Hello Jim,
This photo was taken Sunday Jan
3. My good friend Rich Walauski
and I have been metal detectingogether for 15 + years. We have
not been able to get out diggingince our last hunt in early
December because of the weather.
We had 6 + inches of snowdumped on us, but finally had a
haw and we wanted to get out for
he 1st hunt of the new year.We decided to meet at 8 am
and Rich beat me to our spot.
took this picture as soon as Iarrived. The field still had a few
nches of snow but the soil is very
very soft, easy digging and therewas no frost. Some targets were
0 + inches. The soil is almost like
beach sand. My Grandfather toldme the field was once a potato
arm and in the 20s and 30s it
was a picnic area with ball fieldand swimming area. [which was
actually a historic canal that ran thru the
field].The area is about 10 acres and we have
put in about 80 hours in this field so far. Itproduces great relics every hunt. I will senda few pics from the last few hunts.. The
oldest items were a 1731KG , Fugio and lotof Barbers. Lead figurines, lots of tokens,
and I have over 200 different spoons and
forks they just keep coming out of theground !

As I was putting this
test report to paper(or to disk), the old
90s dance club song withthe catchy beat and the
tagline that went Ive gothe power popped into my head and I thought
t was a fitting title for my review of the latestproduct from RNB Innovations.
Anyone that has spent even a little time in
he field swinging a detector has likely found
hemselves searching a productive site andsuddenly watching the screen goblank bringing an end to what could
have been a banner day. Rechargingdetectors battery pack much like
backing up ones computer on aregular basis is something mostof us know we need to do but tend
o forget about on occasion with unfortunateconsequences. Not sure if it is Murphys Law
n action but whenever I have had my batterygo dead in the field (and yes, Ill admit it has
happened more than once), it is usually at a sitemiles from home and one where I have been
making first-rate finds.I have been using the battery system from
RNB Innovations on my Whites MXT Pro for close
o two years now and have nothing but praise fort. I had the opportunity to take it with me on a
rip to Europe and since the voltage used there isdifferent than what we have in the U.S., I picked
up a converter before leaving that would handlehe current draw of the charger. Well, thankfully I
did not open the package so that I could return itwhen I came home as I did not need to rechargehe pack the entire time I was out of the country.
n fact, I hunted for another month when I gotback before I saw a noticeable drop in battery
voltage. Well, enough of my experience with adifferent RNB product, lets take a look at the
ML-2900 system and what sets it apart from the
factory-supplied pack. When RNB Innovations looked at the battery
systems used by virtually all the metal detectormanufacturers, they saw technology that was
dated and had in fact been replaced in manyother industries. The older Ni-Cad packs had
been replaced with NiMH batteries; however, thenewest technology found in battery-poweredtools, portable electronics and industrial
applications was the Li-Ion battery. They weigh
less, hold a charge for periods of a year or longer,do not develop a memory which allows themto be topped off at any time and can hold more
power than a similarly-sized NiMH or Ni-Cadbattery. After a considerable investment in R&D,
RNB was able to manufacturer a complete battersystem that was drop-in ready and provided aquantum leap in overall performance compared
to the factory packs. With having several Minelab FBS-based
detectors, I found that the NiMH battery packsthat had come with the detectors were no longe
holding a charge as long as they had whenthey were new. If I was going to be out all day, I
needed to ensure I had at least one extra batterypack with me since I knew that the first onewould not make it more than 5 or 6 hours at best
Looking at getting a new pack, I was shockedto see the sticker price on the 1800 mAh NiMH
pack from Minelab . . . . over $100! Based on mysatisfaction with the Li-Ion pack for my MXT Pro,
I checked with RNB and sure enough, they nowoffered a system for Minelabs and the price for
the entire system was on-par with what Minelabwas selling just the battery for. Another factorthat weighed into my decision to go with the
RNB system was the battery power rating . . . 290mAh versus the 1800 mAh rating on the pack
from Minelab. More power simply means morehunting time between charges.

