IntroductionA solar roadway is a road surface that generates electricity by solar power using photovoltaic and includes solar panels and LED signage, that can be driven on.
Problems with existing roads
• Made with petrochemical product asphalt. This is a nonrenewable product.
• Deposition of ice.• Needs to be painted
with information.• Huge cost for repairs.
4
Imagination
5
+
How it works.
6
Working
• Sunlight falls on solar panels which generates electricity.
• This at same time is transferred to nearby houses and power stations.
• LEDs controlled by microprocessors display information on the surface of road.
• Anti Icing layer clears the road.• Also senses changes in weight.
7
Construction of Solar Roadway Panel
8
Layers
9
Solar Roadway panel is made up of three layers:• Road Surface Layer• Electronics Layer• Base Plate Layer
Road Surface Layer
• Translucent and high-strength.
• Rough enough to provide great traction
• Embedded with LEDs and a heating element.
• Weatherproof.10
Electronics Layer
• Solar Panels• Contains a
microprocessor board with support circuitry.
• Senses loads on the surface and controls the heating element.
• A communications device every 12 feet.
11
Base Plate Layer
• Distributes power and signals to and from the panels.
• Waterproof for protecting the electronics layer.
12Base Plate Layer
Challenges
Making a glass which is:– Same traction as
asphalt road.– Strong enough to
support traffic.– Shatter proof.– Fireproof.– Anti – Glare to avoid
reflection on driver’s eyes.
13
Advantages
• Intelligent Highways• Illuminated Roads• Smart always connected roads and vehicles• Smart Grid• Oil Independence
14
Intelligent Highways
• Pays for itself• Telephone, cable TV,
and high-speed internet• Intercommunication
between road and cars to avoid collision
• Tracking system embedded.
15
Illuminated Roads
• Real time information can be displayed on road itself.
• Works as drivers personal assistance.• LEDs could warn drivers if they exceed
speed limits or drive too slow.16
Oil Independence
• Generates its own electricity which could be used for all purposes.
• By using charging stations electrical cars could have same advantage as IC engine for distance.
• Fix price security.• Contributes towards a
greener tomorrow.17
Smart Grid
• Removes the need of grids, directly transfers electricity.
• No overhead wiring and poles required.
• Also has telephones, cable TV and high speed internet optics layed down.
18
Traffic Assistance
• Each panel has a microprocessor that monitors the load above it.
• With embedded GPS it could itself evaluate the alternate route.
• Better traffic management thus further decreasing pollution.
19
Drivers assistance
20Warns drivers for sudden change in weight on roads.
Disadvantages
• High initial cost.• Road surfaces
deposits salt, rubber and dirt, which reduces its efficiency.
21
Conclusion
• To this we conclude that definitely present roadways can be replaced by the solar roadways but huge initial investment requires.
