December 5, 1966
My wife
and
I observed a UF8 1n
June t
th is year (1966) ,
but
afraid
t
r idicule,
and
not
wishing
publicity,
we
have
hesitated
to t e l l anyane other tha ll re la t ives about our
experience.
After
reading the ar t ic le about UFOa
tn the
la tes t Science Digest an4
learning the address t your of f ice,
I decided
to wr1te to
you 1n
hopes that
my 1ntol,uat1an
will help you.
Firat
of
a l l , I want
to impress
upon
you that
I
have
been
connected with aviat1o:n over the years (as
a
:passenger in ear l ier
years, an
armchair
enthusiasts
1n
la ter
years), so
I am
very fami
l i a r with types
of
aircraf t ,
thei r
behavior, and the behavior
of
atmospheric
conditions.
I
am
36
years
of
age,
my
wife
i s
29.
At thia
la te
date, t i s impossible for
me
to remember the
exact
night of our experience -
one
of
the
things I learned you wish
on
a
report
-
but
everything
else i s vivid 1n my mind.
The night was
very
clear ,
but there was no moon9: The
temp
erature was warm enough that we wore only l ight sweaters. I t was
around
nine o clock, for that is the normal time
we return
home
from washins
a t the
laundromat. , I do not remember
t t were a
Saturday or
Monday
night;
but those were the
only
nights
we
have
washed
recently.
At
the
time
t
our ezperience
we
were l iv -
ing a t reet .
e were almost to our home on t raveling north on
that s t reet , wherl a large, t1ery
r ed
ba l l
atracted our attention.
I t was, I f1rat judged, about a halt-mile to the north, a t an a l t i
tude
of about
1000-2800
tee t ,
which would
put the
object
a t
the
northel ll 11m1
ts
t Crown Hill Cemetery. I t was travellns from West
to East. i
The size
of
the bal l was so large, and i t s appearance o f
such a nature, that I thought a t f i r s t
t
was
a private
ai rcraf t ,
burnins
and
tall.ing
to
the
earth.
n
fact ,
for
a
few
seconds,
I
wa.s cer ta in
the object was a fal l ing plane, part icularly
because
of
the speed, which I to be
around 200
mph. However, when I
drove
the 1ength or
fanother block north
or our
home)
tor a
closer look, the obje glowed
a
bri l l iant
red,
and slowed so much
that I
decided t
was a
helicopter
with some sort
or
a
large
f lare .
I t s
downward
t a l l ,
which
had
been a t f i r s t on a
20
degree angle,
was now
a1most
vert ical ,
and
I
could
at t r ibute
this
only to a
hel1-
cppter,
especially
\vnen the object \ Tas descending very
slowly af ter
an
ea
r l ie r
fast
approach

My curiousity got the
best
or me, for I was
wondering
what a hel icopter was doing
1n
that area,
at
that time, and wonder
i ng 1n
particular what
was
glowing so
red from
i t
'or the color
no
longer
looked
1ike
a
blaze
of
any
sort .
Because
of
the
cemetery,
~ had to drive east an 26th
Avenue
to
Wadsworth,
(appox.
one
mi1e
a t
40
mph)
before
we
cou1d
resume a
northward
t r i f
toward the
object .
All the while,
I
kept
my eye
glued on the object as much as possible)
~ h was now on my l e f t . I t was
then that
I became aware that the
object
was behaving s t ~ e l y even for a helicopter. I t made no
sound,
a t
leas t not loud enough to be heard 1n
my
van.
Now, I
have
always been able
to
hear
a. helicopter While d.rivillg,
even
in trs.f:f'1c,
and
coul.d
easi ly
recognize
one

thea-long
before I
could
see them.
Further,
t h e
object
seemed
to
be
drif t ing l ike
a
parachtme.
The
possib1l.ity o:f a. parachute crossed
my
mind, but

Tha object was almost a t roof-top
level
when
we
turned
north Oll Wadsworth, and t was s t l l l to my l e f t although because

we made,

t was more

object moved

changing

course
to
northeast.
I t
moved
so
rapidly
tha t

size,
despite
the fact
I was moving 50
mph 1n i t s
direction.
I t f ~ a l l y headed due
north, on a l ine
with
Wadsworth,
and grew smaller,
g i v ~ every
indication
of moving
a t
a
high ra te
of speed. I ch.a.sed
the
object two
miles,
but al1 the
time
t
pulled away. (The l ights were
sreen
a t
intersections,
and I was
able
to
maintain my
50 mph
speed). Suddenly, the
object disapNeared,
or I should sa:r,
I
could no longer see 1 t because the red glow shut
of'f .
I
watched
a l l
the
news
media
for
the
next
week,
and
no
one
mentioned
seeing
the
red bal l .
There was
no air-crash
reported,
but I
\'las
already convinced
t was
not
an airplane.
I t s behavior,
plus
the fact that I heard no
sound with
the windows clown, made me
certain that the
object
was not
a plane
or hel icopter. The sudden
burst r speed without further loss or al t i tude explodes

I
asked tac t tu l

and
found no

I
have never
doubted
the possibi l i t ies r
such
things as UFOs, I have never berore seen
one that I
could
not give a logical
explanation
tor .
Being
a his
torian, I
have
always
been
one to check a l l facts before calling
any story or object
a mystery.
Heretofore, the
UFOs I have seen
were
unindentified
only
for a brief moment. Closer scrutiny has
always
revealed
them
as
l ights
shooting

puff's

smoke,
even
