Page 1: Sleep Deprived? Wake-Up and Read This!

Infants

Infants need between 12 - 15 hours of sleep each day. When infants are put to bed drowsy, but not asleep, they will likely become “self-soothers” which encourages them to fall asleep independently.

Toddlers

Encourage the use of a security object such as blanket or stuffed animal for toddlers who should average between 11-14 hours a night. Pre-school age children should get 10-13 hours of sleep every night. A consistent sleeping environment that is cool is key to a good night’s rest.

Teenagers

Teenagers’ biological sleep patterns are changing now and shift toward going to bed and waking up later. They need 8-10 hours every night but it is normal for them not to fall asleep until 11 p.m.

Young Adults

Young adults and adults should not skimp on the recommended 7-9 hours a night. Losing just 20 minutes a night could impair performance and memory the next day.

Adults

Older adults should average 7-8 hours of sleep a night. Regular exercise and sunshine throughout the day will help to achieve restful nights. To help fall to sleep, an activity such as reading at night can help relax older adults.
