel Ángel estimates can be extended to
conclude with the objectives set at 100%.

where do you start and how do you go
about carrying it out? It was a really big
challenge since I come from the world of
swimwear, but I like challenges, and this
made me very excited. I set out to work and
did my best to fulfil the expectations and
trust they had placed in me. I brought my
team together and shared my enthusiasm
with them and from the beginning we
worked in full coordination with the
different teams in Sotogrande. We hope
to be able to create a singular and unique
space together.
What concepts have inspired you? We
wanted to bring our artistic vision to the
project based on the idea of the great
Andalusian symbol, the cortijo (traditional
Andalusian farmhouse), but reinterpreted
and renewed. The soul of the hotel is a
Modernised Cortijo, with everything that that
implies: rebellious luxury, energy, passion
and a taste for the unexpected. Immersed
in the vibrant and festive atmosphere of
Andalusia, the set of creations is basically
inspired by three iconic elements of
Andalusian culture: the carnation and
the fan, a cheerful palette expressed in
minimalist strokes, which reflects the festive
and passionate character of its people. And
a third iconic element: the arch, which will
not only be present in our designs, but also
in prominent areas of the hotel.
How is the creative process going?
The logo that we’ve created represents
the hotel’s essence and the modernised
tradition. It symbolises the gateway to this
privileged and exuberant oasis that is SO/
Sotogrande. The objets d’art, which are part
of the decoration, are designed in harmony
with the interior design elements, to give
the set its own exclusive personality. The
aim is to transmit energy and exclusivity
to every corner of the hotel. And the
uniformity of design has been planned
such that, while respecting the necessary
functionality, creativity and differentiation
prevail. To do this, we have created various
drawings and exclusive patterns for the
hotel, working with the different ranges of
colours, either in contrast or in harmony
with the surroundings.
What value do you think this unusual
image brings to a luxury hotel? All Dolores
Cortés creations seek to give the visitor a
unique experience that conveys a sense of
well-being and luxury in an exclusive and
welcoming environment while continuing to
spread the joy and vibration that is palpable
in Andalusia. We want to convey to the
guest rural and urban vibes at the same
time: freshness and rustic charm combined
with a modern vision.
One of the main objectives that both brands
share is that we want to convey a lifestyle,
spirit and attitude, where the passion for
well-being and health is fundamental.
The hotel will open its doors in the middle
of summer when the Dolores Cortés
swimwear brand takes centre stage. How
would you describe the 2021 collection?
Each season we develop several trends
for each of our lines aimed at a different
target for women. Dolores Cortés Pasarela,
our Premium line, is inspired by the poster
that the painter Josep Renau drew up
for the inauguration of the Las Arenas
swimming pools in 1934. A collection with
an ergonomic feel and constructive details
in a revolutionised navy style, fusing
nostalgia and modernity. Dolores Cortés
Swimwear, the most extensive, is aimed at
different tastes and needs. It presents four
trends: Jungle warrior, with sophisticated
forms in animal print and vegetation
drawings on lurex and lacquer textures, in
soft and neutral colours; Stripe Wave, with
a reinvented marine atmosphere; Botanical
Dream, with dynamic prints and colourful
floral motifs combined with geometric
elements; and Summer Bounty, pieces of
clean and precise monochromatic shapes in
various colours, in textured fabrics. Finally,
LOLA Dolores Cortes is our recently created
line. Its shapes, colours and designs are
young, free, cosmopolitan and dynamic, like
its wearers. For this summer, the trends are:
Less is more, Journey to the ’70s, Tropical
Adventure and Festival.
You have combined your practice of
medicine with that of a designer, but in the
end, has your mother’s influence won out?
Since I was little, I have always played a
role in the company and for many years I
have combined both professions. One has
helped the other in allowing me to see and
understand people and their needs. While
doing both, I did them separately, even
hiding the fact and using a different name.
I have been fully dedicated to the company
as a manager and creative director for about
10 years, due to my mother’s advancing
age. But I have not forgotten my other
profession which I chose as my vocation. I
am a designer, businesswoman and doctor.
I don’t give up anything.
What advice would you give women when
choosing their swimwear? First of all, a
mirror. You have to observe how your body
is, what you want to highlight and what you
prefer to go unnoticed. On that premise,
you choose and test. Trends are important
to keep up with fashion, but you have to
know how to adapt them to your physique
and personality. The important thing is to
be you and to be as beautiful as possible.