The box arrived soon after placing my orderand in less than 2 hours, the battery was fully
charged . . . another plus over the factory packwhich takes hours to charge.
Due to the deadline for Relic Hunter Magazinegoing to press, I had only a limited amount of
ime to get out and use my E-Trac with the ML-
2900;however, as with the AW-2200 system, Iwas truly amazed at how it performed.Temperatures were in the 20s (and lower at
imes) which as anyone that has hunted in below-
reezing weather can attest to, causes NiMHbatteries to drain down faster than normal. To
put an additional current draw on the battery, Ian with the backlight on all the time. After three
hunts for a total of about 8 hours, the battery wastill indicating a full charge.
Curious to see just how long it would operate, powered up the E-Trac and placed it on the
dining room table with the backlight on around
5PM. Whenever I would walk past it, I would waveomething metallic past the coil. Getting up the
next morning for work, the E-Trac was still on andhowing 3/4 full on the battery strength indicator.
I got home at 4PM and it was still on . . . . andt remained on until I checked around 8PM when
t had finally turned off. The battery had poweredhe E-Trac for better than 30 hours with morehan 24 hours of that being non-stop operation!
Plugging the pack in to the Smart Charger thatcomes with the package, it was fully recharged in
ess than 2 hours . . . . ready to go again. With the number of Minelab FBS detectors in
he field that have battery packs reaching the endof their lifespan, replacing them with something
will be a requirement for many owners and if
you are going to spend the money for a new
pack, why not get one that is light years ahead
of what originally came with the detector. RNBInnovations gives you state-of-the-art technolog
today that will power your detector for years tocome.
The completeML-2900system for MinelabDetectors (Explorer series, E-Trac, Quattro andSafari) lists for $129.99 (USD) which includes the
unique Li-Ion battery pack and the Smart Chargefor home use. An Auto Smart Charger is an
available option. As I mentioned, RNB offers a battery that
fits many of the current detectors from WhitesElectronics as well. They are working on designin
packs for other detectors so even if you do notown a Whites or Minelab, bookmark their websitto see if they release one for your detector.
As I said in my review of the AW-220 systemfor Whites detectors, a battery pack may not be
the most glamorous of accessories; however,
not having to worry about your batteries goingdead and spoiling a day of hunting or having topurchase a replacement battery pack from the
factory for about the same price that provides faless performance makes RNB Innovations batterysystems a must-have item for all detectorists.

development, visit RNB Innovations website

What is a Best Find to you? To me, its
not the monetary value that it might
have, rather its that I chanced todiscover something it thats special .
Perhaps, its the only one in my
collection, or its an object that
completed my collection. Maybe, I just
started hunting and it was my first
find.
I still have my first bullet and
cannon ball found in 1963 with mytrusty WWII mine detector. Theyre
very special to me.
Within the next several pages are
fantastic discoveries, each with their
own story and each of them has a

All-out horsepower, dead-ontarget accuracy, and a pro-designedrelic program ... for finding the
oldest, deepest relics of the past.
A friend invited me to detect
an unhunted backyard. The
house was on a route the
troops took to Gettysburg. We split up, and I took one side of the yard
with my V3i and he took the other. My side produced several mercury
dimes and assorted yard treasures, and then we swapped sides. Soon I
heard a huge signal that read high on the display. Just a few inches down
I popped out my first belt plate. My buddy had gone over the same signal
and decided not to dig thinking it was trash! Once again, having a great
machine and a good location (and friends that share sites) can lead tosuper finds! Matt in Maryland

My best find for 2012. Found east of Kansas
City, Missouri on the home site of JohnNoland, a noted member of Quantrills

Mark Gruner, a coin dealer in Sandpoint,
daho, the token is a fairly scarce town and
only has two issuers with 4 different types. This is the most common of the 4, but
still only a handfull of them. It is rated R-6
3-5 known) and the town is rated R-7 for
ocation rarity (9-11 known for location). He estimates the value around $150 to
$250 and maybe more depending on whos looking/needing it.

The Southern Detectorist Group (SDG) isa small, friendly group of metal detecting
enthusiasts who meet regularly to detect
he fields and forests of Hampshire, Sussexand Surrey.
The group has been running for nearly
wo years and in that time we have
managed to recover, report and preservea number of coins and metal artifacts that
have assisted to reveal the different layersof history that exists within the places that
we are lucky enough to detect.
Southern Detectorists Group - SDG
A DIG WITH A DIFFERENCE
Recently the SDG was lucky enough tohave been given the opportunity to work
with the local council and archeological
services on a community event in theAndover area.
The event was held to engage the local
community in a day of field walking andarcheological investigation. The SDG were
on hand during the event to carry out
metal detecting activities in conjunctionwith the archeological investigations
and also to let any interested membersof the public try their hand at detecting.No-one knew quite how the day would
turn out but after parking up and packing

