Good morning! chimed Ms. Presley to her first class of the day.
Morning, Ms. Presley her students mumbled in response.
Today, she began, Were going to cover Plagiarism Prevention. Has
anyone heard the term Plagiarismbefore? Ms. Presley looked
around the room, her eyes wide hoping that just one student would
raise their hand and participate. After an appropriate amount of wait
time, Ms. Presley decided to try to engage her students with another
question.
Does anyone have any idea what this might mean? Laura raised her
hand.
Right! As defined by the New Oxford American
Dictionary, Plagiarismis the practice of taking someone
elses work or ideas and passing them off as ones
own. cheered Ms. Presley, happy that a student
participated.
Today Were Going to Cover Plagiarism Prevention

Write a short argument paper citing at least two sources

Now, class, were done with our first objective: defining plagiarism. But!
In defining plagiarism, I used someone elses words- the dictionarys! Brian, were
you able to tell from my definition that I used someone elses work? How so?
Excellent, Brian! Everyone, Brian knew that I used what is
called an outside source because I told him explicitly that thedefinition was from the New Oxford American Dictionary. From
my understanding, an outside source is anyone elses work
that is not your own. Now, you can use other peoples
work you just have to cite it! The same dictionary defines
a citationas a quotation from or reference to a book,
paper, or author. Citations include all of these sources! And,
they also include electronic sources, pictures, movies, songs,
and anything else that didnt come from your brain.Now that weve defined these terms, lets move on to our
second objective: understanding the ifs, ands, and buts of using
outside sources. To do that, everyone silently read the handout on
your desk. After, we will review what you must do when using other
peoples work.
I knew you used someone
elses words because you told me
that the definition of the word was

Ifs , Ands , & Buts of Using Outside Sources
Ifdirectly quoting, paraphrasing, summarizing, or taking an idea from anoutside source you must cite it!
Ifyou think you should cite it, youre probably right! When in doubt, citeit out.
Andsometimes, your teacher may ask you to cite everything you lookedat during your research. Even if you dont end up using it all, you still must
cite it!
And using outside sources can really strengthen your finished product asthey will show that you spent time researching and gaining a better
understanding of your topic.
But using outside sources too much will show that you do not haveanything original to add to your product. Too much quoting, paraphrasing,
summarizing, etc. will make your paper cluttered.
But to avoid this problem, try sandwiching your quote. First, write astatement that introduces the quote, picture, idea, etc. youre going to use.
Second, implement that quote into your product (make sure the font, size,
and color match up with your work - this is a dead give away for
plagiarism). Last, explain the relevance of this quote. After reading, youraudience shouldnt be left wondering why you used that outside source.

Great, Jeremy! Thats exactly right. To prevent plagiarism, you simply
need to give credit where credit is due, which you do by citing your sources.
Ms. Presley answered.

online resources for citing help! Ms. Presley added, moving to her computer to
bring up the reference list.

Now, Ms. Presley continued after reviewing the citation guide, Lets
practice using and citing sources. Use the rest of the period to write a short
argument paper using and citing at least two sources. You can argue about
any topic you would like, from dogs are better than cats, to the pros and
cons of school uniforms, the possibilities are endless. So, get to it shepunctuated with a clap of her hands.
After a few minutes of independent research and writing, Lizzie
stood from her desk and walked to the back of the classroom, where the
bookshelves were located. She briefly browsed the collection before
carefully taking out three books. While passing Ms. Presleys desk, Lizzie
whispered
As the students in Ms. Presleys class continued to tap away at their
keyboards, or flip through the pages of a book, one student devised a
devious plan. Peter, a smart but generally lazy boy decided that he did not
care about giving credit where credit was due. How would she know?He
thought to himself as he tried to look on to his neighbors paper to copy
her argument. Ill just change a few words here and there to make it look
different. Thatll be just enough effort to cover my tracks he justified to himself.

paper.

Out of the corner of her watchful eye, Ms. Presley saw Peter peeping over
to his peers desk in an attempt to plagiarize. Flashing lights and sirens
started to go off in her head. She tried to stay calm, to prevent the transition
from happening. But, her secret power was boiling inside her, simmering to
the point where she saw
peter, plagiarism perpetratorin large red writing each time she blinked her eyes. Oh no! Its happening
she thought. Not again. Not here. I was just getting settled. She tried to
breathe and relax but the feeling was much too strong. Suddenly, she ran
from her desk and into the hallway, the door closing behind her with a
loud click.
Wheres Ms. Presley going? a few students asked, clearly
concerned. With that, heads began looking towards the hallway and
mouths began uttering her name.
The door creaked open.
Ms. Presley? the students whispered into the air.
Seconds ticked by
Tick.
Tock.
Tick.
Tock.
Tick.
Tock.
Whats happening? one wide-eyed, fearful student worried.
Suddenly, but slowly still, muffled sounds began seeping under their
classroom door from the hallway. They grew louder and louder with each
passing second.

and disbelief that had smacked him in the face.

you? Who are you? he spoke.
Deep down, i am still ms. Presley. But i saw
you peeping down on your peers paper and myinternal plagiarism perpetrator alarm sounded.

my plagiarism perpetrator alarm. i am a plagiarism preventer,peter. it is my duty as such to prevent you from using an outsidesource without citing it.
Uhhh But I was just going to change some words around. Isnt that
good enough? Am I in trouble? he asked.
you are not in trouble, no. but changing a few words aroundjust doesnt cut it. citing your sources, well thats how aprofessional does it. wouldnt you want credit if someone used
your work? Cite your sources so no one thinks youre a jerk.class, i aim to help you. Lets all work together so we givecredit where its due.

What does this all mean? another student chimed.
Review todays lesson, thats a good start. Read up on theprovided links to learn how to cite sources. When citing in yourpaper, its usually as easy as writing the authors last name and
the page from which your quote originates.
That doesnt seem too bad, I think I can manage it. What if I have any
questions?
Citing is easy once you get the hang of it! you can familiarizeyourself with the formats of citing sources and ask me oranother plagiarism preventer for help with what to do.
Woah! Cool! Thanks for all your citing sources help, Ms. Presle- I mean,
