GRATITUDE EVEN IN GRIEF
It is not God’s role to spare us suffering, but to help us
bear it. When the visitation we dread finds us, we do well
to ask for the strength which will uphold us, for the
insight which will reveal new wisdom to us, for the
special power which will transform our suffering into a
source of blessing. And to such a prayer there is always
an answer. .
Something precious has been taken from us, and we
think of it as something we have lost, instead of
something we have had. We sense only how empty our
lives are now; we forget how full they were before; we
forget the many days and years we shared.
We praise God for our treasures while we have them.
Shall we cease to praise God when they are gone? But God
never gives; God only lends. What is life itself but a loan?
‖Everything,‖ said the Sages, ―is given in pledge.‖
Let us consider the days which have passed not as loss,
but as gain – the gain which comes with new courage,
with nobler tasks, with a wider outlook on life, with a
greater awareness of life’s duties and possibilities.
Morris Joseph (adapted)

In the rising of the sun and in its going down,
we remember them.
In the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter,
we remember them.
In the opening of buds and in the rebirth of spring,
we remember them.
In the blueness of the sky and in the warmth of summer,
we remember them.
In the rustling of leaves and in the beauty of autumn,
we remember them.
In the beginning of the year and when it ends,
we remember them.
When we are weary and in need of strength,
we remember them.
When we are lost and sick at heart,
we remember them.
When we have joys we yearn to share,
we remember them
So long as we live, they too shall live,
for they are now a part of us,
as we remember them.

קדיש יתום
In love we remember those who no longer walk the earth. We are grateful to God for the gift of their lives, for the joy we shared, and for the cherished memories that never fade. May God grant those who mourn the strength to see beyond their sorrow, sustaining them despite their grief. May the faith that binds us to our loved ones be a continuing source of comfort, as we invite those who mourn, and those observing Yahrzeit, to praise God’s name with the words of the Kaddish.
Mourners and those observing Yahrzeit: יתגדל ויתקדש שמה רבא. בעלמא די ברא כרעותה,

PSALM 23
A Psalm of David: The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. He gives me repose in green meadows.
He leads me beside the still waters to revive my spirit. He guides me on the right path, for that is His Nature.
Though I walk in the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no harm for You are with me. Your staff and Your rod comfort me.
You prepare a banquet for me in the presence of my foes. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and kindness shall be my portion all the days of my life. And I shall dwell in the House of the Lord forever.

May God remember the souls of our friends, members of this holy congregation, who have gone to their eternal home. May their souls be bound up in the bond of life. May these moments of meditation strengthen the ties that link us to their memory. May they rest in peace forever in God’s presence. Amen. Exalted, compassionate God, comfort the bereaved families of this congregation. Help us to perpetuate everything that was worthy in the lives of those no longer with us, whom we remember this day. May their memory endure as a blessing. And let us say: Amen.

A YIZKOR PRAYER FOR STILLBORN AND INFANT DEATHS
May God remember my son / daughter ben / bat , who has gone to eternal rest. Her / his life was but the briefest flicker of a flame, extinguished before it had time to shed its light on the world, but not before sharing its warmth with me. Through the months of his / her gestation I prepared to nurture and to love her / him. For the time that he / she lived I gave to her / him everything a parent could have given and received everything I could have expected. May the memory of the joy she / he brought to me in the short time that we were together strengthen me and may God count that joy as the weight of a life filled with such blessing, binding through that love and joy ben / bat in the bonds of eternal life. For the gift of his / her life without transgression I pledge to do acts of righteousness and tzedakah that she / he may merit eternal life and that I may find comfort in this world.

שויתי יהוה לנגדי תמיד, כי מימיני בל אוט.שכן לבטח רי י מח לבי ויגל כבודי, אף בש לכן ש
The Lord has compassion for His creatures; He has planted eternity within our soul, Granting us a share in His unending life. He redeems our life from the grave. During our brief life on earth, God gives us choices; We can cherish hopes, embrace values, and perform deeds which death cannot destroy.
May we all be charitable in deed and in thought, In memory of those we love who walk the earth no longer.
May we live unselfishly, in truth and love and peace, so that we will be remembered as a blessing, as we this day lovingly remember those whose lives endure as a blessing.
- Rabbi Jules Harlow
We rise and read silently the appropriate passages among those which follow.
Personal meditations may also be added.

תשב אנוש עד דכה, ותאמר שובו בני אדם. שובה יהוה עד מתי, והמחם על עבדיך
The days of man are as grass; He flourishes as a flower in the field.
The wind passes over it and it is gone, and no one can recognize where it grew.
But the Lord’s compassion for His worshippers, His righteousness to children’s children, Remain, age after age, unchanging.
Three score and ten our years may number, Four score years if granted the vigor;
Laden with trouble and travail Life quickly passes, it flies away.
Teach us to use all of our days, O Lord That we may attain a heart of wisdom.
Grant us of Your love in the morning That we may joyously sing all our days.
When I stray from You, O Lord, my life is as death; but when I cleave to You, even in death I have life.
You embrace the souls of the living and the dead.
The earth inherits that which perishes. But only the dust returns to dust; the soul, which is God’s is immortal.

אנוש ותחשבהו.־יהוה, מה אדם ותדעהו, בן אדם להבל דמה, ימיו כצל עובר.
בבקר יציץ וחלף, לערב ימולל ויבש.
There is a time for everything; There is a time for all things under the sun. A time to be born and a time to die; A time to laugh, a time to cry; A time to dance and a time to mourn; A time to seek and a time to lose; A time to forget and a time to remember. This day in sacred convocation we remember those who gave us life.
This day we remember those who enriched our life with love and with beauty, with kindness and compassion, with thoughtfulness and understanding.
This day we renew the bonds that bind us to those who have gone the way of all the earth.
As we reflect upon those whose memory moves us this day, we seek consolation, and the strength and the insight born of faith.
Tender as a father with his children, The Lord is merciful with His worshippers. He knows how we are fashioned; He remembers that we are dust.