“the sun is coming”.
1. FACEIt is highly recommended to start with a
good exfoliation to remove all the dead cells
that remain. This should not be very intense
or deep as your skin may be somewhat
damaged or tired and the hydrolipidic
mantle may be affected.
The next step is a good hydration to recover
the skin and provide it with all the water
it needs. And finally, never, never go out
without sun protection… “the sun is coming”.
2. BODYThe body is now and just after the summer
when it most needs to be exfoliated. Now it
is totally essential for it to be totally clean
to receive the sun’s rays and show off a
nice tan and not that characteristic patchy
tan because the skin is not clean. Focus on
the elbows and knees, a thicker and rougher
and sometimes darker area where the lack
of exfoliation and hydration is evident.
Right afterwards we must apply our favorite
lotions to prevent the skin from drying out
further and those white lines of dehydration
from appearing on the legs and arms.
3. IMPROVE HAIRIf we have a fragile or fine hair, it is always
advisable to use products (shampoo, masks,
oils, etc.) that are good for your hair. If you
are going to sunbathe, remember that there
are also products to protect your hair from
solar incidence.
4. GET YOUR AYEBROWS DONEDo not forget that the eyebrows are what

brunette you look like you are angry.
Afterwards, the design made by the
professional can serve as guide, so that
you can continue doing the maintenance at
home. Another option that is sweeping is
Microblading, with this you will wear perfect
eyebrows forever. And if you do not dare,
there is another more temporary option
that is Henna, with which you will wear a
beautiful design for a while.
5. DYE YOUR EYELASHESIt is essential for blondes because the color
completes the eye, gives it shape. If they
are rare with black, you can put a brown,
although our experience is that in the end
they all end up choosing bluish black to
highlight the volume of their eyelashes.
We recommend using products that make
eyelashes grow like REVITALASH, a vegan,
hypoallergenic product with a spectacular
result.
Apart from the color in the eyelashes we can
find two more options to show them off: one
would be the Lifting of eyelashes to curls
them and another would be the Eyelash
Extensions.
6. USE SELF TANNERThe ESTHEDERM solar line has all the best
products so that the sun is you ally.
Remember that at L’essenza we advise you on all aesthetic and medical treatments and consultations are free. We want to help you improve aesthetically, but we cannot forget that we must love ourselves as we are and maintain a healthy and happy life.

