About the Singapore International Arbitration Academy… The Singapore International Arbitration Academy was jointly established by the Centre for International Law (CIL) and the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore (NUS), to become Asia’s premier arbitration training programme. Enrolment in CIL’s acclaimed annual Singapore International Investment Arbitration Conference, held during the third week of the Academy, is included in the Academy programme. Who Should Attend? The Academy is targeted at private practitioners, in-house counsel and government officials who deal with international disputes and want to develop their arbitration knowledge and skills. Why Attend? The Academy combines theory, skills training, and lectures on key issues of arbitral law and practice including Investor to State and State to State arbitration. Academy Faculty Leading practitioners, arbitrators and public officials, including The Right Hon. the Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, K.G., President of the Supreme Court of the U.K. and the Attorney General of Singapore, Mr Sundaresh Menon, S.C., will be on the Faculty to share their expertise and insights. It will focus on the relationship between external counsel and the users of international arbitration as well as the relationship between counsel and the tribunal. Sophisticated users of international arbitration will discuss their expectations of counsel. Experienced arbitrators will discuss what they want and expect from counsel.

PRACTICE TRACK COUNSEL
GOVERNMENT ADVISOR / INSTRUCTING SOLICITOR

Participants will be divided up into: (1) Practice Track Counsel, and (2) Government Advisor / Instructing Solicitors. A key part of the programme will be the focus on the special features of State participation in international arbitration. To ensure effective participation and training, only 60 participants will be enrolled – 24 Practice Track Counsel and 36 Government Advisors / Instructing Solicitors. Participants will be selected on merit.
Specialised Tracks
For this specialised track, the Academy will only accept applications from mid-level to senior associates that practice international arbitration in private law firms. These participants will have advocacy skills training sessions and will make submissions in the oral hearings at the end of the programme. They will be judged not only by leading international arbitrators but also by their fellow participants. This is a major opportunity for up and coming lawyers to showcase their skills before their peers from Asia and around the world. Oral advocacy and other prizes will be awarded. Registration is restricted to 24 Practice Track Counsel to ensure effective participation and skills training.
The Academy has invited and reserved a place for one government official from all ten ASEAN states. Applications from other government officials and in-house corporate counsel who handle international commercial and investment treaty disputes will also be accepted. These participants will instruct the Practice Track Counsel for the oral hearings held at the end of the third week of the Academy. Registration will be restricted to 36 Government Advisors / Instructing Solicitors to ensure effective participation and skills training.
