Certification is NOT mandatory in Michigan, but it is very important to be certified for employment. Please Note: Certification CAN become mandatory at any time without notice!
Two national certification exams:• ExCPT exam—offered by the National Healthcareer Association

• PTCB exam—offered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board www.ptcb.org• $129—renewal every 2 years
• Renewal consists of doing Continuing Education Credits or CE’s• Each certification requires 20 CE’s every 2 years
CERTIFICATION
There is no license or registration that is issued by the State of Michigan to pharmacy technicians because it is not a regulated profession. To obtain certification as a pharmacy technician, individuals must contact the national Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) at www.ptcb.org or (800) 363-8012.
The Michigan Pharmacists Association (MPA) does not certify pharmacy technicians but can serve as a resource for educational/certification study materials for individuals who are interested in a career as a pharmacy technician. The MPA can be contacted at www.michiganpharmacists.org or (517) 484-1466.

LEVELS OF A PHARMACY TECHNICIAN
Pharmacy Technician Level 1:An individual with no pharmacy experience, education, training, certification; works at the cash register or in stock room
Pharmacy Technician Levels 2 & 3:An individual with education or training in pharmacy technician education, certified; works in dispensing medications, patient processing
Pharmacy Technician Manager/Supervisor:An individual with at least 5 years of pharmacy experience; is educated and trained for entry and advanced level processes, certified, proficiency in many skills.