VERANO PLAYAS
With the summer of 2021 now afoot, we take a tour of the beaches along the eastern coast of San Roque and
make some holiday plans
BY REYES SEIJAS · PHOTO GIBRALDRONE
The season starts with several options
They shine with their own light, an
unmistakable halo of calm and enjoyment,
and from the month of June bless us with
splendid days of light, sand and sea. The
beaches become a hub of activity for
locals, residents, bathers and tourists every
summer. Natural spaces where you feel
free and can brave the warm temperatures,
practice water sports, enjoy the best cuisine
or take in spectacular views at sunset.
The eastern coast of San Roque is spoiled
for choice, with a varied coastline catering to
different tastes, ages, hobbies or particular
needs. The shoreline stretches from the
beach of Cala Sardina to Alcaidesa - both
with Blue Flags this year - passing through
Torreguadiaro, Sotogrande, Guadalquitón
and Torrecarbonera.
Since the beginning of spring, work has
been carried out on the beaches to ensure
that when the good weather arrives, they
will be ready for everyone to use. Now that
high season is here and the beaches of the
municipality have been deemed to be in
SUMMER BEACHES
compliance with safety measures, they are
turning into hives of activity and leisure.
This is thanks not only to the innate qualities
of the beaches, but also to the businesses,
the Beaches delegation that provides the
necessary material and personal equipment,
and the clubs and companies in the nautical
sector.
Of all of the beaches, the most urban is
Torreguadiaro, also known as Las Conchas
beach, with a wide range of services of all
kinds along its 1,300 meters. Located in a
fishing area, it is ideal for spending the day
with the family, walking along its promenade
or letting the little ones play in the children’s
area. Dominating the restaurant service,
with live music throughout the day, are
Bahía Limón and Chambao, in addition to
the range of eateries to be found in the local
area or at the marina. It is one of the busiest
beaches and a great place to learn about
the local history or environment, especially
its two watchtowers and the Natural Park of
the Torreguadiaro Lagoon.
With 2,250 meters in length from the mouth
of the Guadalquitón river to the marina,
Sotogrande beach offers numerous options
for restaurants, water sports and family
entertainment. Access is free, but the need
to cross the urbanisation to reach it means
that it’s residents and vacationers who enjoy
it the most. What was once the sight of the
first polo field in Sotogrande, today brings
together the beach bars El Bunker, Gigi’s
Beach and La Brisa. It’s a stone’s throw away
from Puerto Sotogrande and the Real Club
Marítimo and adjacent to the beach club El
Octógono and Trocadero Sotogrande.
If you want to get away from all the activity
and spend a calm day connecting with
nature, the beaches of Guadalquitón and
Torrecarbonera are the best options. Both
are located in sparsely populated areas,
inviting you to disconnect from the daily
routine. The first of them constitutes an area
of high ecological value, which houses the
last cork oak forest along the Mediterranean
coast in Europe, as well as a Roman site of
the same name. Torrecarbonera, which is
even more isolated, maintains a high level of
environmental conservation.
The westernmost strip of this area of the
coastline ends with Alcaidesa beach, on the
border with the municipality of La Línea. The
almost virgin beach, a section of which is a
designated nudist area, is home to several
bunkers from the Second World War.
And we cannot finish this tour without
stopping at the other end of the municipality,
on the border with the province of Malaga,
where we find the popular beach of Cala
Sardina, also known as El Cabrero or Cala
Taraje. Il Soño and Cai beach bars, visible
from the highway, invite bathers to enjoy
some Mediterranean cuisine or end the day
with live music.
But since it is better to experience it than to
hear about it, why not explore the beaches of
the Sanroqueño coast this summer? There’s
no shortage of ways in which to enjoy the
sun, bathing and spectacular views of the
Rock and the Strait of Gibraltar.

El Museo Cruz Herrera acoge la exposición’ La vuelta de Willy Fog’
The Cruz Herrera Museum hosts the exhibition ‘The return of Willy Fog’

ABOGADO. EX ALCALDE
I thought it would be enough with my latest
article on the subject, but in view of the
“change” that has been happening recently
in the region I think I must continue trying to
clarify the issue at hand, given the general
lack of knowledge on the matter. Above
all, political leaders are the ones that know
the least. As I was saying, from the outset,
everyone is in favour of these forms of
energy production - let us call them clean
and non-polluting - but nobody wants cables,
electric lines, substations, etc, even though
there are no wireless modes of transporting
the energy. Bluetooth has not evolved to
the point that it is able to carry this type
of energy. Anyone could see coming that,
Frontera at the moment there are projects
in different phases of development for more
than 3,000 MW. How many hectares would
they occupy? Make the calculation.
In Tarifa and the region of La Janda more
than twenty years ago this same thing
happened with the Wind Farms. One
windmill is fine and it looks nice, but not
2,000!, and when they saw the number all of
their alarms went off. The environmentalists
themselves, staunch defenders of renewable
energy, raised a cry for the alleged impact on
birds and other species.
Then, the Junta de Andalucía and the
Diputación de Cádiz, coordinated with the
affected municipalities for the creation of
OPINIÓN
now, in addition, there has been a popular
and media uproar against the occupation
of lands used for agricultural and livestock
purposes. That is why it must be understood
that, and it should be made clear, renewable
energy, especially solar, takes up a lot of
space, and it being renewable means that
it also has to be ALTERNATIVE; that is, of
sufficient production in order to replace or
at least reduce the production of the other
energy sources (nuclear, gas, oil ...).

about 14 kilometers that we can consider
of medium difficulty and requires good

the field.
We will orient ourselves by a stone wall

As we climb the route becomes flatter and

of this mountain range. Recently, a group of
people from los Barrios have restored the

If we are lucky enough to have a clear

natural beauty of our region. The Rock of

surrounding towns will appear to us to the

rock formations that make us a filigree

Among these formations we will highlight
the Arco del Niño, a huge sandstone bridge

As we warned in the previous collaboration,
it is essential to apply for permits to be able
to make this route and we must exercise
extreme care and respect so that these
wonderful peaks continue to maintain their
pristine beauty.

