Public Speaking Mistake #1 Telling the Audience

About Themselves

Page 5: Public Speaking Mistakes

Speakers sometimes say things such

as: “We all let fear overcome us and kill our dreams”

Page 6: Public Speaking Mistakes

This may cause some audience members to

think: “I don’t! You don’t even know

anything about my life!”

Page 7: Public Speaking Mistakes

Instead, ask a question:

“Have you ever fear get in the way of your dream?”

Page 8: Public Speaking Mistakes

By asking audience members, you get them to reflect on

their lives which makes your speech valuable

to your audience.

Page 9: Public Speaking Mistakes

Furthermore, since you’re not telling your audience

members about their lives, they’re more likely to accept your message

because you’re not thrusting it upon them.

Page 10: Public Speaking Mistakes

Next time, don’t tell audience members about themselves. Instead, ask them a rhetorical question

Public Speaking Mistake #2 Over-

Generalizing

Page 12: Public Speaking Mistakes

Speakers sometimes over-generalize. They

say things such as “always”, “never”,

“everyone”

Page 13: Public Speaking Mistakes

For example, I’ve heard a speaker say:

“The reason for the high divorce rate is because no-

one bothers to learn the fundamentals of a loving

relationship”

Page 14: Public Speaking Mistakes

That turned me off because my mind immediately

reacted with, “That’s not true! I read

books, attend workshops and seminars on how to

have a good relationship!”.

Page 15: Public Speaking Mistakes

Next time, don’t over-generalize. Instead, say

something like:“Too often, divorces occur

because couples don’t receive training on the art

of marriage”
