Alumina Trihydrate (ATH) and Magnesium Hydroxide (MDH) Aluminatrihydrate(ATH)andmagnesiumhydroxide(MDH)arewidelyusedtomakelow-smokeand/orhalogen-freeflameretardantwireandcablecompoundsforarangeofinsulationandjacketingapplications.ATHandMDHservetoretardbothflameandsmokeviaanendothermicreactionthatreleaseswaterwhenheatedtodecomposition.Themetaloxideby-productfromdecomposedATHandMDH,Al2O3andMgOrespectively,alsohelpsformacharonthepolymer,whichinsulatesthepolymerfromheatandoxygen.
ThechartbelowcomparesthedecompositioncharacteristicsofATHandMDH.ATHdecomposesatabout220˚CwhileMDHdecomposesatabout330˚C,thus,havingahigherthermalstabilityallowingforawiderwindowforcompoundingprocessing.

ATHissuitabletouseinPVC-andpolyolefin-basedwireandcablecompoundswherecompoundingprocessingtemperaturesaretypicallybelow220˚C.MDHispreferredforformulatingcompounds thatneedtobeprocessedattemperaturesnearorabovetheATH decompositiontemperature,suchaspolypropyleneandengineeringthermoplastics.UseofMDHalsoenablesprocessingofPVCorpoly-olefincompoundsathighertemperaturesnotpermissibleforATH,thus,enhancingthecompoundingefficiencyorextrusionthroughput.