Me recuerda a Los Goonies o Cuenta

What does Oliver’s Universe have, that
since you read it you knew that you would
base your first fiction feature film on it?
The first thing is that it is written by one
of my best friends, Miguel Ángel González.
It was in 2010, just when I was studying
in New York, where I made a short-called
Somersault, also based on the 80s and
our childhood, just like the book. His way
of writing created a universe of his own,
mixing magic with realism, with our area,
neighborhood stories… that was the germ,
I have always had it in mind, until the right
moment was given.
What image of the Campo de Gibraltar will
we be able to see in the film? An image
that has never been seen, because it is a
film based on the 80s. it is not hidden that
it was a more depressed area when the
northern half of Spain was coming out of the
Transition and that it is an industrial area,
on the contrary, it embraces it visually. For
example, the beach of the Colonia de Puente
Mayorga has been one of the protagonists
because visually and narratively they count
a lot. This environment is where I have
grown up and in which we have had a
good time having thousands of adventures
as children. It reminds me of The Goonies
or Count on me, where children from the
suburbs or industrial towns, used it as
something magical to live adventures. This
is an area where there is a lot of magic if you
look at it from a new child’s point of view.
The cast has the peculiarity of having
selected children from the area through
online casting. The subject of children has

I understand that your relationship with
Enrique Búmbury arose from your offer
via email many years ago…Yes, when I was
studying with the Talentia scholarship in the
US I wanted to make a musical documentary
about a rock star for my final degree project
and I knew that Búnbury was going to
tour there. I proposed by mail to make a
documentary and the next day he called
me, agreed to let us be with them and from
there came the documentary The Longest
Way. From then on, the relationship began.
It is essential to get stuck in and the younger
you are, the more important it is. Between
the ages of 20 and 30 I tried by all means
in Spain, but it was not as launched as when
they gave me the scholarship. I just turned
30 when I arrived in New York and there
I did go with the mentality of eating it all.
That was what made a huge qualitative leap
from one year to the next, and that’s when
we started to do bigger things. I speak in
the plural because with me is Raúl Santos,
who is also from Algeciras, my childhood
friend and with whom I set up the 700
Gramos Production Company. You have
to take risks and not set limits. We were
two kinds with working parents and what
we have achieved has been based on self-
confidence, taking risks and with a lot of
work.
Do you believe in the importance of not
losing that rootedness? Yes, because
when you live abroad for a long time, you
realize that the most special and authentic
thing you can do is not to lose your roots
and roots is everything you do. The biggest
mistake people make who go there to study
or make movies is to start doing things like
them. In the US they value outsiders who
tell them their own stories, but who are
universal. Don’t be afraid to be proud of
where you come from and show it to the
world.
been a discovery because it was not easy, it
is a film where children are very important
and I wanted them to have self-confidence,
naturalness, not to be very professional
and also with the accent of the area. More
than a thousand children showed up online
and, in the end, we found five. Then there
are others who have met in Seville and
the protagonists, Rubén Fulgencio, who is
from Madrid. The story is about a child who
comes from outside and he, acting is an out
of the ordinary, spectacular, and I think he is
going to give a lot to talk about.
What ingredients must a cinematographic
work have to penetrate the public and
also have the luck to be recognized? It is
the combination that everyone is looking
for and the most complicated. I think that
what you have to have, above all, is honesty
and a story that hooks a lot. With musical
documentaries like the ones, I have made of
famous people, many times the mistake of
making them is made to praise the artists
and tell how well they do it. There is no
history there. That does not hook the viewer
and those who are not fans get tired. If you
are looking for the story, the three acts, the
emotion, the overcoming of the character,
the narrative arc that goes from wanting to
achieve something to getting it or losing
it, then you have that combination. Now
you can tell the true story, the viewer will
be entertained and will be hooked on the
movie. Oliver’s universe is a film that has
many deep and adult themes, but at the
same time a very simple and very attractive
plot for audiences with children.
This environment is where I have grown up and in which we