detecting equipment, the SDG set off uphe track towards the field that would
become the focus for the days event.
Conditions were perfect for the event. The field was nicely turned over and there
was only a minimal amount of dry stalks
hat ran in vague lines across the field thatwould put up any resistance to a swing.
The bright sunshine and blue sky was also
a welcome sight and we knew that it wasgoing to be a hot one and so the first job
was to get the sun cream on as soon as
possible. All of the SDG members were perfectly
urned out in their black SDG T-shirts and
caps which had been supplied by SDGmember, Broadsword and the addition of a
ew more Minelab baseball caps was also awelcome addition to the uniform.
On arriving at the site, the archeologists
were already out in the field setting up the
grid pattern that would be used duringhe day. After the initial introductions were
made, the SDG members assisted with
setting up the gazebos and tables that
would be used to display any finds beforeeadying their equipment for the day.
As you can guess, it doesnt take long toready an eager group of detectorists and
soon we were all lined up with detectors
and spades at the ready. The archeologistsfinished setting up the search grid and
they then came over to the group to
provide us with our instructions for theday.
It was encouraging to see that
even during the initial site set up, thearcheologist had managed to recover a
nice flint core and some burnt flint from
the site indicating that the site held somegood ancient history. Each SDG member
was allocated a square of the grid and
the instructions for the first 2 hours of theevent were to search each grid square
systematically and record any significantfinds which would then be recorded incontext before being taken to the display
table.
It wasnt long before heads were downand each member of the SDG began
searching their chosen grid square. Sure
enough finds started to show and in the
first two hours rings, roman coins and

hammered coins were all retrieved alongwith the usual interesting bits of lead, nails and other oddments. Each find was
bagged, recorded and then taken back
o the event organisers so that the itemscould be scrutinised.
During the morning, the archeologists
were also on hand to provide tips and
nformation on what to look for whenfield walking. This was really informative
and whilst detecting I kept an eye out forany pieces of pottery and worked flint.
managed to pick up a few interesting
pieces of flint only to be told that theywere probably caused by the plough.
At 1 oclock the public were due to
arrive and right on schedule, we started tosee groups of people making their way up
he path towards the site from the nearby
housing development. The next 3 hours can only be described
as one of the most pleasurable detecting
experiences that I have ever had. After checking in with the event
organisers, each member of the public was
provided with a bag with which to collect
any field walking and metal detectingfinds. Most members of the public headedstraight for a metal detectorist to see what
had been found. It wasnt long before
the machines were in the hands of thepublic under the watchful eye of the SDG
members.
Full instructions were given on how to
use the machines and the SDG memberswere on hand to ensure that any holes
were dug safely and the target retrieved. It wasnt long before the field was covered
in small groups of people who were either
field walking or detecting and once againthe finds began to show.
I myself spent the afternoon with a
family with two small children and mustsay that it was magical to see younger
people taking an interest in their local
history. The children really enjoyed huntinaround in the spoil dug from the hole with
the pinpoint probe in order to recover the
target and it didnt really matter what thetarget was either. Every screw, piece of lea
or hob nail was treasure and it told a story
of some point in history. Our star find of
8/14/2019 Relic Hunter Magazine mar-april2013
35/64Relic Hunter March - April 2013
he afternoon was a green, bent and folded
up copper coin (probably a Georgianpenny). This was placed in a bag and after
being recorded and logged, the family was
allowed to take it home as a reminder ofheir dayalong with some pens, badges
and key rings which had kindly been
supplied by MinelabOther coins and bits and pieces were
ecovered during the afternoon. The
best find was made by a young girl whouncovered a balance bar for a set of Iron
Age or Roman scales. This item was duly
ogged and recorded and will be given tohe local school as an example of their local
history and heritage. Not bad for a firstattempt...!
As the afternoon wore on, the members
of the public drifted away and it was
soon time to bring the event to a close.Everyone associated with the event
agreed that it had been a great success
as over 150 members of the public had
visited the site during the afternoon. Itwas also welcoming to have been given
he opportunity to detect alongsidearcheologists as all too often you hear of
riction between the two camps but I am
sure that both sides learnt a lot during thisevent.
The site was eventually cleared and
all of the equipment was packed away.ust before heading off the landowner
nformed us that he would be happy for us
o return to the site to see what other itemsmight lay below the surface of the soil. The
SDG accepted this offer with excitement
and we all agreed that it had been a greatday in so many ways.
