Bonds involve the electrons in an atom.

1. Ionic Bonds• Electrons are transferred from one

atom to another• Formed from ions with a similar

opposite charge• Ex: Mg2+ and O2-

3. Van der Waals Forces

(Intermolecular)• Unequal sharing of electrons

can create regions of a molecule that are charged. • These charged areas are

attracted to regions on a nearby molecule with an opposite charge.