Experience is the best education. Experience,
whether acquired in a personal or
professional capacity or due to external social
circumstances, teaches us new skills and
the capacity to evolve. Sotohousekeeping
is evidence of this. It is the culmination of
everything Pepi Gil has learned throughout
his professional career and poured into
the company, which offers comprehensive
cleaning of private and holiday homes,
companies and new builds. For three
years, Pepi and his team have been working
daily to meet the cleaning needs of their
clients in Sotogrande and the surrounding
areas, who seek quality, trustworthiness,
efficiency, commitment and adaptability.
Sotohousekeeping allows you to hire the
cleaning service by the hour and pay only
for the work done. “With us, you pay for the

and personalised communication in both
English and Spanish, Pepi’s modus operandi
is constantly adapting to the circumstances
and requirements of each individual or
company at a given time of the year. It’s an
approach to the job that hadn’t been taken
before and that helps retain customer loyalty
because, as Pepi says, “it does not involve
an extra expense every month, because,
for example now with the pandemic, there
are many people who have not returned to
the area for a year. The company can be
contacted by phone or through the website

the type of and duration of the service

the desired expectations, Pepi always meets
with his clients first to learn about their
needs first-hand and offer them a tailored
budget. This way, the service can be carried
out without the client having to worry about
cleaning products or any other materials
because everything is included. The peace
of mind of putting your home or business
in the hands of trusted professionals
for comprehensive or specific cleaning
(window cleaning, laundry, ironing, kitchen
cleaning, etc.) by the hour is something
that only Sotohousekeeping offers. Pepi’s
assessment of the last three years is positive,
as is his outlook on the future. This is thanks

to be signed further in advance of the work,

Blueprint for a sustainable future
Since 1974, World Environment Day has
been celebrated every June 5, as established
by the United Nations on the occasion of
the beginning of the Stockholm Conference
in 1972. It marks the day on which we reflect
upon the challenges we face in ending
pollution, reversing biodiversity loss, and
combating climate change.
The objective of the day, as conceived by
the United Nations, is to promote global
engagement and social and political
action on environmental issues. The
official bodies and institutions of the
Campo de Gibraltar also celebrated
the important date, in a year still
dominated by the pandemic.
Diverse initiatives drew participants
from government institutions
and locals alike, among whom
there is a growing commitment to
environmentalism and sustainability
throughout the year. Within the
‘Restoration of ecosystems’ framework
adopted by the UN and other groups
for 2021, San Roque has committed to
the 3Rs of the environment: “Reimagine,
Recreate and Restore.” The deputy mayor
of the department, Juan Serván, appealed
to the population to play their part in
conserving the environment by planting
trees, recycling their waste and avoiding
activities that cause pollution. But such
promises need to be turned into concrete
actions if the current paradigm is going to
be changed. This is what forms the basis of
the European Green Pact, which the citizens
of Campo de Gibraltar are being asked to
endorse by the local government, which is
disseminating its information campaign via
Europe Direct.

the European Commission intends to
carry out in the coming years to make
Europe the first continent with zero

Industry, mobility, energy, cleaner cities,

a plan of action for the circular economy.
Protected areas will be established on at

