Thecommittee retired, and after a recess,presented a scries of resolutions, whichwere adopted by a rising vote. Theyset forth tho sorrow of the CouncilIn the death of Mr. Davis, and recorda high estimate, of him as a man andcitizen, and of tho conspicuous fidelitywith which he discharged his dutiesto the municipality. AS a. further markof esteem the Council decided to at¬tend the funeral in a body, and invitedthe members of the Bqard of Alder¬men and officials of the city govern¬ment to unite in paying this tribute. Itwas also ordered that Mr. DavlB's deskIn the Council chamber be drapodfor a period of thirty days.
In presenting the resolutions, Chair¬man Pollock spoke briefly of Mr.Davis's services in the Council, ex¬pressing the appreciation of those whohave labored with him on committees,who would greatly feel his loss.A meeting of the Committee on Re¬
lief of the Poor, scheduled for yes¬terday afternoon at the City Home,was postponed until Wednesday af¬ternoon, and a meeting of the Com¬mittee on Improvement of the JamesRiver, scheduled for to-night, has boenpostponed by order of Chairman Rog¬ers until Friday afternoon, at 4 o'clock,when It will be held on board Ihe citytug.

HRussell, of the State Normal Schoolet Fredericksburg, together with astrong representation from the CountyBoard of Public School Trustees, allappeared before the Board of Super¬visors of the county and asked for anIncrease of the general public schoollevy, with a view to putting the systemupon a better and safer basis and the.employment of better fitted and quali¬fied teachers.
The board recognized the Importanceof the Increase and raised the levyfrom 20 cents to S5 cents on the $100worth of taxable property in the county.
