Skillet Rise

Kikoski, Carpenter, Novak, Sheppard From the Hip
On May 21, 2006, Rising Jazz Stars Foundation president George Klabin gathered fourpremier musicians to put on a jazz-standards performance in his private Beverly Hills studio. The jazz maestros continue their decorated thirty-two-year career with a new album, theirsecond on Mack Avenue Records. The Grammy-winning band now features bassist Felix Pastorius, son of the late bass legend with Weather Report, Jaco Pastorius. Drummer Will Kennedy, who’s onboard for the second Yellowjackets album since returning to the group after an eleven-year hiatus, says, “As opposed to a detriment, [Pastorius replacing long-time bassist Jimmy Haslip] was more ofan opportunity for us to grow and expand with a different combination of voices within our group.”
Moon Hooch Moon Hooch
Moon Hooch has re-released its debut album—previously only available at the group’slive shows—with new artwork and an additional song called “Megatubes,” the only track on thealbum that includes vocals. The trio, which consists of saxophonists Mike Wilbur and WenzlMcGowen and drummer James Muschler, uses live instruments to create jagged and raw dancemusic, calling their approach “cave music.” Busking performances on subway platforms, amongother unusual “venues,” have brought them some notoriety, though the band just wrapped up a moreconventional tour supporting They Might Be Giants.