Like father… three generations of carpenters in Sotogrande
There are places where time seems to
have stopped. Spaces full of memories,
conversations, smells, material remains and
machinery where the usual activity continues
today, adapted to the new market demands
and the technological advances of the last
decades. Something like this happens in
the carpentry of Alfonso Bautista, an expert
carpenter who still maintains the workshop
in the heart of Sotogrande next to the old
Paniagua farmhouse.
The roots to one of the most traditional
trades of man in the family of Alfonso
Bautista dates back to his grandfather, who
divided the work between his carpentry
in Jimena and the workshop that the
former owner of the farmhouses in the
area (Paniagua, Sotogrande, Los Canos
and Valderrama) established him to work
for him and that it is still exactly the same
where his grandson continues to work
today. SGplus has been able to chat with
him and learn some details of a lifetime
dedicated to wood.
Alfonso’s professional career cannot be
explained without the memories of a
childhood watching his grandfather work
and then his father and uncle, who he used
to help on weekends and on vacations. After
the sale of the farmhouses to McMicking to
start the project of what is now Sotogrande,
in the early 1960s the manager itself
proposed to his grandfather to become a
salaried employee of the company and to
be the official carpenter of the urbanization.
Thus, with the help of Alfonso’s father and
later the incorporation of his uncle, they
spent years of work in which the then
handicraft work of carpentry was highly
demanded in any type of construction.
The quantitative leap probably took place,
according to Alfonso, when at the end of
the 70s they began to work on their own,
maintaining the same location, the same
warehouse and the same services, but
since then with the possibility of hosting
more jobs from individuals and Business.
Alfonso’s definitive incorporation into the
family business occurs after completing his
military service and it is in 1992 when he
finally takes over the workshop.
Memories of how one worked before, of how

he learned the trade based on seeing his
elders and daring himself with new tasks and
of how Sotogrande has grown, monopolize
the conversation with a man who does not
regret having declined another forecast for
the future and have followed the same path
as his father and grandfather.
But he is aware that times have changed.
Before, the vast majority of the houses that
were built in the urbanization, required
the work of the master carpenter for the
exterior carpentry, cabinets, shutters, doors,
lattices and other interior and exterior
constructions, which were made by hand
from start to finish with pine wood Sweden.
Today PVC and other materials have
gained ground and practically everything is
prepared from the factory. Therefore, their
task is mainly focused on assemblies and
repairs in lifelong houses that continue to
preserve that wood that Alfonso restores or
replaces, keeping alive the memory of many
families who have trusted them for decades.
In his opinion, the evolution of the market
at a technological level has brought him
advantages that translate into fewer hours of
dedication and physical effort, which on the
other hand has allowed him a higher quality
of life. However, it regrets that the damage
caused goes trough quality. The key lies in
the very origin of the manufacturing chain,
that is, in the drying of the wood after being
cut, he explained. Formerly, this wood was
left to dry in the open before its distribution,

ANIMAL WORLD ANTICOVID VACCINE
In addition to highlighting
the current paucity of evidence on the
transmission of the virus from pets to
people.
In this sense and with the purpose of
clarifying the doubts of those who are
still not entirely clear about the risk of
transmission of the virus between pets
and humans, as well as to what extent the
coronavirus can affect our companion
animals, the Center for the Disease Control
and Prevention provides all the necessary
information in this regard.
Taking into account the inquiries carried
out to date and the data obtained since the
pandemic began, they conclude that the risk
of animals transmitting Covid-19 to people
is considered low. They do claim that it can
spread from people to animals under certain
circumstances, especially, during close
contact. Therefore, it is advisable to treat
pets like other family members, avoiding
interaction with other people outside the
home and in the event that a member of the
family becomes ill, isolate that person from
the rest, including pets.
According to experts, there is currently no
evidence that the virus spreads to people
through the skin or hair of pets. Therefore,
they do not advise that we clean them with
chemical disinfectants, alcohol, hydrogen
peroxide or any other product that is
not suitable for pets, such as the usual
hydroalcoholic gel, disinfectant wipes or
any other industrial or surface cleaner.
Pets can become infected – until now it has
been through contact with humans – but
there is also the possibility that they will get
sick or not. The registered cases show that
the animals that have presented symptoms
have been mild and they have been cared for
at home, establishing the same procedures
and the same precautions as when a human
test positive for coronavirus. In case of
suspicion about whether our pet has been
able to contract the disease, it is advisable
to speak by phone with the veterinarian so
that he can give us the guidelines to follow.
With or without a vaccine, it is best to
continue taking precautions and protect our
pets from a virus that does not understand
borders or species, due to what may happen.
